It is a little tricky to understand the 'junction' system at first; but
it eventually gets sooo simple...you just have to learn it by using it.

One tip- Draw a lot of every kind of spells, from every enemy...you'll
need them. Disc 4 will be literally impossible without them...100 of
every kind you should strive for.

FF8 final battle is THE MOST EXTREMELY DIFFICULT battle of ANY FF....but
soooooo good.

Now for my own opinion. FF8 had to be the worst piece of trash I've
ever subjected my PSX to. The absolute ONLY thing I enjoyed about the
game were the intro and outro FMV's. Oh wait.... Laguna had some
promise.. anyways...
Reasons: Hero is a jerk, forced love story, Triple Triad was Square's
way of trying to distract you from how bad this game SUCKED!, hero is
a jerk, the characters were cardboard cutouts (ie. no redeeming
personality), the end boss was an easy b*tch to take out, hero is a
jerk.. oh wait, I think I already mentioned that one. Nice little plot
fix, Square... the stupid orphanage "twist". Shall I go on?
I beat FFVIII for two reasons:
a) to add it to the list of FF games beaten,
b) hoping that the end FMV would rock (which it did), possibly halfway
making up for the rest of the crap game (which it didn't).
Buuuuut, this is only my opinion... *shrug* I don't speak for the
masses (yah, yah, I can hear that collective sigh already).

PPS: I agree with Quinch's PPS

Everyone had a lot of promise... the only problem is that is that's just what it stayed. A promise,
nothing more.

Actually, if they did that "I hate you, but I think I love you" thing properly, it could've rocked.

Well, it was distracting.....

True.

Really? :-}

Oh god.... yeah, that one almost made me puke. Thing is, if they worked that bit just a little, like it
was Cid's plan or something to get them all together for some XYZ reason, it could've been a great plot
twist. Instead that "oh, so we were all together as kids? Well, cool.... let's move on" approach
pounded the plotline into squishy goo...

Pretty much the old "I've gone this far, I'm sure as hell gonna beat it" state of mind.

Don't think I played a SS game whose ending didn't... ;-}

My opinion? The game *could've* rocked. Maybe it even *could've* rivalled FF7 in terms of plotline and
atmosphere. {hears a "Flames... ready... PULL!" in the distance} Hell, it shows glimpses of a real
masterpiece, like that orphanage twist or Seifer's bad-guy-in-the-rough character, and with the hideous
incompetence {especially if you take SS's standards into the equation} and halfhearted feel of the whole
game, those few glimpses are practically the only things that prevent it from being an utter heap of
trash. Of course, there may be a remake one bad, but the chances of that are practically zero...

At least with Sephiroth, if you DIDN'T use KotR it could be a challenge...in
FF8 you didn't have anything like that and it was still a sinch.

Well, I liked it at first, but then the game became just too boring.
Too "mixed" up. Great graphics and sound, wonderful cgi cut-scenes,
but that's it. Replay value is exactly zilch. I played it once, beat
it, and then sold it. Did'nt think twice.

Also, if you like Final Fantasy games, try FF4 and FF5, and of
course, FF6......or you could number your Final Fantasies correctly.

I really did not like it.  I really, really did not like it.  I'm not sure exactly what it was I don't like about it, but I'm sure it has to do with two words..."Squall" and "Whatever."

After playing this game I never wanted to say that word again.  Just because of that moron, Squall, and his extremely redundant use of that word, every time I hear someone say "Whatever" I go into seizures and pass out... Here is a little example of how much of a retard he is:

Rinoa, Quistis, and Selphie:  "Squall, I want you!!!"    (That is basically what they are thinking the entire game!)
Squall:  "Whatever... (Walks away)"

Now that is just some of the problems with this game.  Others are:  The stupid orphanage thing, the junction system, and the list goes on, but it is late and I am too tired to think of anything else.

I guess the only good thing was the graphics...and the design of most of the GFs.

Of course, this is all just my opinion.

ff8? good boy. (this is a non-gender specific good boy)
I didn't mind ff8, althoug it's all been downhill since
ff5 (I haven't played 6 much, and what I did play was on anthology.
Don't kill me). It was still worth the play through though.
Complex it was, however I don't think it was aimed at 10yolds.
I guess the easiest and least satisfying way to get the full
ff8 experience is to play through the cave of fire, maybe
even to dollet.
Then extract all the movies off your cd's and watch them.

Presto, gamein3hours

Don't know firsthand, but people say FF Anthology sucks. Try playing FF6 on a SNES emulator or
something.

In one of the first reviews I saw of FFVIII, the reviewer complained
about the uneven difficulty, that most was easy then a really
difficult boss would turn up, he then went on to say that he has spent
weeks on the final boss cause it's impossible, so presumably it must
be hardish to newbies, perhaps... if you didn't junction at all... and
only had Ifrit in your GFs... and had no items whatsoever... and had
everyone at level 1.
Trying to kill Omega without cheating (ie. using Heros, Holy Wars, the
End etc.) is a challenge, but if you have the 100 Heros and Megalixers
and a few aura spells even he is *very* easy

Triple triad! I love the card game in ff8.. There are two things you
can do with it. 1: Complete the set (get a gold star, heehee)
2: Change cards into items with a skill you will learn later for
a gf you have now (I think. Been a long time). For example, 1
gilgamesh card will turn into 10 holy wars / hero medicines (again,
can't remember). Anyway, play it all you can. Best rules, from memory,
were balaam garden rules + same/plus.
Head on over to http://www.gamefaqs.com for a list of cards and howtos.
They're good like that. But don't read the walkthroughs. Until you're
stuck, or you'll regret it.

as for good cut scenes, the end one fairly rocks.
Of course. You've a fair way to go till then though.
Most of the disc-ends have fmv's that are reasonable.
The whole sorceress edea time period thing is filled with them.

Oh yes. Try and turn of html posting in whatever newsreader you're

Maybe you should do what the cheaters and panseys do and get rid of all your
7 and below level cards and only keep your corners. Oh, come on! I can
honestly say I kicked the Card Queen's ass with cards below level 7 because
of the rules. If you can't do the math or trap your enemy, then you pretty
much suck at the game and need more practice.

Don't just enjoy the exterior, but value the story as well. So what if 6 on
down wasn't 3 dimensional (with the exception of the airship and chocobo in
6).

I'm starting to understand the gameplay alittle better now.I'm at the
part on disk one where they are at the parade but i have to repeat that
whole area right from where the first talk to the general,(yep i forgot
to save but it's ok because i get to see that whole parade scene again)
i lost to the two beasts that were attacking Riona.Actually,so far the
game has been awesome except that i didn't know how the gameplay
functioned in the beggining. But now it's like i cant wait to see what
happens next.

Well the first disk is really the best, but it seems to go downhill
from there. The cut-scenes get better, but the story doesn't. You'll
play it once, like it, and then put it away for all time...

Have you tried FF4, and FF6 yet? Or have you learned to number your
Final Fantasies correctly yet?

FFVII was rendered in blacker, darker backgrounds, while the artists wanted to
use a more colorful, bright approach to FFVIII. I thought that both games were
equally as good and I really enjoyed the storylines.

I "whupped" Sephiroth without a KotR (he was easy and never used a devastating
attack on me, leading me to believe that his attacks are random). Did you beat
Omega Weapon without cheating? By this I mean without card modding for Heroes,
Holy Wars, etc.? Disc 4 and the time compression setting (Ultimecia's Castle)
gave me a jolt. It just seemed so surreal and different from the settings of
the other discs. I really liked the suspense leading up to the Deling City
Parade and the assassination attempt.

The toughest card players are the Queen of Cards and Edea. The CC Club was
easy, but I guess everything depends on the rules. You can always spend lots
of time at Balamb Garden playing cards with easier rules, but your SeeD rank
will eventually be demoted.

I liked the WOR. Hunting people down was fun. And the airship music ruled.
Shame they did expand on Gogo's character much, she had a lot of potential
to be a great character.

I don't know what your newsreaders are doing, but the only "HTML" in that
post was a link at the bottom. Maybe you need to check what options you
have selected in OE.
and you know how I feel about HTML... I wouldn't be defending this guy

Yeah I really enjoyed TT, even if the Card Queen quest is one of the
most infuriating things I've ever met (yeah, I know you can get the
cards later on but that's cheating, just like using heros)

The problem with mods is they make the game way too easy, even Omega
is simple if you have 100 heros and 100 megalixers to hand

>Anyway, play it all you can. Best rules, from memory,

Best rules:
Open
Same/Same Wall (once you've got several character cards) Plus is good,
but you have to pay attention, as it's really easy to fall victim of a
huge combo at the end of a game
Differance

Worst
no Open
Same/Plus/Same Wall (I'm sure the opponent cheats, I'm always being
comboed without open)
Elemental
Random (arrgh)
All

I've probably forgotten some but I haven't played FFVIII for a long
time

Hate to break it to ya Kokiri, but both Quinch and I saw the same thing in
that post, and the last time I checked, that 2-pixel-thick dark-gold
horizontal bar at the bottom was a sign of HTMLing.

Oh, and Alex, in case you haven't figured it out yet, this is the kind of
stuff that posting in HTML can cause, although normally all the yelling's
directed at the person who posted it..so if you don't mind, think you could
settle for just a white background and black text and nothing else? Thanks.

No link shows up on my screen; just black background, white text, and a line
at the bottom. Oh, and a little paperclip signifying an attachment. Plus
looking at the message source indicates X-WebTV-Signature and
X-WebTV-Stationery. Even if it isn't technically HTML, it's equally
annoying, especially since, looking at my options menu, there doesn't appear
to be a way to turn it off.

Okay, prepare yourself for a rare sight:
I was wrong... kind of. There was one HTML tag in his sig. I maintain
that this is not the same as posting in HTML. The real problem w/
posting in HTML is including images and having illegible posts because of
the tags within it.

I also maintain my original opinion regarding everyone's dubious

I liked the Blackjack music better. The falcon music wasn't bad, but it was
used too much. Why was it played as the airship *and* world map music? Too
much of a good tune tends to ruin the effect.

She? I thought gender was indeterminate? Gogo's character description seemed
to indicate this.

I don't think you did ... I seem to recall Gogo's blurb had something in it
about "Is it a man? Is it a woman? Or should we even ask?"
And unless the revealing bit got left out of the US version, that's where it
stands.

I mean it was really short in the time it takes to complete disk
one.But that's understandable with the introduction scene, the dancing
scene and the parade scene. All that computer animation must take up
space.Maybe with the playtstation 2 they'll use digital video disks so
what fits into 4 cd's could fit into 1 cd or use the extra space to make
the games beyond anything we've ever seen.I'm at the part where they are
about to enter the missile base on disk 2.I understanding the game play
much better now.I almost know exactly what i'm doing when equiping the
characters.I pretty much understand the card game it's soooo easy.
By the way,i noticed some people complaining about html.I have no idea

Yep, looks fine now! Sorry 'bout all the griping, it's just that some people
have newsreaders that can't read HTML, so instead they get all the tags and
crap.....looks like a real garbled mess then.

But... the plot consists of 'oh, we can't get into any towns, because
the
birth of the creature that controls the powers of armaggedon is
imminent.
Let's go run into that box, and fight it till it dies.'.
Or something closely related to that.
I don't believe much gets done in the entire disk.

Then again, I may have my disc/event division wrong.
It has been known to happen.

Good point, but when I used Zsnes I tended to speed the game up when on the

ff5 is great
Apart from the Ship's Graveyard with the transparency thing, my
emulator was supposed to support transparancy but it didn't work when
I needed it :-(

Aye. Caused a small amount of strife for a while.
But it's all good.
I never did get to beat omega though.
I lost all my save files and states from the game, and there
was no way I was going to play it again just to beat omega.
not til next year.

I never really used red mages for long. I might try them more next time I
play it.

The first time I played this game, I screwed up by spreading over too many
jobs, and not levelling up enough. On the second play through I got the
system figured out though.

My game plan is usually this:

All characters master whitemage and monk. 30% extra HP certainly goes a long
way in the final battle, and healing is essential (oh, and *shell* ensures
no problems from that nasty Almagest attack)

One character masters summon. Conjure is damn useful, costing no mp, and
phoenix can be a lifesaver...

Another character masters both blackmage and Dragoon. All that meteo and
flare casting costs lots of MP, and the DragonSwd skill is guaranteed to
steal both MP and HP from an enemy.

After that I just choose a few other jobs depending on what I feel like
using.

Great fun, this job system. It brings great replayability to the game.

Bastard, isn't it.
I fought him 3 times, and died in the typical under one minute
fashion. So I went and finished the game. But I was playing at
school, and all my files there have been deleted now. Which is
to be expected.

It's a shame that Gogo was never involved much in the plot, really.

why do you say using heroes is cheating for beating omega weapon?...to beat
omega weapon you have to use holy wars his moves take off all of your power
the only other chance is to hope pheonix brings you back...well you could
possibly use the selphie limit skill "ultimate end" or whatever it's
called, but chances in gettting that to happen before he kills you is like
none, and well even using holy wars keeps omega weapon quite a challenge,
and a great feat if you beat 'em...hehe

#1: You don't need Holy Wars. Period. IMO, whoever put them in the game
should be shot.
#2: If his attacks are damaging you too much, you haven't junctioned
properly.
#3: Or Alexander's Revive, or Life spells, or Full-Life spells ...
#4: If you're invincible to everything, *nothing* is a challenge.
