Hello,

I'm on FiVie (RP Server) and I'm interested in knowing where the best
place to join a language class is. I guess it'd be somewhere in PoK,
but where exactly, and do people show up there regularly? I'm in need
of some language skills.

Thanks,

-Chuck. (www.wormspeaker.com)

Is FV the only server that makes use of language skills?

Doesn't that presuppose you already know someone whos mastered the
language in question.

I thought it was still very tedious to bootstrap your way up.

There used to be language specific books... are these all gone now? Is
there no in-game use for languages now at all?

All you need is one point, 2 people in a group and spam/chat backwards and
forwards

I hear shouts in PoK at times for language lessons. Go there and shout
that you need to learn Elvish, that's the most used language on the
server for trades and shouts. It's the common language of the server
by popular demand.

With FV there is no common language. Just the racial languages and
thieves cant. With the other servers (not sure about any of the PvP
servers) there is a common language that everyone knows.

The time to master a language is dependant on wis or int, which ever
is highest. I've tried to learn it with low wis on a BL and it was
very slow to skill up but it started to go much faster once I got my
wis to 187.

Hmmm... they must have changed it since I last bootstrapped languages
then. You used to have to zone after each skillup when you reached
your groupmates max+1 before you could advance it again. But I haven't
worked languages since just before Kunark came out... =)

Thanks. I got in on a large group of people who were trading
languages.

Thought that was just a display error, ie, your skill would go up but the
improvements didn't show until you zoned.

Its possible. It was a long time ago... seems like an odd display
issue though... you'd only see skillups until you reached someone
elses maximum +1?? Course this is SOE...

It occurs to me that languages could have a use. Say I am a human with
very high language skills in the Iksar language. That would indicate
plenty of time spent in their company. If there was some base level
value that would multiply with your language level, then stack with your
faction standing vs that race, languages would have a use on all
servers, although very minor.

And 6 minutes after that patch went live everyone would have maxed
their langues.

Its a good idea... maybe one for EQ2... but EQ1 is too messed up to
make them really relevant now.

wow chuck, this really sucks. you've got about eleven or twelve posts and
only one or two that really answer your question...anyway, languages are
important on the RP server because most people only start out with one or
maybe two languages mastered. i find, however, that if you see someone who
is a race that speaks a language you do not know yet, they are usually
willing to help you out. you can usually just talk to them in elvish to
start out, but if they don't speak that try sending a tell. i forget if it
is ;tell or :tell, but i'm sure someone will post it later...anyway the
;tell/:tell works better than the /tell because they will understand you no
matter what language you speak. for instance, i met a dwarf before i spoke
anything (except dark elvish) and we had to communicate with the ;tell for a
while until he taught me elvish. hope that helps...

It's ;tell and it works because it's a tell that also works between
servers. It doesn't go through the language filters.

Chat channels also work. When I first started a DE char on FV and did not
know any other languages, I would emote /em wants you to join ChatChannel.
We would just talk there and spam languages in group speak.
