The original Sid Meier's Civilization II was written by the same
people who (more recently) wrote Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

We left Microprose to start Firaxis shortly after the release of Civ2.
Some of the later editions of Civ2 (such as the multiplayer gold
edition) may not include Sid's name on the packaging for legal
reasons. But it's the same game w/ multiplayer & scenarios added, so
yes, definitely give it a try.

As a side note, a recent product called "Civilization: Call to Power"
is an Activision product, and is not related to Sid Meier or any of
the original team.

Have fun!
