WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. health officials on Thursday approved a pill
that causes an abortion early in
pregnancy, clearing the way for its sale after 12 years of political
battles and delays that kept it off the U.S. market.

The pill, known as RU-486 or mifepristone, can induce an abortion early
in pregnancy without surgery. The drug
debuted in France in 1988, but abortion opponents fought its entry into
the United States.

The drug will be sold under the brand name Mifeprex by Danco
Laboratories, a private firm set up to distribute and
market the product. Fears of anti-abortion violence and boycotts kept big
drug makers from pursuing the pill. The
current manufacturer has been kept secret.

Mifepristone should be available in about one month, according to the
Population Council, the New York-based
nonprofit group that owns U.S. rights to the pill.

"American women now will have access to this non-surgical method as do
women in France, the United Kingdom,
Sweden and other countries in Europe," Population Council spokeswoman
Sandra Waldman said.

Abortion rights groups applauded the approval, calling it "the beginning
of a new era." Opponents said they would
work to discourage use of the drug.

Mifepristone causes an abortion by blocking a hormone needed to sustain
pregnancy. Under the regimen approved by
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, mifepristone would be followed two
days later by misoprostol, a drug that
causes uterine contractions.

Women need to return for an exam two weeks later to find out whether the
pregnancy has been terminated. The drug
combination works in about 95 percent of cases. Most patients will have
some side effects such as cramping or
bleeding.

PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES REACT

The approval drew reactions on the presidential campaign trail. Texas
Gov. George W. Bush, the Republican
nominee, said the decision was "wrong."

"I fear that making this abortion pill widespread will make abortions
more and more common, rather than more and
more rare. As president, I will work to build a culture that respects
life," Bush said in a statement.

Bush's Democratic rival, Vice President Al Gore, said he was pleased with
the action.

"Today's decision is not about politics but the health and safety of
American women and a woman's fundamental right
to choose," Gore said in a statement.

The FDA approved the pill for use during the first 49 days after a
woman's last menstrual period. Women who receive
the drug will be given a pamphlet that explains how to use it and
cautions about possible side effects such as severe
bleeding.

The clearance came after a careful review of clinical trials from the
United States and France as well as scrutiny of
manufacturing processes, FDA Commissioner Jane Henney said in an
interview.

"The decision was not difficult to make when you look at the science,"
Henney said.

Abortion rights groups cheered the news. The final approval was a "total
victory for U.S. women. At long last, science
trumps anti-abortion politics," said Eleanor Smeal, president of the
Feminist Majority Foundation.

Gloria Feldt, president of Planned Parenthood, said mifepristone's U.S.
arrival was the "beginning of a new era" in
which women and doctors might have more privacy from protesters, and
access to abortion may widen.

Abortion opponents denounced the decision.

"The Clinton-Gore administration, which claimed it wanted to make
abortion rare, has embraced an abortion pill that
will result in more abortions and new risks to women," said Laura
Echevarria, a spokeswoman for the National Right
to Life Committee.

Passion against abortion is so high that clinics have been bombed, and
doctors and clinic workers have been harassed
and killed. Concerned about possible retaliation, the FDA was keeping the
names of the scientists who reviewed the
drug secret, Henney said.

PEACEFUL PROTESTS PLANNED

Groups that oppose abortion said they planned peaceful means to try to
discourage the pill's use, including highlighting
possible side effects such as nausea, vomiting and bleeding. About 1
percent of patients in clinical trials had bleeding
so severe that they needed surgery, the FDA said.

The FDA imposed some restrictions on the pill, but not as many as
abortion rights groups feared. Under the FDA
rules, doctors who prescribe mifepristone must be able to determine how
long a woman has been pregnant and
whether she may have a tubal pregnancy.

Also, prescribers must have plans for how to provide surgical procedures
in cases of severe bleeding or an incomplete
abortion.

Rep. Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican, said he would introduce
legislation to impose more controls to protect
women's health, including a requirement that the FDA certify prescribers
through a training program.

The final approval comes after years of obstacles.

Former President George Bush banned RU-486 from the country in 1989.
President Clinton lifted the ban in 1993,
and French maker Roussel-Uclaf donated U.S. rights in 1994 to the
Population Council, which funded clinical trials of
the drug.

The group officially applied for approval in 1996, and the FDA deemed
mifepristone safe and effective later that year.
But the group still had to work out manufacturing and distribution issues
before mifepristone could hit the market.

Like the zealots who attack doctors that perform abortions? The zealots
for whom you have such little respect?

I'm having a hard time comprehending how you can justify killing anyone
when you so vehemently defend the right to life of an embryo. But I'm
slow.

Why would pro-lifers, the ones complaining about the murder of one 'person',
kill two at each shot? (If mommy dies, baby dies.), but I guess they don't have
to be logical, so..

While I try to aviod abortion threads on usenet, I'll make this one post.

I am Christian and Pro Life, however, I DO NOT agree with the idea of
other 'pro life' people KILLING pro-abortion people (wether by bombing a
clinic or Atma's little idea).

Killing a person(pro abortion or not) is no lesser evil then killing an
unborn child.

And we also have a pro-choicer that supports Bush. In AGFF, the

Exactly. It's not as if a specific person is being targeted. In
theory, if these women decided not to kill the unborn, then there
wouldn't be any problem, even if the entire supply of the
abortion-pill was tainted with toxic poisons. If one of them decides
they want to kill their child, then they DIE. I think it's an awesome
idea. Rid the planet of the worthless slime and leave the respectable
people here.

Huh? Where?

'scuse me, but that's pretty much the way you sounded throughout the discussion.

> and have the final say, and then dodge any arguments made against me

I'd say PKB, but if I hope to get a reply more meaningful than STFU, I should probably elaborate.

Firstly, I should probably restate my own standpoints

1} A female egg, fertilized or not, is not alive. It has no life or soul to speak of. When it does
become alive I don't know and it's been debated for a very long time by people a lot more competent
by either me or you. Where I do stand certain on is that it's can't be considered alive at least
until specific organs start to form.

2} Abortion is not murder. Why? See #1

Now, about "dodging the arguments" and such....

I say what I know, and what I can deduce from logical reasoning. You, on the other hand, for most of
the time either employ some kind of weird logic produced directly from what you stand on, or go into
God mode, make a satement and consider it proof. Or, if by any chance, the argument you present *is*
valid, you respond to anything that might comromise it as either BS, or by one of the aforementioned
methods. Or just spew a bunch of insults, but I see little effect in that except the sole fact that
you have dignified the poster with a response.

The two points I stated at the beginning are what I believe. I'm not asking or expecting you to
accept them; I simply hope you will realize that that *is* my opinion, as well as of many other
people, and there is extremely little you can do to change it. Or, if you insist on "discussing" as
you have so far, absolutly nothing. I understand your opinion. I consider it flawed, but it is yours
and I repect your right to it. However, you should understand that if you insist on calling people
"murderers", they are likely to repond, and usually a lot less polite than what I am doing now. I
think the general level of that anti-pro-choice is proof enough of that.

The "embryos are parasites" twist, for example. Or {quote}

Animeg: >I've never been preganent(never had sex, either) The woman still has most of

You, in direct response:

From this, I'm.... marginally.... guessing you wanted to say that people who are in a true relationship
with one another have less of getting pregnant {well, the woman, anyhow} Either that, or that it's
immoral to have sex, no matter even if it's your boyfriend/girlfriend.

Well, I was trying to offer we start discussing like normal people instead like a bunch of
three-year-olds, but I guess the idea just got fucked.

So you're going to kill people for WHAT reason? I don't really believe in
'revenge'. That kind of thing screws everything up, because instead of trying
to fix the crime, you are so busy trying to kill folk, who will leave people
who want to kill folk.. anyway, as someone else said: an eye for an eye leaves
everyone blind.

What's so logical about complaining about what you call murder, and then saying
that murdering is ok?

Your arguments consist of ignoring the rights of 51% of the population, saying
that some cells are more important than the woman, saying that people's lives
should be trashed because the condom broke. I actually gave some facts about
adoption. You gave assertions.

But in doing so they would also kill the fetuses those "murderers" bear. Do you think they'll be
happy to know they're dying for someone's sense of poetic justice?

Right..... you're against premarital sex. Well, I hate to tell you this, but these aren't even nineties
anymore, and the whole idea of "hands away until marriage" got {publicly} scragged around the sixties. In
this age of freedom {for better or worse, but the genie is out of the bottle now...} something as....
pleasant... as sex is very likely to be taken advantage of. Second, there are a lot of men who will go "of
course I love you, honey..." and when the news break, the tune will change to "Oh. Well, it's been fun babe,
take care of yourself." There are extremely rare cases when you can be certain how a person will react until
they find themselves in the real situation.

So instead it would be killed by those claiming to fight for their rights. Now isn't that noble?

Oh, and one more thing.... why don't you practice what you preach, instead of cowering behind that

Okay, last post before I go out again. Lemme draw you a picture.......You
Have G-E-D O-T-H-E-R-W-I-S-E K-N-O-W-N A-S a 'po white trash degree. You
cannot get into med. school with that degree, they won't even look at your
application. Animeg was right. And WTF is your comeback? "And this proves
what, moron?" Is the moron supposed to bother me? Like I give a fuck what
you think. Your arguments are bias and idiotic. You think GW is stupid? At
least he doesn't have a friggin' GED. You make a comment about Bush saying
something after a person was put to death, AND YET you say a woman getting
killed outside an abortion clinic is "poetic justice". That looks like a
*GASP* PKB! Of course because you are a genius you can't go under the
standards of the peon.......

Let's review your arguments:

Voting: You won't vote for GWB because he is "stupid"
Abortion: The mother should be killed because some sick bastard behind a
keyboard thinks so.

Whatever......

You say you'd condone the actions of people who would go as far as to kill for their beliefs. So why
don't you go off somewhere shooting abortion doctors or something? With any luck you'll forget which
part is the trigger and get shot down by a policeman somewhere.

I believe murder, in any cause, for any reason, in the name of any kind of principle or religion, is
wrong. Consider it squeamishness if you will, but if you can calmly end someone's life to make a
statement, it only proves that it's something that can't be proven by any other means.

You didn't. But since only marriage gives some kind of certainty that should the woman give birth, the father
will stand by her, willing or not. Fiancee or boyfriend are free to run if the shit hits the fan.

Puh-leeze, you just jumped on two completely opposite extremes. Sex is free, generally available and usually
beneficial for both parties {with the notable exception of veneric diseases}. Killing is counter-productive, you
effectively wipe out one sentient being wihout any chance that they'll live again, and probably no positive
effects either.

There are a lot of cases when they do have a serious relationship, but when the trouble comes, no matter what
either of them thought or expected, one just doesn't survive the stress test. We don't always react as nobly as

So you think that killing folks for killing some cells is ok? Better round up

Cancer kills people; having a baby does not. (Except in a few really screwed up
cases, but that's why it's just a few and really screwed up.) Beyond that,
cancerous cells will eventually take a life, whereas a baby is a new life.

How can you compare the two so heartlessly?

*looks at people's lives being screwed up by unwanted kids* Easily. It's easy
to be all like "Awwww' when you won't have to do the bulk of the suffering..
Also, as a teen, my rights get taken away when some stupid suburban housewife
has kids and doesn't know how to raise them, and so raises a stink to the
gov't.

I was actually trying to say that the guy shouldn't be shot for leaving at that
point. I wasn't saying that he'd be wrong to divorce her at that point.

There is a reason that 'E' stands for 'equivalent'. It means that, for whatever
reason, you didn't graduate with your class.

My mom has a GED. She's now a registered nurse. You're ignorant if you think
that a GED = stupidity.

Whatever, here I'll show you:

"Required Coursework
Each medical school has a list of required courses
that you need
to have completed by the time you begin medical
school. Most
medical schools require one year of Biology with
lab, one year of
General Chemistry with lab, one year of Organic
Chemistry with
lab, one year of Physics with lab, and one year of
English. Some
schools require a Mathematics or Biochemistry
course or
courses as well. The required courses go over the
material that
you will see on the MCAT, so taking good notes on
the material
is advised. Keep referring back to your notes from
these courses
throughout your undergraduate years to keep the
material fresh in
your mind. It will pay dividends when you finally
begin studying for
the MCAT. "

What your IQ was when you were three doesn't mean shit now. My IQ was
168 when I was six. It's around 150 now. The older you get, the dumber
you get.

The difference between BA and BS isn't as big as you're trying to say
that it is. I could get a BA in biology if I wanted to, and... let's
say... Avenger could get a BS in English. The only difference between
the two is that the BA is more suited to people who want a more general
curriculum, just in case they aren't completely sure that they want to
go into that degree's field. The BS is the degree of choice for people
who know almost 100% that they want to be in that field.

What's with the whole anti-woman thing, JT? This is the year 2000, double
standards have been out for years. Women CAN enjoy sex now, and NO, it does not
make them 'slutty'. That makes them women that enjoy sex.

There is no double standard. If you kill someone, you kill someone,
regardless of your fucking gender. If you want to have sex so fucking
bad, get a fucking condom, a diaphragm, spermicide, any and all
fucking contraceptives you can. If you want to sleep around
unprotected, knowing you can just kill the fucking fetus the next day,
then FUCK YOU. You have NO FUCKING RIGHT.

Okay, tell you what, why not share with us your view on what makes a woman "slut"? Not "sleeping
with everyone they run across" you seem to be constantly spewing, but some exact figures. How often,
who with, etc.

Oh-kay. Tell me then what you think of men who sleep with women they aren't attached to?Are they
"sluts" {non-gender-exclusive} as well?

I've been reading your "women's rights" line of argument for a while
now, and I'm wondering: You do realize that a zygote is not a part of a
female's body, right?

Half of the genetic material of that baby belongs to the
man, you know. And if he pays for her food, rent, clothes
and whatever to boot, then she has even less right to do
whatever she pleases to their kid.

{rolls his eyes} Okay, the man provided only the sperm, the woman's body provides everything else
required for the growth of that blob.

Typically, who provides everything for the woman so her body
can provide "everything else required etc."? (unless she's a

If I found out that a living human zygote was inside of my body, I'd
have it removed immediately. It isn't supposed to be there.

Those bacteria aren't part of my body. We just have a symbiotic
relationship.

It can not achieve life, because it is alive as soon as it is formed.
