Wellllll the official strategy guide says it's always something
different. But I think it might actually be that if you go to the side
and not strait into the battle, it will be BEST but if you go strait in
it will be MAKO.

I don't know..

The walkthrough is incorrect. The password changes every time you play
it. The method to get the password, however, stays the same.

Read the books in the library...find which books don't belong in hte
same room as the others...then note the numbers before those books and
count the letters into the titles of those books, you should get a word
if you unscramble the four letters you get

Ok, I'm lost at the scentence that says "then note the numbers before
those books and count the letters into the titles of those books."
Everyone explains this part badly. Can someone be more clear?

Well, if you read any of my posts (which are probably the only
ones worth posting) you'd know that the password lies in a 'code' within
the numbers before the titles of four misplaced books in the
libraries...simply find the ones that dont belong with the others, count
however many letters into the title that corresponds to the number before
the title, and then unscramble the the four letters to make the word which
is USUALLY Mako, but not always...the first time you play through (without
dying) should be Mako.

For all those confused with the password of the mayor, your misery is no
more. The password is totally random. I got best the first time and
then mako the second. To figure out what the pass word, go to the
library, and read all the books, in each room there are six books and
only 5 are on the same subjects. The 6th book will have a number(all of
them do, you just gotta figure out with is the right book). The number
indicate the placement of a letter in the sentence. i.e.: 5 Final
Fantasy is the best game!!!----------the secret letter here would be
"L".
do this book all the room to figure out the puzzle. You'll get
different prices depending on how many tries you took.

Interesting.. When I played, it was "BEST." I later checked with my
friend, who was playing on his PS with his own game & memory card, and
he also got "BEST." Then yet another friend came over to play (using
his memory chip; he didn't bring his game, just the chip), so we told
him to choose "BEST," which made him get it on the first try..

I guess I'll wait till my brother starts playing the game, and see what
the books say for him first..

I read in the strategy guide that it was random.

I think its only in the Japanese version.

Seeya later.

My roomate was playing before me, when I came home he was stuck here,
determined to get it right on the first try... 2 clues from the guy
later my drunk ass figured out the #'s correspondence.. etc... He got
"KING" ... when i got there tomorrow... I got "BOMB" ... then again on
another fresh game (memory card fried) ... "MAKO" ... so ... It must be
random or event specific...
