After lamenting over this never-ending roller coaster ride for
countless weeks, I'm sending out a plea for any kind of assistance on
how to scrounge together more than 5,000+ points on this accursed Gold
Saucer attraction.

Even with all of the assorted stategy guides and FAQs out
there... even with one of those fancy Barracuda controllers with
auto-fire and slow motion... I can't seem to conquer this devious and
nasty little game. Are my reflexes really that bad? I can't even get
that supposed 30,000 point glitch with the zeppelin propeller to kick
in for me... and I've tried on countless occasions.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me or am I destined to let
this thing drive the rest of my sanity away? :)

ya know this reminds me (BTW i have never been able to get over 4500 so i
can't help you)...has anyone else seen cloud puke when you ride the speed
coaster one too many times...i only saw this once. he does it when you get
off before you see the total on the scoreboard.

Does that blasted 30,000 glitch work in the U.S. version at all? I
must have tried billions of times to do that before giving up and doing
it the old-fashioned way.
The only advice I can give is try to memorize where all the enemies
pop up so you can pick them off. There's an invisible rock in the
caverns at the top of the screen near the beginning somewhere (sorry I
can't describe it's location in more detail) worth 200 Points. You can
take out one of the lights at the very end for 200 more. Beating the
boss is _essential_! Don't even try for the 30000 bonus; you're likely
better off trying to hit those erratic UFOs and the bullets at this
point. The ice cavern is a good place; try to hit the sparkles for 70
points, and the icicles are relatively easy to hit at 40 pts. a pop. The
cacti near the beginning are easily hit, and although they have low
point values, it's better than nothing. (I can't begin to tell you how
many times I came up with 4995 or 4980 or something where just _one_
_more_ _bloody_ _cactus_ would have gotten me my 5000 points. :)

Hope that helped a little.

I have never seen that, and I have wasted far too much of my life on
this game. I guess I wasn't paying much attention to Cloud.

Do you win anything for getting a high score on this attraction (other then
a great sense of satisfaction)? Or are you just trying to do this for
fun? If this is for fun, I suggest you stop now. Sounds like you're
losing your mind.

Yes. If you score 5000 or above, you win an Umbrella for Aerith (disc
1), or some weapon for Cid (disc 2+3).

Err...are you sure about that? I heard you get the toy Shinra soilders...

Yes, I'm quite sure. You win either toy Shinra soldiers or replicas of
Sephiroth's Masamune if you score between 3000-4999 points.

the big suprise scorer in speed square is (drum roll please...) the paddle
boat. the versus guide says that you only get one point for each hit of the
paddle, but this is untrue. it you start firing right when it appears, and
just keep autofiring/tapping the button, you can rack upwards of three or
four hundred points even without autofire.

i've never been able to get the zepplin, so i just leave it be and
concentrate on getting points from fish and such.

with say 400 from the paddleboat, two hundred each from the invisirock and
light, and 1000 from the saucer, you're well on your way there.

What is the trick to this game? I can't get above 3000!
Is it just practice or am I missing something?

Thanks

Practice, mostly. See an earlier post that I made in this thread for
some tips on increasing your score.

The reason the game is so hard is because, I think, most of us are used to
flight simulators or games like Descent or X-Wing where you press up and
you go down. The control on the coaster is so odd because I push up to
move my target down and it goes up. Really messes with ya.

Good point, I had the same problem. An "invert y" control in the options
