Anyone have a clue on what I can do to avoid this?

My first guess us maybe you really should check your system
configuration somehow. Maybe I am just lucky. But I made about 50 games
since the release of SMAC (now with v3.0 - I am a lucky European who has
a US version) and I never had a single hang up! Not while moving or
killing air units ( in the last game with Yang and destroyed about 300
helicopter while attacking him in his cities (transcendence level - iron
man). And I savely could finish the whole game to reach a score of
something about 1000%. No problem. Have you tried to have a fixed memory
size on your hard disk for WIN9X. Set maximum size to 500MB and minimum
size to 500MB. If you have more than 64 MB of RAM set file system to
"Network Server". Just try and try other settings. (:-

Will try to adjust VM size and modify system role to network server.

Everybody seems to have a different answer...but when I had a saved game lock
up on me repeatedly, I finally just avoided making the single unit move that I
was trying to make. The turn finished, and on the next turn I was able to
complete the attack.

I think its just an age old deal with patches, they usually make NO promises
with old saved games. I think Brian and the gang TRIED to make things as
compatible as possible but if the corruption/problem is already stored or
created in the save game, the new EXE may not be able to make a difference.
What resolution do you play the game in? I think it actually may have been
more stable in 800x600, also going into the ALPHA CENTAURI.INI and adding
the line:
Directdraw=0
No guarantees but either of these aspects MIGHT help.
Good Luck,

Send it over to me. I will see if it hang for me.
Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I tried your workaround to no avail.
I activated the scenario editor and said okay about it permanently marking
it on my final score. After that it showed the elapse time of my progress.
After that I just click okay to clear the graphics and that's it. No other
messages were displayed. It gets to where you get some editing tools and an
extra button labeled 'T' in between 'M' and 'I'. I close the editor and
saved the game. Continuing, I give my formers their orders, but when game
"terraform complete" it hangs. The music continues for a few seconds and
then everything stops responding. I can, however, skip the turn and
continue only to get stopped again on the next turn. Only when the computer
takes over is there a problem.
If you'd like I can send over the save game.
Regards,
Michael
P.S. I'm pretty impressed to see the lead game designer take interest in
the progress and problems of your fellow SMAC'ers.
