Advice Needed: What Game Should I Get?

November, I've been told) I've discovered the nifty (and exotic) world of
US import games and would like some help and opinions on the following
list of RPGs. I tend to prefer the more story-orientated games (but then I
tend to like most RPGs anyway...)
Final Fantasy Tactics
Saga Frontier 1 & 2
Star Ocean Second Story
Legend of Mana
Legend of Legaia
Parasite Eve
Azure Dreams
Any advice will be appreciated!

This game is story and gameplay masterpiece. But it's strategy spin-off, but
it's great. The translation is terrible, though.

The first game is bad, very bad. The second one isn't released yet, but it
sounds like it might live up to the greatness of the Romancing SaGa series...
>Star Ocean Second Story
My personal favorite game of all time. This game has the most deep and complex
gameplay in any JRPG. The story is a little lacking and the dialogue is
mediocre, but the game is just so much fun to play...

Not released yet, unfortunately, but I'm sure it will be really good, just like
the rest of the series...

I can't say for sure. I'd like to try it some day. People say it's pretty tough
and seems more gameplay based, with a battle system similar to that of
Xenogears.

Most people from what I've seen tend to dislike it. Everyone seems to say it's
really short.

I haven't played it and I haven't heard a lot of info on it except for the fact
that you breed monsters or something...

Great game -- turn based startagy Rpg like Vandal Hearts and Shining
Force, with a very nice job system and such. A must for any FF fan.

1: I personally love it, but alot of people hate most (most of whom have
not gotten into it). It's very free with little story, and in many ways
similar to PC Rpgs. It has a few major flaws that some people find
unforgivable, but once you look past them it's an immesely deep and
immersive game.
2: Hasn't come out in the US yet, but fixes most of the flaws of the
first. All reports say it's incredably good.

I personally don't like it, but alot fo people do. I find it tedious,
and the lack of documentaion in the manual and game hurts it immensly.
Plus it goes really slowly. The battle system is completely active, and
requires some hand-eye coordination.

Haven't played much of it, but what I did play I found really boring,
and the battles take FOREVER.

Short, but sweet. Heavy on the gore, but a cool story. It also required
hand-eye coordination, but it's not that hard until towards the end.

A very fun little game. It's 'rogue-like', consisteing of a town and a
huge 40 level, randomly floored, tower. I like it alot.

Out of the ones you listed, I'd pesonally reccomend FF Tactics, however,
I'd recommend Xenogears and Lunar SSSC over all of them. Also, soon
coming out are Grandia and Thousand Arms which also should be incredably
great.

It has a good storyline and good gameplay, but it's not a traditional
RPG. It plays more along the lines of a game like Tactics Ogre or
Vandal Hearts.

IMO the first one is a good rpg, but it has a very loose storyline to
it, so it may not be what you're looking for. The sequel has not been
released in the US AFAIK.

That's not on US soil yet either. It's also not a "normal" RPG because
of the fact it has action elements mixed in. I enjoyed the earlier
games in the series and i'm looking forward to this one, but if you're
looking to get a new game now, it's not really an option yet.

I played it for about 5 minutes, it just didn't interest me, I don't
really know why. The battle system is more action oriented than most
RPGs, but other than that I can't really comment on the game. I have
no real opinion on it.

I liked this game as well, but it's also not a "normal" rpg. This game
is more like a rouge-type game. Not too much of a story to it, so if
that's a major factor to you this might not be the game to get.

Of all the games you mentioned i'd suggest Final Fantasy Tactic the
most. It's a deep game with a great storyline and most people I know
(myself included) who have played the game have enjoyed it greatly.

SaGa Frontier!? NO! At least no for SF1. The second one's
not out here yet. But still, SF has a TERRIBLE story.

I would pass on this one. It has some neat concepts that
would improve any narrative game, but when you put
everything together...it's just...lacking.

:) Final Fantasy Tactics
The game itself is story based, but despite this, its gameplay is quite
good and unique for a strategy game. Unlike most war strategy games where
units have fixed races and classes, FF Tactics allows you to dynamically
change a character's class as you play the game, and each character can
use multiple abilities learned from multiple classes. However, don't go
expecting it to be like Myth or something - FF Tactics is turn-based and
not fully 3D. Still, it's an excellent game which I would recommend.
:) Saga Frontier 1 & 2
SaGa Frontier II isn't out in the USA, and won't be out for some time now.
The original SaGa Frontier got mixed reactions from many people in these
newsgroups. Some of the enthusiasts in here (myself included) liked the
game's interesting approach to gameplay, while everyone else was expecting
it to be more like Final Fantasy VII and thus hated it. Therefore, based
on what you said above, I wouldn't really recommend the game much, because
it's about as non-story-oriented as role-playing gets...
:) Star Ocean Second Story
GET THIS GAME. It's by far the best RPG on the PSX that I have played; no
other game on the PSX can match it in amounts of depth, subquests,
gameplay, and fun factor. And if that isn't enough to convince you, well,
the game does have 70+ endings to watch (!) depending on how you played
the game. I guess I should also say that it is a bit on the difficult side
at times...
:) Legend of Mana
I'm not expecting this game to come to the USA any time soon. In any case,
it's only been announced in Japan; the last game Square announced plans to
release any time soon was SaGa Frontier II, with nothing after that.
(Square Soft usually spends several months idle, then releases 4-5 games
at once.)
:) Legend of Legaia
I didn't think it was a bad game. It is quite difficult due to a few
epic-length battles, and I wasn't too impressed with the analog controls,
but I thought it was fun to play and win.
:) Parasite Eve
I think it's the second to most underrated game Square has released on the
PSX, behind SaGa Frontier. A lot of people like to criticize the game for
its shortness in length, because it only takes 15 or so hours to go from
start to an ending. Note the "an" in the last sentence. There are actually
two endings to Parasite Eve, but the second one is **MUCH** more difficult
to see & will take some 40-50 hours of effort. It's definitely worth a
try.

I used the Gameshark after beating PE to make my character have
unlimited bonus points, then worked my way to the top easily, and
defeated the boss, but I didn't really see an ending, just a few words
on the screen that explains some stuff that's pretty obvious from
playing the game... Is there an actual ending to go along with this or
just text?

Tactics is a great game....by far one of my favorites. I still play
it to this day, regardless.
Parasite is pretty good, though people tend to rip on the relative
shortness of the game. It was worth the play though.
I haven't played the rest, and don't really see myself getting the
majority of 'em. But I'd also like to recommend Lunar: Silver Star
Story Complete, and Xenogears.....

Not very good. Great battle engine. So-so game.

Haven't played it yet. It's supposed to be really short. And the game
is filled with tons of FMV.

I think I heard people not liking this, too.
Until I play Star Ocean and can give you an opinion about that, I'd
reccomend Final Fantasy Tactics, which is fabolous.

The second ending is just text and credits.
I just took satisfaction in knowing that it's the way the game is supposed
to end. The game's other ending shows a movie clip which suggests that
it's not the way the game is supposed to end...
