thanks
1). you shouldn't start smithing with a warrior, they are too dumb, use a
char with higher int. for any trade skills unless you have a lot of plat to
burn
2). there is no money in smithing anymore, you will save hundreds of plat
just buying your banded from someone else, even with the new smithing
improvements coming, there are hundreds of master smiths out there that will
be ready...
3.) the closest place to you that makes sense to smith is Freeport, as they
sell ore and have forges there. highkeep sells ore, but they have no forges.
4). no NPC's sell studs or steel boneing, you have to make them yourself or
buy from a player.
5). you need sharpening stones to sharpen weapons, also available in
highkeep and Freeport.
At level 7, you probably don't want to start any trade skills just yet.
Wait until you're 15 or so. But if you really want to...
There are no merchants that sell studs or boning or whatever for leather
armor. You will not be able to make that stuff immediately anyway. You
will have to raise your skill first.
There is no source of ore or smithing supplies in Halas (except I think
large molds for banded armor).
The nearest source is Erudin, which means you'll have to get through
Blackburrow, run across Qeynos Hills to Qeynos, and take the boat to Erudin.
The best way to get your smithing skill up is to sharpen rusty weapons.
Pick up 3 or 4 stacks of sharpening stones, and sharpen any rusty weapons
you get. One stone + one rusty = tarnished weapon. Then sell the tarnished
weapon. This will get your skill up to (I think) 21 without spending any
practices.
After that, you'll have to start making useless items and selling them to
the merchant to get your skill up, and for that, you WILL have to relocate
to either Highpass or Freeport.

Scientist who fall in acid get absorbed in work.
I would recommend buying about 200 sharpening stones. It will cost you 4cp
each stone...(total cost: 8gp). I got my smithing up to (31) by sharpening
weapons, though the higher you get, the bigger the weapon you need to work
on to get skill from it. At (31), even 2 handed swords become trivial (you
can't gain skill points from it anymore). Then it's time to buy ore and
start making stuff, and burning your money away.
Note that being a Barbarian Warrior smith sounds like fun roleplay, but it
is extra work for a couple of reasons. 1) You have to go to Erudin for your
basic materials. Prices will be higher 'cause they don't like you a whole
lot. 2) As a Barb Warrior, your Int and Wis scores should be low, which
means you will have to work longer to get skill points in the craft. That
means it will cost you more to achieve the same level of skill as, say, an
Elf or an Erudian. If you REALLY want to be a Barbarian smithy, things will
go faster and cheaper as a Shaman (higher Wis and Ch).
