Perhaps a wizard (IMHO easy because of just using spells, and thats it)
Or a druid (IMHO girls like treehugging hippies, so a woodelf dr00d would
be fine :-) )
Or even a cleric, just let her concentrate on healing others, and hiking
along for the XP, and getting to know the game)
Hope this helps (a bit),

Play more than one - make sure its one with a good newbie yard - dont play
in Kelethin the awkwardness of the platforms is enough to put off a
computer game newbie when combined with a EQ newbie
For specific selection the first character needs a balance of her choice
and your guidance - dont push one class her way. If its a bad choice
phrase it as its not going to work long term (after all lvl 1-5 is pretty
similar an experience).
Class I imagine work well -
Cleric - less downtime and so you get action. Plus the chance to interact
with others. Has the longest term prospects too.
Ranger - a decent soloist and somethig you can go play on your own if you
want
Shaman - Always one I think works well for 20 levels or so combining
spells and combat but not hugely reliant on either.
SK - for those who like the darker side of life - for much the same
reasons as the ranger. When you hit level 9 both those classes become
interesting - but Im sugesting a trot through levels 1-5 to start.
Monk - One of the easiest to explain to a non fantasy oriented person
I think. Some abilties to work up and they come in at a rate that allows
you to guide them through the whole hotkey and ability use options without
the mess and expense of spells.
Ones I would stay well clear of are
Warrior - for a newbie I think the monk works better as an intro very
early on, its got the perception to a newbie of being one dimensional and
if stuck too generally requires non occaisional players.
Bard - RSI - need I say more, its horribly complex to explain, it
difficult to play.
Rogue - Nothing it does really intros you to the game as well or as
quickly as the classes above and the skills just take a while to generate
a use (IMO). Good class but not an intro class.
As to the others, the pure int casters, the pally and the druid - there
are others with a better flavour to show what that class does in the short
term introduction so Id suggest the others unless one of those
particularly appeals to the newbie in question in that case go with it.
Once you get beyond having tried a couple of ideas then its free for all
on whatever has appealed in play so far.
Race can either be the major or the minor concern. If its the major (ie I
wanna play that) then you simply suggrst classes within that restriction).
If its minor pick the class and go with the best newbie yard of the class.
Generally avoid Iksar Id say, and possibly nightblinds as well.

Well, I don't have the experience some of these others do, but you ought to
be thinking in terms of both of your characters and picking two that work
together well. Don't be surprised if she wants to play a more aggressive
character. I've seen some REALLY aggressive female warriors in the game.
Though I mostly so, I teamed with one for about a week in Crushbone.
Cheers,

I agree here. Pick something that complements your character if he is
already established, if not or if you arent attached to it, start over
with her and show her the ropes first hand.

I've brought alot of friends into this game. Some have enjoyed it, some
have not, but regardless I always suggest a melee type.
I started a warrior first. A big ugly ogre to be exact. I took him to 23
levels before starting my next character and in that 23 levels I learned a
lifetime worth of 'donts' that the support classes tend to do. Being a
warrior broke me of any bad habits I could have had before I even started my
other characters. Its been often commented on (just an example) how nice it
is that my cleric / wizard / necro does not run but trusts in the tanks to
get the mob off me.
Its just a suggestion and she's got an advantage that alot of us didn't have
starting out. She's got you to help her with whatever class she chooses.
Let her pick her own class and race, she's got a brain!
If you want to help, make sure she has a good newbie area to do the first few
levels in, I suggest Freeport or Qeynos. Wide open and hard for a mob to sneak
up on you.
And a fine steel sword and a leather tunic wouldn't hurt either.

Keep her playing a variety of classes, until she finds what she likes.
Make sure she can group in your groups, even if you have to start a new
toon to level up to group with her. My wife tried ranger and druid,
then found she loves playing a wizard. Unfortunately she has trouble
finding a group at times, but she loves the big boom!
Also consider trade skills. I can't stand 'em but my wife does almost
all of them.
Oh, and one other word from the voice of experience. Abandoning her
level 17 ranger in some remote zone because you want to go raid
somewhere is a big faction hit. The family that plays together stays
together.
Women seem to gravitate towards the casting classes. I've known women
that were very happy as clerics, wizards or druids. I guess it's the
"helping others" motif with those classes (clerics with rez/heal, wiz and
druids with ports).

Heh. Got a good laugh out of this. Thanks.
Bards tank worse than rangers, maybe slightly better than rogues. You
can heal, but at an astoundingly slow rate. So as long as you can put
battles on pause for 5 minutes while the MT sits down and you play your
song, you guys make _great_ healers!
You guys are VERY good for very short term buffs, but you can't do huge
healing or damage all at once and your stuff doesn't last for longer than
a few minutes at best after you've switched songs.
That said, one of my favorite people to have around is a good bard. You
didn't even mention a couple of the things they're incredibly good at:
buffs (melee, haste, resists) and crowd control. Not to mention selo's
rocks my world. I do have a screenshot of a lvl 62 Bard asking me for
SoW though *grin*.
PS: stfu and play the heart song, damnit.

What you said may be true for a high level bard but in the below 30's what I
said is quite applicable.
This was a newbie question thread after all.
True our heal is more like a group regen, but it works well and is quite
often underestimate by others.
Um, Quite agree with you though...... NO IDEA why a level 62 bard would
want SoW unless he was too busy twisting other songs to put Selo's into
it.....

I have this vision of a newbie bard with Selo's soaring off the edge of
the Kelethin platform... how far out would the corpse be?
I'm sure that *never* happens though. :-)
...Ronny
Bards like SoW because
- it lasts longer (one less song to twist) - particularly useful when
heading indoors
- No chance of dropped notes (not as big a deal with the later songs,
but still a factor)
and perhaps most importantly...
- It's slower than Selo's.
Having it slower than Selo's is important because chant kiting (kiting
in general, really) requires that you stay in range of the MOBs. With
Selo's (and the higher-level running songs) you're over the horizon
before you can blink.
Somebody who actually plays a bard may want to expand on or correct this.

This is why he asked for it ;) Still thought it was funny ;)
Bard and cleric make a good team. Add a warrior in and you have an
awesome group for everything except raids.
Druid of course .. halfing preferably o)

This to go with base jumping the Hole? :)
With pop this is even easier - make a dwarf

to PoK, Down to Tox, down the tunnel and your
set :)
It seems that way to start. My other half started to play now I can't
get her off. She's 11 levels ahead of me and rubbing it in big time!
It's gotten so bad I am considering buying another PC and copy of EQ
just so I can play!

Do that. My life with Lenny has gotten ALOT better when we
got our own computers. Then you can start duoing with her, as
well. Lots of fun, if you both remember its just a game. ("Hey,
sweetie... you... in the mood?" "After that overpull of yours and
_that_ CR? STFU, noob!")
A real simple combo to try is cleric and warrior. Very very
simple for the most part... cleric throws heals and buffs,
warrior beats on stuff. Other combo's might offer more in terms
of power and flexibility, but this one is a classic for a reason.

It's NOT just a game, dammit! Just the other night my BF and I were playing
and he looted a charm. A charm with wisdom and agility. It looked like a pile
of sand or something. He looted before he looked. He has a million excuses.
He's a wizard, pretty useless for him. I'm a ranger. Do you have any idea how
long this man is going to do without? :)

I started playing with my boyfriend almost 4 years ago now, just after
EQ came out. I started a druid got her to 50 (back in the old days),
and have since played a cleric to 60, a warrior to 60, necromancer to 59
and a monk to 27. For a newbie girl, any non pet class would be ok,
just make sure she reads up about her spells/abilities, and most of all
.... be patient with her!! :)
Dont worry that shes not good at computer games, EQ was my first
computer game, now I play just about everything AND I'm better than the
b/f at most games :) (he really hates that)
Everquest has been alot of fun for both of us. And for all you moaning
women out there.... If you cant beat em, join em I say!!
