What's the best magician race in all, and which is the best out of: dwarf,
high elf, wood elf, and gnome? Thanks

By performing nonsensical calculations involving the prime stats for a
mage, the performance of each race, the number of each race and class
per server and the number of eggs consumed in the American household
each year, I think it comes down to Erudite. :) Between those you list,
using the same criteria, it would be a gnome. But what do you want to
play? What race tickles your fancy, as it were? (mmm, barbarian
women... sorry :)) Play what you visualize your character as. Are you a
reclusive Erudite, tucked away behind your tomes and venturing out only
to gather knowledge to increase your power or perhaps a carefree, bold
and highly attractive Wood Elf (mmm, wood elf women... sorry :)) who
wanders the land assisting others with your magic talents and taking
things in stride? I figure, if you're going to work through 50 levels
and an entire planet with one person, you'd better like them. :) Ah,
just make the Erudite or Gnome powermage, you probably will anyway. :/
But, if you actually make a character and happen to drop by Fennin Ro,
come say hi. :)

Dwarves and Wood Elves cannot BECOME mages....
And out of the HiE/Gnome selection I would pick gnome. Not because of a
dramatic difference...just because they look SO different. Gnomes stand out.
Gnomes are 'cute'. Gnomes get gifts from Player Characers. You decide.

Seriously, any race can make a damn good magician, for one reason.
Unlike with the other pure casters, INT is not soo soo vital for us.
110 to 115 is just fine. The reason is, if we're playing well,
especially in a group, we don't have to burn all that much. Our pets
are our burn, and most of our buffs (our summonings) last forever. As
such, if you want to just get all your stats "optimised", play a gnome
- we don't need str, charisma is nice for prices, but we can live with
ugliness =), and stamina really isn't that hugely important (despite
appearing as a prime requisite in character creation) and dex and agil
are useful for avoiding interruptions. Ultimately though, it really
doesn't make all that big a difference. The best kept secret in this
game is that how good your character is, is <10% stats, and 90%+ how
you play it. Play the race you want to play, the one you think looks
best, the one you think is right for a character persona you have in
mind, the one which has the best newbie zone, whatever turns you on.
Have fun.

I do not think there is a good magician race. Pets are horrible in the
dungon. the burn spells come every other level leading to pain in between.
The misc spells suck except the damage shields. Pick another class. I have a
16th level magician, he makes a great scout. He has been naked and used to
scout (and die ) for 2 months now. One day I expect him to make level 12 due
to scouting death.

I love the gnome town, they have the mechanized guides that lead you
wherever you wanna go. Can't beat that.

I've made it to 24th, in dungeons and out of dungeons and am quite
pleased with the magician class. Some people are not cut out for some
classes. I make a horrible wizard... but I like to think I'm a rather
effective magician.

Yup, mages sure do suck. Fluffy and I especially suck when we're soloing
yellows. We suck even more when we do the most damage of any character in the
party (well, characters really). My friendly Troll warrior who doesn't take
exps or loot sucks too. A party of 4 (8) of us + a cleric and enchanter is the
suckiest party in the game. Suckity suck suck suck. La la la la la.

p.s. ever heard of /pet back off? How bout /pet get lost? /Pet guard here?
How bout Invisibility? Magicians *are* quite challenging to play, but
*sucky*? You may enjoy the subtleties of the monk.

You forgot about all our sucky summoning spells. Who needs food and water when
out in the wilderness? And as for ultravision range-equipable necklaces? Well,
there's just not enough nuance to the word 'suck' to convey how
transcedentally sucky *that* is. The wizard in my party who had such an item
bestowed upon him was stricken nearly dumb with the suckiness of being able to
see at night. He thought heat sight was sucky - well, it isn't even on the map
of suck.

It's lucky that sucky classes like magicians and enchanters work so - well,
suckily - together. We don't have to bother the rest of the player population
with our innate suckingness.

Oh the humanity!

Meeke is back? Hurrah! One more sucky magician in the world. Soon we will be

Wow. Considering how potent magicians are at level 16 (I have one myself) I
am stunned. Flabbergasted. Levels 12-15 were a bitch (yet I was still
effective), but level 16?? Don't take this the wrong way, but if you can't
find a way to be effective at level 16, you just don't know how to play a
magician.

I'm inclined to agree with Jeff. Level 16 is where Magicians *really* start to
become a force to be reckoned with. I was eating light reds alive at 16. It
was probably my single *most* effective level ever. If you can't be effective
at 16, it's not the Magician that's broken, it's you. My pet was so good at
level 16, I was eating yellow fire elems alive without the benefit of my new 91
point DD spell even(resistance doncha know). Magicians kick *serious* ass at
16, and continue to do so all the way up.

Yeah, those in between levels hurt sometimes, but they *never* hurt enough to
make you ineffective. I've been through the DD lag at level 12, and level 29
too. I'm at 33 now, the worst place I could be for the 29 DD lag, and I'm
*still* beating the hell out of everything I come across in Unrest. I could
solo the level 35 Ghost with one hand behind my back. That's a high yellow. If
you can't be effective with a Magician, you don't know how to play one. I know
that sounds condescending, and demeaning, but really..95% of the Magicians I've
ever talked to *love* their class, and think Magicians are incredible. Almost
everyone I've ever grouped with has come away from the experience *loving*
Magicians, even some of them in dungeons. You just can't do *too* much moving
around without keeping a careful eye on your pet. *Don't* let it chase runners
in dangerous areas. You need to think for two. Playing a Magician is different
from playing a Ranger, you don't just hit "A" and go make coffee.

In groups we DD as effectively as Wizards (you have to slow down your casting
anyway, so slower casting speed is irrelevant), and we Tank as well as any Monk,
or Ranger with our pet. We do it all for the price of 1 party member, not 2.

I really find it hard to come up with legitimate complaints about the Magician,
with the exception of the understandably difficult pathing problem. Some
workarounds to make this less of an issue would be welcome additions (such as a
recall pet spell or something to summon it back to your feet).

Maybe your tactics are what's wrong with your magician, David. Magicians aren't
Rangers, don't play them like one. If you must play it like one, don't complain
when you die. It was your own poor judgement.

I didn't even have a problem at 12-15 either. Wisps are a breeze at 12-15, and
still great exp, and fantastic money. Ok, 15 was sorta tough after I moved to
Lavastorm, and my pet was getting a little outdated, but I still made it past 15
in one evening. It was tougher than I was used to, but still easier than most
other classes.

As for the original question, I'm an Erudite Magician, and loving it. Dark
Elves make good magicians, but there are some spells that you won't be able to
get without going to Ak'anon, or Erudin, where you're probably KoS. I'd stick
with either a High Elf, or an Erudite. Either is perfectly capable.

Amen, The Magicians do rule. I have tried just about ever class/race
combination in Everquest and the Erudite/Magician was one of my favorites.
The only real problem I had with them was in dungeons, especially BB. The
pet would get stuck so often he was basically worthless. But I learned to
work around it. In groups everyone always hated it when I had to leave. I
could usually dish out the most damage of anyone when it was needed.
Hitting a Scythe Beetle with a staff, pet, rain, DD, and fire shield spells
all at the same time would take them down pretty quickly.
