yep, thats right!
and, no, im not talking about the town called Tifa - there's something a
lot less direct.
in the weapons shop in Lindbulm - Zidane, when examining a case of swords
mounted on the wall says "I remember seeing a spikey haired fellow who
carried these" a reference to the massive swords cloud used in FF7?
coincidence? i think not!!

You can also hear the Junan March music while inside Evil Forest. One of
the main characters is named Garland from the original Final Fantasy as
well.

Bzzzz. Sorry man. That is actually the Iifa (iifa) tree. However, on
the opening FMV, the map there DOES say Tifa and not Iifa. Easter egg. Go
fig. ;)

Actually, I'd say it is very direct....

Yup yup yup. Either him or Zach (Or is it spelled Zack? I havent played FF7
in awhile). I love Easter eggs, dont you?

That's not an easter egg, it's a direct reference, just like the 4076 other
references in the game.

Yes, Aries (a zodiac sign), not Aeris. It's part of a side quest where
you collect coins or something.

Yeah, it could still be a Final Fantasy reference. Zodiac Stones from FFT.

And the four fiends (Lich, Kraken, Tiamat, and Kary/Marilis from
FF1)... and the Gurgu/Gulug Volcano (complete with a remix of the FF1
music)... and the Namingway card (FF4)... the Airship Invincible
(FF3j)... Pandemonium (FF2j)... and the numerous rare items at the
Treno Auction House, including Rat Tails (FF1 and 4), Une's Mirror and
Doga's Artifact (FF3j). Potentially even the Gold Chocobo counts as a
ref to FF7. Methinks the crew went a tad overboard on the
nostalg-o-meter this time through....

I'm glad someone started this thread... today, upon seeing the ending for
the second time, i found
the another ff7&8 reference...

spoiler:

during the play at the ending, one of cornelia's line goes something
like:
"not even *cloud* and *squall* can stop us..." or something like that...
ha!
