Because AFSM was full of snotty polarizing egotists who really needed
something better to do with their time than split the group in half,

Umm, no, it's really not like that. It's still a social taboo, and as
such, it's more frequently used to put someone down. It's not usually
an insult taken seriously, but an insult nonetheless. An example of
this would be in Stephen King's The Stand, where two girls are putting
this guy down (to each other), and that's one bit of fodder used. Don't
ask me how I remember such a little detail. I probably don't remember
the rest of the book half as well. :)
Even atheism can be an insult, in the right (extremist) circles, though
an atheist would never hear that one told as an insult to his/her face,
and hence is null and void. :)
