It's my third time through FF7 and I'm trying to build up experience/AP.
I got to the Northern Crater and took the upper left path to get the
Counter materia, etc. but instead of continuing to the final meeting
place, I returned to the area where the party first splits up and
climbed all the way to the surface. After getting a Gold Chocobo,
etc. I've returned to the crater and taken the lower left path but when
I go back to the splitting up area again the game won't let me climb up
the two stalactites to return to the surface and fight the other
weapons! Am I stuck now? Where did I go wrong?

The point of no return's not until you jump down into a glowing
green pit. You can still go up, even though it may take a little
working to find the right positions, etc. Turn on the helper thing
and try again.

You should be able to 'use' the stalactites [sp?] with the OK button -
put ASSIST on and there should eb a green triangle over them. You can
actually go further in than you have - you can talk to the other party
members and still get back up providing you don't go down. I'm not usre
if you can go part-way down but you certainly can't get back from
fighting Jenova*Death

I didn't realise there was counter materia in the NC - I always went for
SHIELD and MEGA-ALL. I got counter from Cosmo Canyon.

I never had any trouble getting out. The actual point of no return is when
you walk down the path after you meet the party and they tell you which
items that they got. As far as I know, you should be able to get out of the
Northern Cave anytime until you go down into the very bottem of the cave.
