At the "official" SMAC site at www.firaxis.com/smac, Cybernetic
Consciousness is called "Cyborg Consciousness", her leader is reported
to have been a norwegian called Aki Luttinen who was a part of Zak's
techie group. However, Aki Luttinen is a Finnish name, like someone
pointed out in a mail forwarded to Apolyton news; this same mail said
that the name was soon changed in the web site. That news piece was
almost two years old, so how come it's still Aki Luttinen in firaxis
site? The same page also has pretty different stats to Consciousness.

OK, I know their storyline has some problems with consistency, but I'm
trying to piece together a fairly consistent "history" of what is
available.

Yes, this came up in the GURPS Alpha Centauri playtest too. I
don't know how Firaxis wants to resolve it (I rather suspect they
aren't going to spend much time on it) but I think I'm going with
the theory that she's from a Finnish immigrant family.

That leaves us with the problem that "Aki" is apparently a *male*
name in Finnish -- a particular difficulty since (as I'm told) Finnish
doesn't apply names cross-gender the way English sometimes
does. Maybe her name was actually "Anikki" or something similar,
and it got mangled in her memory when she merged with that
AI. . .

Um, maybe her parents were finns that moved to Norway? Hardly
outside of the realm of possibility.

IIUC, the bigger problem is that Aki is an unambiguously male
name. Again, it's not so wierd that it can't be explained, but
is a little strange.

Strange to anyone familiar with the culture. To others, it's greeted with a
shrug of the shoulders.

Just as Linus Torvalds is a Swede from Finland who lives in the USA now.
