Grandia:Sue's Crayons?(End of Disk 1/Early Disk 2 spoilers)

Okay, Sue and Gadwin have both left my party, and they left
the things you can use to increase your weapon/magic levels, the
Bow,Mace and Sword books, Sue's crayons, and Gadwin's two books.
Anyway, my question is, what determines how much expierience you gain
from the books? The reason I'm asking is because I've noticed
something odd. I had given Justin earth magic (so he could use that
weapon tech Gadwin taught him) and Rapp water magic, and I wanted to
use the books/crayons on them to speed up the learning. Anyway, I
tried to use the earth book on Justin...only to find that he'd only
gain one level. HOWEVER, Feena, who had an Earth magic level of 15
would've gained 2 levels had I used the book on her. What's going
on,here? The descriptions are kind of vague, as well...

Feena
You gain 1/3 of the levels the character gained while he/she was in your
party. Meaning if your character gained 4.5 levels, you'll get 1.5 level
with his/her item. Meaning if Feena was level, say, 0.5 with that skill,
she'll go up to level 3, thus gaining 2 levels.
Keep in mind, though, that you get bonuses only from the exp gained
while the character was with you. If he started at level 10 with a
sword, if he didn't gain any level with you, you don't get anything,
doh.
