It seems to me that all the newsgroups I visited recently, since the
wide-spread popularization of OE as the standard for newsreading at least in
my little realm anyways (I know personally about 15 people who use
newsgroups still and all use OE) that top posting was better. In fact, I
think it has come up recently here wher people sort of flamed
bottom-posters. However, recently on a newsgroup I don't regular, that I
guess has a different 'attitude' towards things, I was flamed to no end for
suggesting in a reply that more people top post these days because of OE
when an article was posted saying that everyone should bottom post.

What is you guys opinion?

I used to use OE only, but it got annoying to try and use sigs because it
always put them above the quoted text. This one I'm using is fine
(although it's in Linux) so I'll stick with it and continue to bottom
post. Force of habit.

Flaming bottom posters though? I haven't seen any, plus it flies in the
face of "netiquette" in that it's far easier (IMO) to read a reply that
follows on from what the quoted text that the poster is replying to.

According to usenet etitequite (sp?) the quote should be at the top, and
the reply below. The quote should be snipped to only have appropiate
contents to the response.

This way people could know what everybody was replying to. Everything
in these days were Unix, and so each message was opened up and scrolled
down.

Then came along the GUI - companies such as Netscape created news
clients which supported threaded views. Threaded views meant that you
could easily switch between messages, and all the messages relating to
each other would be stored together. This turned around how posting
should be done.

Your post should be at the top, with the relavent quote snipped at the
bottom. If people need to read back they can either glace down, or
merely look up the thread. You will also notice in the headers for
every post is a set of refrences - which are the ID's for each post. So
if you are missing a post, you can look up the reference on another server.

Some people refuse to change and will still bottom post. I have no
quibble - if people make a lot of fuss about where I post then I will
post there. Unless I'm a regular poster, then I will top post because
it saves a lot of time.

After taking a moment to trim the original quote, it's as easy to top
post as bottom, and readers don't have to scroll down through pages of
old already-read material to reach the new stuff. I'm pretty lazy and
often won't bother.

The only possible reason for bottom posting seems to be that the
reader needs constant reminding what the thread is about before they
read the new material. I suspect they may simply not know how to show
already-read messages in their newsreader. Regardless, I think it's a
mistake for the rest of us to go quite that far just to accommodate a
few weak-minded people no matter how noisy they are.

My news reader automatically puts me at the bottom of the quote.. I
think most older-bred newsreaders do. I think Outlook Express is one of
the few that defaults to this top-posting thing..

Bottom posting also keeps your post along with your sig, whereas top
posting requires you to scroll down if you wanted to see the poster's
sig. (Provided it's a long post and/or long quote)

I'm old-school. I take pride in trimming the quote to the bare
minimum. The note about modern GUI threaded readers is fair,
although I have always had threaded readers, all the way back
to my first post in 92. Still it seems easier to follow the
threads with a GUI reader.

So these days, what is bottom posting good for?

. The trimmed context is more "concentrated", more related
to what the poster is talking about.
. You have better odds of finding a relevant post in DejaGoogle,
as a well trimmed comment more closely relates to the reply,
instead of including a bunch of extra dross.
. Shows the name of whom I'm responding to without having
to scroll down (and down and down sometimes).
. Allows me to respond on a point by point basis, by splitting
up the comment into the relevant sections and replying
"in-line", very handy.
. Keeps my elite sig in your face.

I have no problem with top posting. I understand, I'm forced to
use Outlook at work. And top posting is easier.

Personally I just like the aesthetics and style of a properly
trimmed bottom posted message.

Note: If you bottom post, you'd *better* trim it!
