OK, I know their storyline has some problems with consistency, but I'm
trying to piece together a fairly consistent "history" of what is

Yes, this came up in the GURPS Alpha Centauri playtest too. I
don't know how Firaxis wants to resolve it (I rather suspect they
aren't going to spend much time on it) but I think I'm going with
the theory that she's from a Finnish immigrant family.
That leaves us with the problem that "Aki" is apparently a *male*
name in Finnish -- a particular difficulty since (as I'm told) Finnish
doesn't apply names cross-gender the way English sometimes
does. Maybe her name was actually "Anikki" or something similar,
and it got mangled in her memory when she merged with that
AI. . .

Um, maybe her parents were finns that moved to Norway? Hardly
outside of the realm of possibility.
IIUC, the bigger problem is that Aki is an unambiguously male
name. Again, it's not so wierd that it can't be explained, but
is a little strange.

Strange to anyone familiar with the culture. To others, it's greeted with a
shrug of the shoulders.
