I found a list of all these RPG's on a website... (Both Japanese and
English)... for those wanting to download the ROM's, I'll just put a
number rating by each of them...

Nintendo / Famicom

Battle of Olympus (6 - action RPG with a mythical theme. It's OK, very
challenging, stiff controls)
Bloody Warriors (2 - RPG with a prehistoric theme. awful music, boring
story/gameplay)
Chaos World (never played)
Crystalis (9 - action RPG with fast controls, great story and
playability, a good variety of settings, it's just too good)
Darklord (never played)
Destiny of an Emperor (7 - fights are a little slow, all the Chinese
names are rather confusing, but the game is fun and clearly influenced
Gensou Suikoden)
Destiny of an Emperor 2 (never played)
Doublemoon Densetsu (never played)
DragonQuest (9 - see where it all started)
DragonQuest2 (5 - the weakest one in the series, IMO... way too much
level building is required, weak on story)
DragonQuest3 (10 - long, challenging, great dungeon design, had
classes, a big surprising finale, and was the perfect way to end the
Roto trilogy)
DragonQuest4 (10 - another long game with a great storyline and
interesting gameplay. introduced a unique AI system, there was even a
scene where you would play as a vendor. Graphics and music are good
for NES)
Earthbound Zero (7 - started the Mother series, the asthetic flaws of
the SNES version aren't as apparent on this)
Faria (2 - boring zelda clone with repetitive mazes... way too
challenging for its own good)
Final Fantasy (10 - it's a classic... total nostalgia trip... good
music, fun story, good playability (though in some parts it doesn't
have good balance)
Final Fantasy 2j (8 - reused many FF1 graphics, but introduced some
interesting new systems, including the "powering up without EXP
system"... was the first game with a deep plot)
Final Fantasy 3j (11 - masterpiece. Take every thing good about FF1
and up it 10 times... damn, I think i'm gonna play this again)
Ginga no San'nin (never played)
Goemon RPG (?? - I played for a couple of minutes, was enjoying, but
then the battle scenes
Heracles no Eikou (2 - ridiculous graphics and music... basically a
Greek DQ clone; nothing special about it)
Heracles no Eikou 2 (never played)
Hissatsu Shigotonin (never played)
Lagrange Point (never played)
Legend of Zelda (10 - a definite classic)
Link's Adventure (7 - good, but not as acclaimed as the others. solid
gameplay, but lacks the puzzles and secrets that made the others so
great)
Magic of Scharaza (8 - interesting twist on the RPG genre... it's part
action RPG and part turn-based. Kind of fun, though the plot is
cheesy)
Metal Max (never played)

Momotaru Densetsu (never played)
Momotaru Densetsu Gaiden (never played)
Musashi no Bouken (7 - a 1 on 1 style RPG, much like DQ1 with better
graphics and a more interesting story. Strange monster design)
Nadia (6 - chess with funky characters, and RPG battles... get to see
the translation might of J2E :) )
Niji no Silkroad (never played)
Ninja Rahoi (never played)
Otaku no Seiza (never played)
Radia Senki (10 - action RPG with AI in it, much like Secret of
Mana... Interesting story, probably my next candidate for a J2E
translation)
Saint Seiya (never played)
Saint Seiya II (never played)
Sanada Juuyushi (never played)
Sansa-rana-ga (never played)
Shinsenden (never played)
Silva Saga (never played)
STED iseki wakusei no yabou (10 - Phantasy Star for NES! weird
storyline, cool powering up system (kinda like FFA's), and a great
translation, if I do say so myself :) )
Sweet home (never played)
Tom Sawyer (5 - weak gameplay, the whole concept is stupid, and Jim
makes Barret look nonstereotypical)
Ultima 3 (7 - NES port of a classic PC game... graphics and music
improved over the PC version
Ultima 4 (5 - a brutal murder of a classic PC game)
Ultima 5 (2 - slow controls, nothing really ever happens in the game)
Uncharted Waters (never played)
Venus Wars (8 - interesting strategy RPG/motor bike war concept. Good
translation)
Villgust (9 - strange characters, but interesting fight system and
another fine translation)
Willow (9 - awesome, long, challenging action RPG with a good story
and lots of dungeons. Unfortunately, every time you save you lose all
the exp you've collected since you've last levelled up, which kinda
sucks)
Y's (NA - corrupts on my emu)
Y's 2 (NA - only played for 5 minutes)

Sega Master System

Fighting (never played)
Golden Axe Warrior (never played, though looks like a shameless Zelda
rip)
Golvellius: Valley of Doom (never played)
Miracle Warriors (7 - awesome music, though the whole "pseudo 3D"
movement is very cheesy, and there's no real direction at the outset)
Phantasy Star (11 - the game that got me totally hooked on RPGs.
ultimate gameplay, good story, fab graphics, awesome dungeons, crazy
setting... started one of the best series ever)
Spellcaster (never played)
Ultima IV (9 - Improved on the PC version in every way, except there's
no text parser for interfae with the NPC's... still much better than
the crappy NES version)
Y's: The Vanished Omens (never played)

GameBoy

Battle of Kingdoms (never played)
Cosmo Tank (4 - an action RPG, with tanks... played it a while ago,
the whole gameplay is weak and the "3D" dungeons are poorly
implemented)
Final Fantasy Adventure (10 - Like Zelda, with more of a plot...
Fabulous game, one I can play over and over again... great music)
Final Fantasy Legend (10 - good music, interesting story, and some of
the most haunting moments ever in a game)
Final Fantasy Legend 2 (7 - too many enemies attack at a time... good
story and music though)
Final Fantasy Legend 3 (3 - horrible way to end the first 3 SaGa
games... boring combat, awful music, hideous translation)
Furaino No Siren (never played)
Gargoyle's Quest (7 - was challenging, but kind of fun. The end board
was IMPOSSIBLE though... weak story, good graphics, solid controls)
Gargoyle's Quest 2: The Demon Darkness (never played)
James Bond 007 (never played)
Kingdom Crusade (never played)
Knight's Quest (7 - kind of strange... good battle animation, though
battles were only 1 on 1... Short game but decent)
Last Bible (never played)
Last Bible 2 (never played)
Magic Knight Rayearth (never played)
Mysterium (2 - weak Wizardry clone)

Ninja Boy 2 (never played)
Ninja Taro (never played)
Pokemon (all) (7 - it's catchy)
Oni 3 (8 - I played this a few years ago... it was good but I don't
remember that much about it... nice graphics, Japanese setting)
Oni 4 (never played)
Oni 5 (never played)
Quest for Camelot (never played)
Rolan's Curse (2 - where's the plot? awful music)
Rolan's Curse 2 (see Rolan's Curse 1)
SD Gundam 2(never played)
Sword of Hope(never played)
Sword of Hope 2(never played)
Technos Samaurai(never played)
Ultraman Club (never played)
Urusei Yatsura -Lum- (never played, though the NES side scroller was
awful)
Zelda 4 (10 - great gameboy game... classic gameplay, one of the best
and most heartwrenching stories ever)

GameGear

Dragon Crystal (2 - I hate Roguelike games)
Defenders of Oasis (8 - good music, Arabian setting, nice balance,
good challenge and story)

16 bit systems

Beyond Oasis (never played)
Crusader of Centy (never played, but the lead character's name is
"Corona"... how cool is that?)
Landstalker (10 - extremely challenging, but rewarding gameplay.
Awesome level design, good graphics and catchy music... Story is a
classic tale of deception, but the bad guy gets what's coming to him
:) )
Light Crusader (never played, but I heard it's made by Treasure (!) )
Master of Monsters (never played)
Might and Magic (2 - Played at Funco for 5 minutes a while ago... you
get attacked by 20 enemies at once, and teh game is ridiculously
boring)
Nadia, of the Mysterious Seas (never played)
Phantasy Star II (11 - one of the best and most dramatic plots in a
video game, awesome twists, my favorite ending of all time, phenomonal
graphics and dungeon design... I can't stop praising this game...
download NOW)
Phantasy Star III (7 - a let down compared to the other PS games, but
still a solid game, and has the cool "generations" system)
Phantasy Star IV (10 - though not as challenging as 2, it has nice
subquests, a solid story, and definitely has its moments)
Shadowrun (never played)
Shining Force (9 - got me hooked on Strategy RPG's, and still remains
one of the best examples)
Shining Force II (10 - almost exactly like Shining Force 1, but
improved tenfold... extremely long)
Shining in the Darkness (5 - no variety in areas... there's only 1 big
3D style dungeon. Graphics are good but the gameplay is stale)
Sorceror's Kingdom (never played)
Story of Thor (never played)
Sword of Vermilion (6 - this is another example of why I hate AM2...
barely any variety in areas (all dungeons look the same)... good boss
monster graphics though, even though the play mechanics get old fast)
Warriors of the Eternal Sun (never played)
Y's III (never played)

Super Nintendo / Super Famicom

difficulty)
DragonQuest 3 Remix (WANNA play... looks great)

first, but the game is good)

variety of techniques you can use)

Ranma RPG (never played)
Record of Lodoss War (never played)
Robotrek (8 - very interesting systems, though the game's balance is
off at some points (like boss battles), the translation's

but the awesome bosses who take a WHILE to beat (who have a variety of
different fighting styles) make it worthwile)

Good god... how long did it take you to type all that up (and remember all the
names of those games!?)!? :)

Only one major thing I kinda dissagree with is your Xenogears rating...
although yes, the gameplay was very shallow.... I thought the storyline more
than made up for it, Xeno was the *only* game to have a storyline so immersive
that it blew me away! My god, I wonder if there will ever be another RPG with
as a good a story, one that will make jump out of my seat once again...
Xenogears is currently my 3rd favorite game, but there is a HUGE gap between it
and my top 2, ToP and Star Ocean... ::wants Star Ocean 2nd Story and ToP
reprise::

No DQ2 is where it all started. Sure it need too much level building.
.....but Story is difinitely one of best. And the last boss was scary
too.

Yeap 3 is good. But it wasn't scary.

Wow...
Besides a few things, such as the low ratings of FF6, Xenogears, and
Chrono Trigger, I would generally agree.

Mais non! Dragon Quest II was incredible! The remix was even better!!!
The ending song is probably my favorite finale song ever! I'd give it a
9!

Yes, even though I still haven't beaten the NES DWIII so that I can play
the remix, it has always been my favorite. Jipang is just TOO COOL!

> DragonQuest4 (10 - another long game with a great storyline and
> interesting gameplay. introduced a unique AI system, there was even a

Haven't played much of this, but what I have played sucked...

> Final Fantasy (10 - it's a classic... total nostalgia trip... good

> have good balance)

Yes, but I'd give it a 9.

> Final Fantasy 2j (8 - reused many FF1 graphics, but introduced some

Yes, but I'd give it a 9.

> Final Fantasy 3j (11 - masterpiece. Take every thing good about FF1

Hmm...I think I agree here ^_^

> Legend of Zelda (10 - a definite classic)

I wouldn't give it a 10....maybe a 6 or 7.

> Link's Adventure (7 - good, but not as acclaimed as the others. solid

Ah...gotta love Zelda II.

> Breath of Fire (6 - long game, but nothing stands out)

True.

> Chrono Trigger (8 - fun, though unfulfilling characters... great
> graphics and music, good plot and lots of endings)

Mmm hmm...

> DragonQuest 1-2 Remix (10 - remixes 2 classics, 2 is toned down in

YES! A definite 10!!!

> DragonQuest 3 Remix (WANNA play... looks great)

ME TOO! But I want to beat the English version first so I know WHY I'm
doing what I'm doing.

> DragonQuest 5 (9 - weak graphics, the game's storyline is too kiddy at

Haven't played much...but the graphics suck HARD...

> DragonQuest 6 (10 - best DQ game... awesome story, fun fights with a
> variety of techniques you can use)

Haven't played much, but I like the enemy motions in battle...like DQ3r!

> Final Fantasy 4j (10 - awesome story and solid gameplay)

I'd give it a 9. Pitiful story and solid gameplay.

> Final Fantasy 5 (11 - best in the series by far... long live Jobs!)

I'd give it a 9. Pitiful story, great gameplay.

> Final Fantasy 6j (7 - not as good as the others... lots of secrets,

I'd give it a 9. Pitiful second half, but great first half.

> Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (6 - solid game, just nothing special about

I'd give it a 0. Horrible, pitiful, disgusting game. Oh wait, it had
neat music. Alright, I'll give it a 1.

> Secret of Mana (9 - great Action RPG, though very buggy... good

Agreed.

> Seiken Densetsu 3 (11 - multiple endings, unbelievable graphics and

I'd give it a 9. Terrific...TERRIFIC game. Love the actual CHALLENGE.
^_^

> Super Mario RPG (7 - good graphics and music, solid gameplay, but no
> real special/innovative systems)

I'd say 5. The game sucks...it's boring after the first playthrough. The
only thing that saves it from bein 1 or 2 is that it has Culex, an FFish
character ^_^

> Tales of Phantasia (see "Star Ocean")

I'd give it a 9. It is really neat and has a great theme song, but it
just doesn't have enough to make me finish it.

> Zelda 3 (10 - another total update of the original... fantastic game)

I'd be inclined to agree. Way better than the first 2.

> Final Fantasy VII (7 - not a good balance between story/gameplay

I'd say a 9, if for nothing but its great story.

> Final Fantasy Tactics (10 - good gameplay, though the battlefield's
> too small and you don't get enough guys to plan longterm strategy, so
> most of the battles are spent trying to overpower your enemies...

I'd say this deserves a 12. THE best game ever created. Terrific
gameplay. Equally terrific story.

> Saga Frontier (7 - quests vary in quality, but overall the game is

I'd say a....2. This game is crap in a box. I sold it...and the strategy
guide, for a measely 15 dollars...anything to get rid of its foul stench.

> Zelda 64 (NA - I've only played this game past the Deku Tree but it

I'd say a 10 like Zelda 3. Very awesome game.

an 8.8 would be a good rating imo. it's got an opening theme song that
totally isnt too bad coming from a 16-bit console. the colors are a tad 'worn
out' and not bright though.. jasrac did a nice job w/ this one definitely but
the PlayStation is much better imo

True dat. I never got around to finishing it...I really ought to,
I have the ROM...

> Final Fantasy (10 - it's a classic... total nostalgia trip... good

8. There really didn't seem to be much story at all. Well, there
was I guess, but it just wasn't very interesting nor were there
any good twists.

> Legend of Zelda (10 - a definite classic)

ZELDA IS NOT AN RPG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111111

Seriously. It's an Action/Adventure game. I don't care if you get
hearts; the Metal Gear series also gives you extra life as you go
along but I don't see anybody calling THAT an RPG. Sheesh.

> Ultima 3 (7 - NES port of a classic PC game... graphics and music
> improved over the PC version
> Ultima 4 (5 - a brutal murder of a classic PC game)

Personally, I think the ratings should be switched here. Ultima 3
seemed rather aimless, but Ultima 4 was a good enough game in
the first place that it was fun for a while.

> Final Fantasy Legend (10 - good music, interesting story, and some of
> the most haunting moments ever in a game)

8. The music was nice, there were a few cool twists, and the way
that charachters advance is cool. Other than that, it really wasn't
anything special.

> Gargoyle's Quest (7 - was challenging, but kind of fun. The end board
> was IMPOSSIBLE though... weak story, good graphics, solid controls)

I would have given it a six. Fun diversion. That's all.

> Rolan's Curse (2 - where's the plot? awful music)

4. Not total crap.

> Zelda 4 (10 - great gameboy game... classic gameplay, one of the best
> and most heartwrenching stories ever)

9. The original, LttP and TOoT were all better.

> Shining Force (9 - got me hooked on Strategy RPG's, and still remains
> one of the best examples)

Damn right. 9.

> 7th Saga (5 - way too much levelling up, only 2 guys in your party. OK
> game but not that great)

5. I never really cared that there were only two people in the party
(if there were any more it would have seriously messed with the plot),
but the battles were booooooring.

> Breath of Fire (6 - long game, but nothing stands out)

7. I thought it was fun, if a bit redundant.

> Breath of Fire 2 (never played)

7. It was a blast at first, and the plot ruled, but if BoF was
"a bit redundant", then this was the Gilligan's Island of RPGs.

The one thing that bugs me about the plot in BoF games is that
the script artificially drags it on -- in BoF3, for instance,
I must have spent five hours just trying to get on that
battlecruiser. These are five hours that could have been spent
on /interesting/ plot points, but instead just consists of
heavily layered subquests as you run back and forth trying to
get the other boat to run so you can go out there, but then
it doesn't work and you have to get a bunch of parts, and blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.
I still like the games despite myself, but I do wish they'd
stay focused.

> Chrono Trigger (8 - fun, though unfulfilling characters... great
> graphics and music, good plot and lots of endings)

9. Excellent, excellent game, but not nearly long enough. The
dialogue and plot could have also used a slight tune-up too, IMO.

> EarthBound (5 - awful graphics, music, no balance, stale gameplay)

9. Dude, it's called /atmosphere/. It's /supposed/ to look and
sound simple and childish and be silly and carefree with itself,
that's what sets it apart and lets you ignore the fact that the
gameplay is pretty much the same old stuff. It's sad that so few
people are able to see that aspect of the game.

> Final Fantasy 4j (10 - awesome story and solid gameplay)

9. I thought the gameplay was actually pretty damn good, and
that the story was solid. *shrug*

> Final Fantasy 5 (11 - best in the series by far... long live Jobs!)

8. Great job/battle system, but shallow. Yeah, I can build up
my AP and get a bunch of neat abilities, but so what? It was
fun, but there wasn't anything else. (Plot? HA!)

> Final Fantasy 6j (7 - not as good as the others... lots of secrets,
> but the game becomes very unbalanced and lacking direction near the
> end)

10. Personally, I liked the open-endedness in the second half.
Then again, I'm just about the only person in this entire newsgroup
that doesn't think that it's an utter atrocity and Square should
be thrown off a cliff for it.

> Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (6 - solid game, just nothing special about
> it)

6. Same here.

> Inindo (never played)

8. A very well-done cross-over of RPG and strategy. The (normal)
battles do get a tiny bit boring after a while, and before you've
completed the ten training dungeons you wish you could just beat
them all without levelling so you could get back to spying and
razing. Still a great game.

> Lady Stalker (hehe, what kinda title is this :) )
> Lagoon (never played)

4. Been there, done that.

> Lennus 2 (never played)
> Light Fantasy 2 (never played)
> Little Master (never played)
> Live a Live (never played)
> Lost Mission (never played)
> Lufia (never played)

7. Interesting diversion, but not much more.

> Ogre Battle (never played)

6. Mildly fun. Would have been infinitely better if you could actually
control your bloody armies during battle, IMO.

> Secret of Mana (9 - great Action RPG, though very buggy... good
> graphics and music, decent story, and good gameplay)

9. It absolutely owns, especially in MP. I do wish that the enemy
AI weren't so cheap, though.

> Secret of Evermore (6 - where's the music? the game's balance is off a
> bit (way too easy), and the plot is corn, but it's decent... just no
> SD3)

7. Good magic system, and atmospheric. That's about it, though.

> SoulBlazer (8 - great amount of secrets, solid gameplay, funky music
> (good bass), OK story but corny ending)

8. The town-building aspect was nice and the gameplay was interesting.
Not particularly innovative, though.

> Super Mario RPG (7 - good graphics and music, solid gameplay, but no
> real special/innovative systems)

8. Gameplay good. Story bad.

> Zelda 3 (10 - another total update of the original... fantastic game)

10. It rules. Enough said.

> Breath of Fire III (8 - it's long, solid gameplay, the Masters are
> kinda cool, but not very useful... Fishing kicks ass)

8. Like I said, the plot drags on without going anywhere often, but
aside
from that it's excellent.

> Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (11 - PERFECT controls, lots of
> secrets, great gameplay, awesome graphics and music... what a game)

9. Tight control, great music, nice graphics, but it just didn't
suck me in as much as it should have. Maybe I've just played too
many platformers over the ages. *shrug*

> Final Fantasy VII (7 - not a good balance between story/gameplay
> sections, not too innovative, too many "twitch" gaming parts, falls
> apart with balance towards the end, but still a decent game with sexy
> graphics and music)

10. The translation made the plot a bit more confusing than it
should have been, but aside from that it's an incredible game.

> Final Fantasy VIII (wanna play this one)

The demo is kind of dull, but then again from what I heard the
Xenogears demo wasn't that great either. I like the fact that
there's going to actually be some challenge this time, but the
draw system still worries me.

> Final Fantasy Tactics (10 - good gameplay, though the battlefield's
> too small and you don't get enough guys to plan longterm strategy, so
> most of the battles are spent trying to overpower your enemies...

8. Good gameplay, good story, but amazingly redundant.

> Suikoden (7 - short, but with a lot of secrets... repetitive battle
> system, though the large fights are kinda cool and the story's good)

8. Fun, without getting boring too quickly. There was enough
variety to keep me attached.

> Wild Arms (7 - long, some OK puzzles, mostly annoying puzzles... too
> many boring fights, not as deep as Lufia 2... cliched storyline but
> cool Wild West setting)

4. I really wanted to like this game, since the story seemed
pretty intriguing, the game had a nice polished look, the
dungeon layout was interesting and the puzzles were intelligent, but
sadly whatever redeeming qualities the game may have had were
absolutely ruined by the inexcusably slow, depressingly simplistic
and above all boring-as-hell battles. Honestly, if it weren't for
the battles I would have loved this game, but it's just TOO DAMN
BORING.

> Xenogears (6 - much too drawn out... fantastic story but where's the

7, so far. I've only gotten to Aveh, though, so I probably shouldn't
judge.

> Zelda 64 (NA - I've only played this game past the Deku Tree but it

that even comes remotely close. This game owns you.

Not true. I liked it too.... There just happen to be more people who

7. It is a good game, but it is not really great.

>Final Fantasy Legend 2 (7 - too many enemies attack at a time... good
>story and music though)

8 Pretty cool. It gets pretty battle intensive later on which annoys
me a bit.

>James Bond 007 (never played)

I have. It's a pretty neat game where you get to explore different
places, exchange things for other items and meet contacts, with bosses
to fight at the end of each task. Bit simple but good. More of an
action-rpg though. I would give it a 7.

Great, but I would give it a 9.

>Breath of Fire 2 (never played)

Too tedious for me. 5.

>Chrono Trigger (8 - fun, though unfulfilling characters... great
>graphics and music, good plot and lots of endings)

Agreed. Ace game.

>EarthBound (5 - awful graphics, music, no balance, stale gameplay)

This game rocks! 8.

>Final Fantasy 4j (10 - awesome story and solid gameplay)

9.

>Fire Emblem 3 (never played)
>Fire Emblem 4 (never played but NEED to)

8

7

7

>Lufia 2 (10 - the game Wild Arms should've been... great puzzles,

8

>Secret of Mana (9 - great Action RPG, though very buggy... good

Agreed.

8

Agreed.

>Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (11 - PERFECT controls, lots of

10

>Final Fantasy VII (7 - not a good balance between story/gameplay

9
