What an amazing soundtrack! FAR better than that shoddy "Reunion
Tracks" from FF7. This one hearkens back to the great sounds like FFVI
Grande Finale and FFV Dear Friends, with some awesome battle remixes
like in FFIII Eternal Legend of the Wind! Here are my opinions on the
tracks.

01 Liberi Fatali -- Unchanged from the game, but perfect nontheless.
The song was recorded live anyhow, so it can't be bad.

02 Blue Fields -- I know many people hated the overworld music for FF8.
Personally, I liked it. However, after listening to this arrangement,
the OSV version is pure crap. This song is beautiful and mysterious.
Visuals. I can actually picture Rinoa sitting on a green, grass covered
hill staring off at the gorgeous landscape. The sky is grey, and it's
eerily calm (like before a storm), but its truly amazing. This song is
perfect.

03 Don't Be Afraid -- This is a powerful, orchestral arrangement of the
FF8 battle music. To be honest, I didn't really care for the battle
music in the original. I preferred FF4 and 5's. However, this song is
awesome! It has moments of suspense and sheer power. The transitions
between these moments are flawless as well. I can't really get a vivid
image in my mind, but it's an incredible remix, that's for sure.

04 Balamb Garden ~ Ami -- Again, Balamb Garden was a song that quickly
became tiring for me in the OSV, probably because you hear it so much
and with the volume up, the treble makes it sound terrible. However,
this version is very soft and pretty. It's a touching song, and for
some reason, I picture Selphie when I hear it. She's not in that ugly
yellow thing though. She's in her SeeD uniform. I can see the other
SeeDs too...all going about their business in the Garden. Ultimecia
must already be gone, because everthing's peaceful. No more evil
witches. No more war declarations. No more missile attacks. Yeah, this
would be the perfect song if FF8's ending had continued on even
further....gorgeous.

05 Fisherman's Horizon -- Well, when I first heard the opening to this
song, I was frozen in terror. Those weird christmas carolers don't
sound bad, but they would if they sang through the whole song. However,
they just sing the first few opening notes. Then the song begins to
sound like the town music from FFV and I'm confused (since that songs on
the Dear Friends album). However, then it turns into a recognizable FH
theme. :-) And I must say, it's quite nice. You can almost smell the
sea foam and feel the ocean breeze. This a really relaxing song. No
harsh, fast paced moments, though it gets pretty loud at times (in a
good way ^_^)

06 FITHOS LUSEC WECOS VINOSEC -- Whoa! This song opens with silence.
Then some really strange sounding guy says
"Fithos....Lusec....Wecos....Vinosec"....he repeats the chant and more
and more people join in, and then the orchestra quickly goes from 0 to
60 in two seconds and the fun begins! This song is INCREDIBLE. It's
combines the "FLWV" song with the "Succession of Witches" song
perfectly! It's truly amazing. You can visualize the entire Witch's
Parade happening (not that that is really hard, since most of it was in
FMV form to begin with :-P) I thought this was just another "taken from
the OSV" track, but NO way! Near the finale, some strange lady begins
singing...and not the standard chant. She sounds like the same
mysterious female who sings in the Dear Friends soundtrack. She
suddenly stops and the chanting becomes weaker...and less people start
chanting until there's just one person left....and the final "Vinosec"
is chanted.....coooooool :-)

06 Eyes on Me -- Very pretty. Same as the game. The ending version is
better. The in-game playthrough should've been accompanied by an FMV.
Not much more to say.

08 The Man With the Machine Gun -- YEEEEEEES! THIS song is THE BEST
track on this album! Hands DOWN! It's powerful to the extreme and fits
Laguna, the best male character in FF8, to a T!! You can't help but
want to dance to this phenomenal remix. While this song plays, I can
picture the great hero Laguna Loire traveling all over the world, fixing
the world's problems and fighting for justice all by himself (sorry
Kiros...Ward...). He's like the James Bond of FF8. This song is
heroic, but has an neat, oriental/techno flair to it. You've just got
to hear it to believe it! It's beyond awesome! There's a suspenseful,
yet powerful part in about 3/4's into it. Vintage Laguna...that's this
song! There's nothing more I can say about it! If you buy this CD for
only ONE reason, it should be for this song!

09 Dance With the Balamb Fish -- Well, this a very neat waltz. It's
easy to picture the SeeD Inauguration Ball here, since the song DOES
play there. In fact, I picture Squall and Rinoa dancing to this song
rather than Waltz for the Moon. Very nice song...though they played it
in some really stupid spots in the game. Actually, they never really
put it to good use in the game. Using it for the Lunar Base was just
stupid. Forget where they used it in the game though, because this
arrangement is a masterpiece!!

10 Love Grows -- This is a very pretty arrangement of the Eyes on Me
theme without the lyrics. It combines the in-game "Love Grows" with the
piano solo "Julia". Very pretty. When I hear this song, I can
visualize Julia's ghost playing the piano while Rinoa and Squall stare
into eachother's eyes amidst the millions of flowers in the flower field
by Edea's orphanage. Then, I can see Laguna and Raine standing in
Winhill's flower fields. This song is so pretty it almost makes me want
to cry. This song summarizes the entire love theme of Final Fantasy
VIII. It's beautiful and absolutely flawless.

11 The Oath -- The Oath was a very boring, forgettable track for me in
the game. Well, this is probably the weakest track on the soundtrack.
It's played very well and all, but it just didn't conjure up and
meaningful images or feelings for me. It's still good, but the others
are far better. Maybe it's just because I found that whole Garden to
Garden combat climax a bit corny...well...but I don't know how to do it
any better :-) A good song though.

12 Ending Theme -- It's the ending theme to the game. Perfect. 'Nuff
said.

13 Fragments of Memories -- I'm sorry, but I did NOT find the Orphanage
plot twist to be stupid at all. I thought that the scene where they
remembered it to be very nice. Hell, I don't remember any of my friends
when *I* was 4 or 5....and I'm not even as old as they are and I never
junctioned with a GF EVER!! Anyhow, this song is arranged similarly to
the way "Kids Run Through the Stree Corner" was in Grande Finale. I
really like the vilions and stuff and this is a really nice track. I
can picture the orphanage and lives of the kids when I hear this
song...unfortunately, since it does sound so similar to "KRTTSC" from
Grande Finale, I picture the orphanage to be a Neo Victorian building
like those found in FF6 rather than the Greek temple-ish orphanage in
the game...^_^ But who cares!? It's still good!

OVERALL: This is probably the BEST arranged album you could ever get!
It doesn't really have any BAD tracks. It's got actual SONGS (with
lyrics, that is), as well as fast paced, exciting battle remixes and
slow, beautifully orchestrated tracks. No other soundtrack comes close
except the Eternal Legend of the Wind soundtrack, but that was done
mainly with synthesizers and had the HORRID narrator. This is, hands
down, the most superb Final Fantasy Soundtrack released to date. ^_^
Get it...and love it.

Definatly better than the OST version, but still the worst on the disc.

I always loved the original, and this version is very good but could
have been more pwerful.

You pretty much sum it up. Very soothing and relaxing.

Yeah again, very nice.

This piece was always cool. It's just cooler now.

Again, I wish they arranged it -- an orchestral non-vocal arrangement
would have been SWEET.

Only thing that bugs me is that that there isn't enough
percussion...otherwise it rules.

It's good. Very nice and pretty I like how it's a different arreangement
than Eyes on Me itself.

I think they did a great job with a forgettable piece.

I think this piece works SO well for orchestra it's uncanny.

Of course, your judgement is based that FF *has* to be the
best....that's not true. But it IS better than any other the orchestral
soundtracks I own.

recorded live....is there a song that isn't recorded live?

well, anyway...

about two minutes ago, I played this on my guitar :

-------
------3
----2--
--4----
0------
-------

and then the arpeggio back (and you can finish of with an Asus4 to A chord
to make it sound..uh..finished), play it in a harp kinda way. It sounds like
a ffviii song...only, I can't remember what and I'm too lazy to go get my
ost. I'll work to get the whole song in tabs tomorrow once I figure out what
it is.

On the FF8 OSV? Yes...try like...any of them except for maybe 4.

F|;P~ 01 Liberi Fatali -- Unchanged from the game, but perfect nontheless.
F|;P~ The song was recorded live anyhow, so it can't be bad.

I wish they would rearrange it though, but still it is good.

I think this one is above average, it kinda gets repetitive at the

To me this is the best track in the album. That screaming lady thing at
the end kinda scared the hell out of me the first time, but it sounds

F|;P~ Not much more to say.

I think this version is better than the ending version. I agree when this
song is played during the game it should be in FMV! Man, it really isn't
pretty seeing polygon Rinoa sitting on polygon Squall's lap, it looks just
bad. It would be an awesome scene if it was done in FMV, just put the
dialog at the bottom. (But of course, it would be a 5 min FMV, it will be
HUGE)

F|;P~ 08 The Man With the Machine Gun -- YEEEEEEES! THIS song is THE BEST

I'm kinda surprised they put this song in the album, this is one of my
favorite track in the OSV. Sounds even better this time.

F|;P~ 11 The Oath -- The Oath was a very boring, forgettable track for me in
F|;P~ the game. Well, this is probably the weakest track on the soundtrack.

Same as above.

F|;P~ 12 Ending Theme -- It's the ending theme to the game. Perfect. 'Nuff

I agreed.

F|;P~ 13 Fragments of Memories -- I'm sorry, but I did NOT find the Orphanage

Actually I think so too. :P I really don't have a problem with that
part. There are bunch of worse ones out there. I actually think that
part is kinda sweet. :P:P:P

Anyway, I can't quite recall which song it is in OSV. It sounds sort of
familiar. :P It is still good though I think it is one of the weaker
tracks in this album.

Thanks for the review, Frioniel. Just a quick note, though: it appears
that on the OST they accidentally switched the titles of the two songs,
"Dance with the Balamb-Fish" and "Waltz for the Moon." I base this
statement one three observations,

1) "Dance with the Balamb-Fish" perfectly fits Squall and Rinoa's dance
scene -- Rinoa is from Timber/Galbadia, and Squall is the "fish" from
Balamb. Indeed, someone who can't dance is commonly described as
dancing "like a fish." And obviously, "Waltz for the Moon" perfectly
fits as the title for the music that plays in the Lunar Base. Fitting
them the other way around requires considerable stretching of one's
imagination.

2) The ordering of the tracks on the OST tend to reflect their
approximate chronological occurrence in the game, dictating that DwtBF
should come in the first disc and WftM should come in about the third,
rather than vice versa.

3) They sound similar in the beginning, and they're both waltzes, easily
accounting for the title mix up on the OST.

4) This would explain while why you can easily picture Squall and Rinoa
dancing to "Dance with the Balamb-Fish"!

HOWEVER, you seem to be saying that on this arranged album, this song is
not the one Rinoa and Squall dance to, in which case, I would of course
be mistaken, in spite of the healthy body of evidence for my claim.
Hence the reason for my posting this. :)

Yeah, I think so too...

Well, in the OSV, Dance with the Balamb-fish DOES come on Disc 3...but if
they transposed the titles...I know they did this with the FF1+2 soundtrack.
The standard Temple of Chaos title was transposed with the Undersea Shrine
title. The music that plays in the Undersea Shrine is the same as that
played in the Temple of Chaos at the beginning of the game, not the one
played at the end.

Mm hmm....

Well, DwtBF (as titled by the OSV) DOES play during the party, right before
Rinoa asks Squall to dance. That's why I could easily picture them dancing
to it. However, your most valid point was the analysis of the titles against
their use in the game. I think I may agree with you that the titles were
transposed....but, even if they were transposed, the song still doesn't fit
the locale. It should've been something mysterious and cool, like FF4's
moon. I loved that song!

Yes, I've begin playing FF8, and it has a superb soundtrack... I still don't
think it's better than the One Winged Angel though... but Liberi Fatali sure
comes close (and that awesome music of that FMV where Squall and the others
strike Dollet by sea... awesome FMV too.)
(Talking about RPG music, is it just me or Lufia 2's Sinistral's Boss music
is awesome?)

Try:

www.animenationc.com
www.tokyopop.com
www.animenation.com
www.cdjapan.co.jp
www.gamemusic.com

All are reliable. If you plan to buy more, avoid ANYTHING published by
"SM" at Gamemusic -- they are illegal bootlegs.

Godwin's Law: /prov./ [Usenet] As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a
comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one. There is a tradition in many groups that,
once this occurs, that thread is over, and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost
whatever argument was in progress. Godwin's Law thus practically guarantees the existence of an
upper bound on thread length in those groups.

"Wizard's First Rule: People are stupid. People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost
anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie
beacuse they want it to be true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People's heads
are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true.
People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and
yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool." - From Wizard's First
Rule, by Terry Goodkind

"The Second Dimension of Frame Quality, The Color Depth, refers to the number of the counting,
be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, 'Bless This, O Lord,
That With It Thou Mayst Blow Thine Enemies To Tiny Bits, In Thy Mercy.' And the people did
rejoice and did feast opon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans
and breakfast cereals...And the Lord spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin.
Then, shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shalt be the number thou
shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither
count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number
three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch
towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.'" - Monty Python and the Quest
of the Holy Grail.

Corneo: Woo-hoo! I choose...THIS ONE!!
Cloud: *Blushes*
Corneo: OK, let's go play Checkers!
Cloud: Checkers?
Corneo: Yeah! I'm the best Checkers player on earth! I GET TO BE RED!!!
Cloud: <Reads script> I thought you were supposed to...
Corneo: SHHHH!!! This is the 64! We can't use ANY foul language, and we can't have any
innapropriate scenes either. In short, this is FF7 for a 6-year-old!!
Cloud: Really? Darn.
Corneo: Yeah. Sucks, huh?
VOICE OF MIYAMOTO: WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE!! YOU CAN'T SAY "SUCKS" ON THE
64!!
Corneo: Sorry...
Cloud: Why do YOU get to be Red, anyway?
Corneo: Cuz you're just a @#...<Notices Miyamoto glaring at him>...I mean...a big Poopy Pants.
Cloud: Doo-Doo head.
Corneo: Wee-Wee head.
Cloud: Tinkle Brains.
VOICE OF MIYAMOTO: HEY!! I TOLD YOU TO WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE!!
Cloud/Corneo: We can't even say THAT!?
Cloud: This su...er...this is dumb. Let's move our game over to the PlayStation.
Corneo: Good idea.
<Suddenly, with a big *Poof!!*, Final Fantasy 64 disappears into a cloud of smoke, and in it's
place is the FF7 CD>
VOICE OF MIYAMOTO: NUTS. NOW WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO FOR AN RPG FOR THE
64? OH WELL, LET'S JUST GET ANOTHER CUTESY-GAME FROM RARE AND CALL IT
GOOD.

Most will. CDJapn definatly will, and Gamemusic definatly will. The
others I'm not positive about, so check thier sites.

No, that would be the best place to buy FF8 OST, condering it's the only
one they are (at the moment) going to sell.

<Sure will. Prolly' cost extra though.

It won't cost too much. However, if you order something to a foreign
country, you should check the custums tax there. It could practically
double the price, in some cases!

Also, "We regret that we are unable to accept and ship orders outside of
the US and Canada.". So you won't even be able to get the FF8 OSV
there.

Actually I am quite pleased about this, because I would be very annoyed
if I could buy Xenogears for cheaper than I did.

One other place to buy from is Otaku, they are 100% reliable and if they
have the item in you'll get it next day.

What ever u do, do not order from Project K they sell pirated soundtracks
and I bought Xenogears OST from them for 25 quid, the cover was photocopied
and looked totally bad, and it was only sent with one disc. Which the guy
who worked there said that's how it came. hahahahaha yeah right Square
selling half of it's soundtrack.

Otaku are good because one of their people has moved to Japan and set up a
shop there as well. They are extremely friendly and you have to be a
member, membership is free and all you have to do is call. They are based
in the UK and Japan and sell 100% OST from most games from Capcom, to
Square, they also sell a truckload of Manga stuff so check them out.

Sorry, newbie question here:

How many different music CD's for FF8 are there? I know there is the
Orignal Soundtrack and the Orchestar Version. Is this Fithos Lusec
Wecos Vinosoc CD that you are referring to one of these? Thanks for
any clarification!

Yeah, the orchestral one is FLWV. There's that, the OST, and the 'Eyes
on Me' CD Single.
