How to use a ring in FF7?

Can someone tell me how you can equip a ring in Final Fantasy 7?

In particular, I want to equip the water ring to fight Jenova Life.
Which menu am I suppose to use the water ring from? I don't see it
from the Equip and Materia menus, and it is grayed out in the Item
menu.

So how or when can you equip or use it? I can't find an answer looking
at the FAQ or this newsgroup. There must be something simple I'm
missing.

Did you try equipping the ring before going into the fight? And making
sure that your character didn't have any other accessories equipped
(ribbon, etc)? The ring can't actually be used as a weapon, IIRC - it
just protects you from Jenova Life's attacks. It should be under the
equip menu, if you try to equip it as an accessory.

Sorry folks, just as soon as I posted the question that I figured it
out. I just never noticed the accessory entry on the equip menu.
Amazing that I went through most of the first disk not knowing this...

I don't think you have to equip it. I think it is automatic. If you see a
timer when you fight the emerald weapon then it is not working.

Yikes!!! Of course you can equip a ring--it's an accessory. The timer goes
away when you equip Underwater materia. Water Ring only absorbs water
damage, which is mostly only useful against Jenova-LIFE.
