I am playing an advanced game that still locks up in the middle of a turn.
I've tried modifying orders, the order in which I move my units, re-saving
the game after I loaded the new version. Nothing seems to work. I can't
tell you have frustrating it is to try to make a move just to get stopped by
a lockup in the game!!!!

Anyone have a clue on what I can do to avoid this?

My first guess us maybe you really should check your system
configuration somehow. Maybe I am just lucky. But I made about 50 games
since the release of SMAC (now with v3.0 - I am a lucky European who has
a US version) and I never had a single hang up! Not while moving or
killing air units ( in the last game with Yang and destroyed about 300
helicopter while attacking him in his cities (transcendence level - iron
man). And I savely could finish the whole game to reach a score of
something about 1000%. No problem. Have you tried to have a fixed memory
size on your hard disk for WIN9X. Set maximum size to 500MB and minimum
size to 500MB. If you have more than 64 MB of RAM set file system to
"Network Server". Just try and try other settings. (:-

Try start a new game after installing ver. 3.0. Your old save game might
already been corrupted.

I've had similar probs around 2390 when most factions start getting
missiles.
It is now gone with 3.0 but I use to Ctrl-Alt-Del then close down programs
to free up resources until AC started moving again. Not ideal but gets you
over that turn.

I can play a new game w/o a problem. As far as my system configuration is
concerned here it is:

PII 450
128 megs of ram
Running desktop resolution at 1280x1024 w/ true color 32-bit

Will try to adjust VM size and modify system role to network server.

Well tried and still have problems. If you interested I can send anyone the
savegame and you can try it.

Are you sure the game was locked up? I once thought it had locked up because
the active unit wouldn't blink, but when I tried to move it it would still
move.

Positive. I can't scroll or end the turn. It is locked. In fact, I can
bring up the start bar and when I switch back to the game it turns the
screen black where the start bar was.

Everybody seems to have a different answer...but when I had a saved game lock
up on me repeatedly, I finally just avoided making the single unit move that I
was trying to make. The turn finished, and on the next turn I was able to
complete the attack.

Hi Biggus Diccus (or Sillyasoarus?),

I think its just an age old deal with patches, they usually make NO promises
with old saved games. I think Brian and the gang TRIED to make things as
compatible as possible but if the corruption/problem is already stored or
created in the save game, the new EXE may not be able to make a difference.

What resolution do you play the game in? I think it actually may have been
more stable in 800x600, also going into the ALPHA CENTAURI.INI and adding
the line:

Directdraw=0

No guarantees but either of these aspects MIGHT help.

Good Luck,
Tim "Lord Gek" Jordan

Well it seems that if you end the turn w/o making a move that you can
continue. Until the next move. Not much point if all you can do is skip
turns. It seems that it only freezes up when the AI is moving my formers
and/or moving to a destination. For example. I set a waypoint for a
cruiser to move, and I get to the point where I want a unit to hold
position, it will lock up at that point. I think what I will try is NOT
automating any of the formers and see what happens.

If you have a game you started in version 2.0 (or earlier) which ran
into the "enemy missile" hang, your save file is corrupted, and must
be repaired in order to continue (even with 3.0). To repair it, start
up the game (using 3.0), load your save, then:

(a) Turn on scenario editor (ctrl-k)
(b) Press an ampersand ("&" or Shift-7)
(c) Click OK through various messages which follow
(d) Turn off scenario editor (ctrl-k)
(e) Save your game
(f) continue playing

3.0 fixed my lockup. I went in and loaded my game saved at 2391 that would
lock up during 2393, but after 3.0 installed, it just kept on playing.

Brian,

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I tried your workaround to no avail.
I activated the scenario editor and said okay about it permanently marking
it on my final score. After that it showed the elapse time of my progress.
After that I just click okay to clear the graphics and that's it. No other
messages were displayed. It gets to where you get some editing tools and an
extra button labeled 'T' in between 'M' and 'I'. I close the editor and
saved the game. Continuing, I give my formers their orders, but when game
"terraform complete" it hangs. The music continues for a few seconds and
then everything stops responding. I can, however, skip the turn and
continue only to get stopped again on the next turn. Only when the computer
takes over is there a problem.

If you'd like I can send over the save game.

Regards,

Michael

P.S. I'm pretty impressed to see the lead game designer take interest in
the progress and problems of your fellow SMAC'ers.

In your description of what you did, you didn't mention actually
pressing ampersand (&). If you did that and still no joy, go ahead and
send your save file.

I tested his save game and it doesn't work for me either. I never had
any hang ups though. The ampersand didn't work either. It gave my a
dialog to create terrain enhancements instead, neither SHIFT-7 nor the
german keyboard configuration of SHIFT-6 does work.
