How would you rank the fourteen characters from FF3 from best
to worst?
(and I don't mean counting characters like Vicks, Wedge, Banon,
Ghost, Leo, Kefka, Cid, Siegfried, Ultros, Chupon, Chrono, Cecil,
Platinum-Aluminum Dragon, etc. etc. etc.)
Here's my rankings, IMHO, of course:
1) Gogo (who else?!)
2) Sabin
3) Edgar
4) Terra
5) Cyan
6) Setzer
7) Locke
8) Shadow
9) Mog
10) Celes
11) Strago
12) Relm
13) Gau
14) Umaro

I think it all depends on how you power the characters up. For example,
if you equip Relm with a esper that gives her +2 magic power on each level
up, she can be one of the strongest characters in the game (instead of
number 12 on your list). In this way, you can customize each players
ablities to their strong points and make them the best they can be.
Assuming you're not using Espers (if you are, any character
except Umaro can become the 'best' one):
1) Locke
2) Celes
3) Gogo
4) Setzer
5) Sabin
6) Cyan
7) Edgar
8) Terra
9) Shadow
10) Gau
11) Relm
12) Mog
13) Strago
14) Umaro

How are you judging these characters? By their worth in battle or their
personalities and personal traits?

As for the rankings, I can't determine them straight, but here is how I
would rank them, near the end, with all the items:
1: Gau (w/runningshoes) (My favorite rage is Rhinox. :)
2: Umaro (w/Rage Ring and Gauntlet) (Almost no magic can hurt him!)
3: Cyan (w/Dragoon Boots and Dragon Horn)
4: Sabin (w/Offering and Genji Glove)
5: Shadow (using Tack Stars... *more on that later*)
6: Terra (w/Gem Box and Economizer/Golden Hairpin)
7: Celes (w/Czarina Cape and runningshoes)
8: Mog (Best if using the Wind Song... whatever it's called... for
healing)
9: Relm (w/Memento and Fake moustache)
10: Strago (w/Gem Box and Economizer/Gold hairpin)
11: Edgar (w/Chainsaw)
12: Setzer (w/o Coin Toss... Costs too much for too little)
13: Locke (w/sneak Ring and Thief Glove)
*Tack Stars* In (Strago and Relm's starting place... the name escapes
me), You will find Shurikens in the inventory. Bet the shurikens in the
Coliseum, and you will win the Ninja Star. Bet the Ninja Star, and you
will receive the Tack Star.

Usefulness in battle, if everyone had equal hit points, equal magic
points, equal statistics (Strength, Stamina, Speed, and Magpwr), all
the spells, all their special skills (Sabin had all Blitzes, Gau had
all rages, etc.), and were equipped with their best weapons & armor,
but no relics.
So basically, I'm ranking my characters by the usefulness of their
skills during battle. Very little more.
I realize that there's more to the characters than their skills,
but if all other things are equal, isn't it the skills that separates
one character from another in battle?

It should be noted that some players like characters for what they can do.
I never really used Umaro but just the other day I saw why friend of mine
liked him and had him really powered up. He liked Umaro's throw, when he
fights he occasionally picks up a character and throws the character at the
monster. I personally like Sabin's blitzs, Cyan's sword tech, and anyone
with high magic ability like Terra.
