Not too long ago, I began a thread that challenged veterans of the FF series
to find the nostalgia buried within FF 9. Few responded. Those that did
came up with some interesting stuff.

Here's what I found as far as I've played:

FF1: 5 bosses make a not-so-triumphant return. Garland, Tiamat, Lich,
Maliris, and Kraken are those 5.
FF2: Nothing yet...unless somebody knows FF2 by heart.
FF3: Doga's Artifact, Une's Mirror (rare auction items), Invincible
(airship) , Une's Theme (track)
Doga and Une were the amcient guardians of FF3's Sylx Tower and Forbidden
Land Eureka, and were among many "fifth men" assisting the young Light
Warriors in their quest to stop Salamander from engulfing the world in
darkness. Une's Theme was remastered in FF9. As for the Invincible, it was
your best airship in FF3...a flying fortress!.
FF4/2e: Rat Tail (rare auction item) , Kain's Lance (spear), Asura's Rod,
(rod), Airship (card), Namingway (card), the Dwarves of Conde Petie
You had to give a Rat Tail to the ore miner northwest of Silvera to get
Adamant for the Excalibur sword
The description and name of Freya's second-best spear refers to Kain, the
most famous Dragon Knight in FF history.
Asura was the multi-faced demoness that, when summoned, cast white magic on
the party.
The image on Tetra Master Card #100 is the Enterprise, your FF4 party's
first airship.
If I need to explain the Namingway, somebody's gonna get hurt!
The Dwarves make their re-entry after a long 8-year absence. And they
wouldn't be true FF dwarves without their signature "Rally-ho" salute!
FF5: Excalibur II side-quest dialogue mentions something about Excalipoor.
Gilgamesh also returns
Atomos got its start here as a boss in World 2's Barrier Tower. That thing
LOVED the Comet spell to death!
Excalipoor was Gilgamesh's botched attempt at cloning the holy Excalibur
FF6: Auctiom House (event) Doomsday (spell), Locke (NPC), Shock (skill)
You can once again get reasonably good stuff at auction, albeit at a hefty
price. Doomsday operates much like the Crusader summon---nobody is spared
from damage.
Locke was the male lead in FF6, Need I say more?
Leo could cause massive damage using Shock. So could Gau provided he mimed
a Retainer
FF7: A reference to Cloud's sword im Lindblum's weapon shop. I can't tell
which sword Zidane's eyeballing.
The Trance system takes its cues from here.
The Ckimhazzard skill was Cloud's L2/2 limit
FF8: Diablos permitted the use of "Darkside". A Forbidden high enough in
level could knock you out with "Iai Strike"
FF 7+8: "No cloud or squall shall hinder us"

Now, you wouldn't get credit if you found this:
FF 1, 3, 5, FFT: The black mages in FF9, friend or foe, look as they did in
these prequels/offshoots.

Although I wonder which is more accurate: Kary, or Maliris. Certainly Kary
was a significantly greater pain ...
Although minor nit-pick: Crusader was non-elemental, and thus damage was
unavoidable. Doomsday does Shadow damage; with equipping the right
accessories, it can do massive damage to enemies and heal your entire party.

As well as the White Mage robe Garnet wears in some of the early happenings.

One other one that I saw with regards to weapons. Beatrix's sword, Save the
Queen, shared the same name as Quistis's most powerful whip. A rather
interesting metamorphosis, that.

- The volcano music in FF9 is also taken from FF1.

- The last stretch of the boss' lair plays the same variation on the
crystal theme that was used in the last stretch of the boss' lair in FF3.

- I think the entire slew of "?!" cards at the end of the deck are FF4
references, including "Twin Moons".

There was a sword in FFT called Save the Queen too. It's been there and
back again. :)

Feh. In my day, mortals remained so and knew their place... now
everybody and their mother has the disease of eternal boredom.

*beats head on keyboard*
Same theme as they played in the Earth Cave, wasn't it? Can't remember if
they used it in Gurgu Volcano as well ...

O' course. An' ah sold the Rat Tail, Une's Mirror, Doga's Artifact, an' the
Griffin's Heart fer the Magical Fingertip. It kin be done easily. The Magical
Fingertip cost me 54,300 gil at auction an' ah then bought back ma Doga's
Artifact, Une's Mirror, the Griffin's Heart, an' the Rat Tail with 646,281 gil
left. An' that after buying all the good loot from Daguerreo tae boot!

An' now fer more FF nostaligia. Ah finally got the Mini-Brahne from the
Mayor's House in Dali an it says:

Actually I fairly certain the airship on card #100(?) was from FF1. I'll
have to go check...

BTW, I been away for a while, how has everyone been?
