Physical & magical barriers - they lower the damage you get from being
attacked and the effect of magic (including good magic like Cure!).

There are two for each character in your current party. They top one
is _supposed to_ show a subjective indication of the degree to which
the corresponding character's appearance resembles that of a character
from "South Park." The bottom one is _supposed to_ be ennui.

Unfortunately, what they _do_ show is the energy remaining in Barrier
and MBarrier spells (or equivalent, like Wall or Big Guard) protecting
each person. It's a bug, you see.

Anyway, it's not like this information is plastered all over every one
of the 12,436,987,217 badly-written walkthroughs out there, or
anything. Or in the manual. Perish the thought.

Obviously, it's Squaresoft's fault for not having a 45-minute-long FMV
sequence explaining it, something like:

<wavy lines>

Cloud: Hey, everybody! Look! <faces camera, points to bottom left of
screen> It's my barrier gauges!

Red XIII's tail: <becomes a straight line and vibrates rapidly>

Barret: Son of a fucking half-a-lire whore by dogs and goats and apes!
It just isn't fair! <fires gun arm randomly into air for five
minutes> <weeps> Fuck! Shit! Anglo-Saxon words for bodily
functions! No Nintendo cocksuckers telling us what we have
to cut from the dialogue! God dammit!

Cloud: <pokes barrier gauge with stick> <becomes flickery outline as
PSX attempts to display "Cloud", "Other Cloud", "Young Cloud"
and "Zack" sprites all in the same location> Bzzzap!

Vincent: It furthers one to see the great man.

Every other character: Shut up, Vincent!

Hojo: <appears from nowhere> How well proceeds my _other_ other
experiment! The one in which with some Jenova cells and
spare macaroni noodles this spell on you I will now cast!
Ha ha ho hee hee ho foo! <gesticulates wildly, vanishes>

Luminescent trapeziod: <appears in briefly in front of Cloud>

Lithuanian national anthem: <plays in crappy FM-synthesized MIDI
orchestration>

Cloud's barrier gauges: <fill with colored stuff>

Aerith: Mmphth wmbbm ththbl mmbm!

Cloud: Yes. The barrier gauges. The second moon. The sleeper must
awaken! <gazes purposefully in some random direction>

Sephiroth: <appears from nowhere, freezes Aerith solid, mircotomes her
into 0.1mm slices, burns each one, encases the ashes in blocks
of concrete which are then fired into the sun, which explodes,
twice>

Cloud: Oh my God! You've killed Aerith!

Barret: You bastard!

Everyone on AGFF: How do you revive Aeris?

Screen: <makes a familiar blurry clockwise twist that's pretty neat the
first, oh, fifty billion times you see it, while cheesy music
plays>

Throbbing Stick Figure: <hits Cloud with Giga Fish Slapping Attack>

Cloud's barrier gauge: <amount of colored stuff shrinks slightly>

Cloud: <looks more puzzled than hurt as the digit "2" appears briefly
in front of him>

Cloud: <hits Throbbing Stick Figure with Mega Heat Death of Universe>

Throbbing Stick Figure: <takes outlandish damage, dies>

<cut to: really impressive FMV of Cloud and someone we've never seen before
brandishing just a whole bunch of nasty-looking objects that might be
weapons of some sort>

Sorry about that. It wasn't a bad question, really. I'm just upset with
myself, really. I don't know why I've wasted so much time and oxygen
playing such a profoundly silly game. Or posting about it in a newsgroup,
for that matter.

They show you how much longer Protect (Barrier) and Shell (MBarrier) will
hold out, if you have them cast on you.

THAT'S what it's supposed to do? Well, they should add that to the list of
changes for a FF7 remake.

It's a conspiracy, I tell you.

What do people use manuals for? Drink coasters? Despite the fact that some
manuals serve a better purpose as coasters, how in the hell do you lose a
manual? Am I the only person on the entire Planet that keeps the manual
relatively close to the game itself?

Oh my!

This entire scene seems plausible to me. I should be worried. I don't know
if it's AGFF, or seeing Cloud talking to the pointing hand that explains
about the field guides. (Ladders and entrances and stuff)

What do ya mean "Final Fantasy 7 remake list"?

On a bulletin board at a website I frequent, they started a discussion a
while ago how Square should do a remake of FF7. There was talk of a
petition, but I didn't follow the discussion enough to know if they started
one.

Somebody claimed that they had interviewed Square representatives, and they
confirmed that certain things had been left out because of time constraints.
I'm not even sure this guy was serious; it sounds like a rehash of the
biggest "Aer*s rev*val" rumor around. He claimed that the following were
orignally going to be in the game but were left out at the last minute:

--Yes, Aeris does get revived at some point. [I find this unlikely because
it would screw the story up, wouldn't it?]
--Zack joins the party. [This could be an inside joke. The website's for
"cheat devices", namely Gameshark, and people are always asking for a code to
play as Zack. Even though there's no battle sprites for him.]
--Uses for some items, like the Super Sweeper and 1/35 Soldiers, I suppose.
--Some explanations in the story.
--There's probably other stuff I've forgotten.

This is where the idea of Square to do a remake of Final Fantasy 7 came from.
I don't know what they were going to do about it. I didn't really care.

Personally, the guy might have been talking out his ass when he said he heard
this from Square. He talked like he was from some video games website. If
this was true, it's still doubtful that Square would do a remake. If they
did, it's as good as saying "We released FF7 before it was completely
finished because we wanted money NOW! NOW! NOW!" Confirming some people's
speculations. Final Fantasy 7 seems complete as it is. Anything that
doesn't seem explained is probably poor storyline development, not because
they rushed the game. If any of this was meant to be in there, people would
have found it. The items that have no use would have been removed from the
game; you wouldn't have been able to get them without a Gameshark. There
would be some clues.

For instance, the original Japanese version has some materia that are
disabled. One is called "Law", that has Coin Toss and Throw on it, like the
opposite of the Throw materia. Most people think it's a joke by the
programmers. To get a lawyer, you have to throw money at them. One is an
Underwater materia, the purpose of which was revealed in the US version. The
others are different spells that come off the Barrier Materia. The were
indiviual materia for Barrier, MBarrier, Wall and Reflect, I think. This is
simply the thought process of the programmers at work. They had different
materia before deciding to put all the spells on one materia. There was also
a "Booster" materia, which is assumed to give a bonus to AP, much like the
Gil Plus and Exp Plus materia. But they later decided that materia growth
would be regulated by the weapons and armor.

These materia exist in the Japanese version, but the pointers have all been
erased. The only way to find them is to look through the code. If there was
anything else hidden in the game, somebody would have found it by now.
