But my guild mates aren't AOE'ers, and I haven't
gotten an invite to an AOE group since.
I've always said the best way to get a group is to
form one yourself, instead of laying around LFG.
This being the case, and AOE being such a powerful
strategy, I figure I need to learn about AOE. This
way, I can form up AOE groups on my own. Sure,
the first few times they will be a screwup, but I'll
get experience at leading them and then all will be
good. In the meantime I'll make a point of recruiting
friends who will understand that its a learning exercise.
OK, so, whats needed here?
I -think- its
2 enchanters
1 cleric
2 PB AOE nukers
1 puller.
The puller brings wave after wave of mobs to the group
The chanters stand together and spam out AOE Mez
The cleric keeps the chanters alive
Once sufficient groups are present, the nukers
start blowing mana on PB AOE while the chanters keep
spamming Mez and the cleric spams groupheals or does
his own PB AOEing.
Cleric is critical to the endeavor not just because of group
heals, but more importantly because when something
goes wrong it usually means total group wipe, so that 96%
rez is crucial to keeping failure from being all that expensive
Puller; bard probably best here, since the plan involves
total expenditure of mana, the bard can reduce down time
by singing manasong. On the other hand, puller also can
use high HP and AC and disciplines like Defensive or
spells like Divine Aura... so possibly Warriors or Paladins
(and heck for some reason I can't think of SK?) might also
make good pullers. Key ability would be to run fast (a SOW
outside would probably work for every puller if convenient, or
puller must have Run 3)
Chanters are key because you need to be able to mez 50 mobs
at a time, necro and bard mez are limited target counts and won't
work here. You need two because you really really can't afford
to have any mobs not mezed for any length of time, one chanter
leaves perhaps 10% of them unmezzed which is too much for the
cleric to keep the chanter alive thru (five mobs beating down the
chanter, not good)
This leaves the actual damage producers to the remaining two
people. I see a lot of people saying that Wizards are needed here.
However, I see PB AOE on druids and clerics... what exactly
do wizards bring to the party that druids and clerics don't? Looks
to me like having a druid there would be handy as you'd have
easy access to SOW (just step outside and cast it) and some extra
help keeping the chanters alive while setting up. Also seems to me
a second cleric could be useful here, again more healing capability,
and significantly higher life span when the S**t hits the fan...
Party: bard chanter chanter cleric cleric druid
Oddly this would be a lot easier for me to assemble than
Party: bard chanter chanter cleric wizzard wizzard
Hmm what else. Levels. OK, so one cleric needs to be level
56 plus cause as I pointed out the best rez you can get is going
to help with the several deaths per night (particularly while
learning how to do this)
Puller needs to be as high level as you can get for the more
HP and AC and resists. Pullers only real job requirement is
the ability to live long while bringing in mobs fast. If its a bard,
then you want the best mana song you can get. But all in all,
level doesn't seem to be crucial here, knowledge of the area,
good running reflexes and the ability to laugh at death seem
more important
Chanters... do they get better AOE mez at some high level?
Is it required? Since AOE group seems to work on levels
down near the low end of the Blue scale (so that the AOEs
are enough damage to kill each mob despite their relatively
low damage per mob per mana output) I don't imagine
resists are all that big a deal should one of the chanters be
slightly lower level.
Nukers. What nukes are being used here? Do they scale
up all that much by level? Really really high Mana levels will
help in as much as it seems they have to burn all mana out
in order for their AOEs to get all the mobs to the point of death.
Spells I'm familiar with that work on this principle are Earthquake,
Upheaval, and some of the Word series. Clerics get the good ones
of those at levels under 56 (can't think exactly when) although there
is a third that also operates as a stun which is very fast cast up at
56 or so. Still, -not- requiring 60 cleric if you are using him as
one of your nukers.
Druids also get those spells, afaik, in the lower end of the 50s.
I can easily scare up a 58 druid (in fact unless convinced that
a druid -can't- sub for a wizard in this will almost certainly have
her in most of my groups for personal reasons) is there any
reason this would be inadequate?
I am not familiar with the wizard PB AOE lines at all, is there
a minimum level at which they are useful for this?
What about mages, seems to me I recall them getting a similar
line which struck me as useless at the time. What would
prevent them from joining in here as an AOE nuker, do their
lines suck in some way? Heck, seems to me they could even
make pets, now that they don't aggro on mezed mobs, you'd
have a little more protection for your nukers on the few mobs
which escape or break mez.
Where to go to do this? The one place I've done it was in
Chardok, right under the tunnel entrance. Puller brought in
from entrance, exit, tunnel, castle, and down to Observer.
I've seen AOE groups working in Sebelis, and heard that they
operate in HS as well. Anywhere else? How about a nice
spot to get the plan down, perhaps Blackburrow? Mistmoore?
Help me out here, I really had some fun the one time I did this,
and anyway half the exp I've accrued in all the time I've been
59 came from that one three hour session. Starting to get the
itch to work up to 60 finally (really burned out pushing to 59)
and I'd like to do it in a new and exciting way.

ps if there's an experienced AOE group on MT in need of
a cleric, you could invite me along, I understand its far from
simple to explain sex to a virgin, and why bother if there's a
perfectly good bed handy?
you say 2 enchanters, both mezing (obviously buffs / debuffs aren't the
issue)
but do you mean mezing ? in AOE groups my enchanter has joined, i would
rarely mez- i was ALWAYS stun
a 49 enchanter, using all available AOE stun spells, can keep all PB mobs
stunned indefinitely, if he times his spells correctly
at 52, we get another stun (such that even a chimp could keep mobs
permanantly stunned), and then as levels go up our resist rates drop
^ i say that because you made it seem like you're describing a 55+ aoe group
doing lvl 45-50 mobs, so it should hold true
i have never died in aoe group participation, though obviously not many have
as much aoe group "stick time" as straight exp groups, and i haven't had the
luxury of aoe grouping w/ another enchanter
*thus* i'm guessing you either meant to say that your aoe group setup would
have more than 10 mobs, and the ones that wouldn't "fit" in spell range
would have to be mez'd, OR you meant that if enchanters chain-cast aoe mez,
that the mobs will hold still well enough?
2 enchanters casting constant aoe stuns could more than handle those mobs,
keeping them permanantly stunned, and that would be the smartest way to run
your aoe group
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
now leave the 2 enchanters in the middle of the battle, because they'll be
fine
i'm going to say YES to the druids - you could use druid power . . they
would stand outside the PB for most spells, but they're substantial as aoe
nukers and much more common than, say, a mage at lvls 55+
having mages would be fun, but it would have to be a 55+ one, IMO . . . but
really, as far as i can say, there should never ever be a tank in an aoe
group, thus the pet would be worthless when things were going well, so don't
sweat the mage
anyway, this sounds like quite the strategy, and i wish you well
i'd like to hear how your plans play out
hopes no mages summon him to show off their nuking power, and hopes for
other flaming even less
The AE groups I've been in have been:
1 cleric.
2 enchanters.
3 wizards.
Enchanters use their "color" stun lines, NOT the AE mez. Mez takes too long
to cast, uses too much mana, and will be broken by the first AE nuke. Keep
3 of the stuns up, and just chain cast, keeping all the mobs stunned. You
need 2 enchanters so that they can cover each other's resists.
The wizards nuke. An epic-equipped wizard also pulls.
The cleric heals.
Welcome to Usenet. First a few questions:
Do you have an inferiority complex?
Do you feel that people persecute you? Are you an idiot?
Can you stand your ground without sounding helpless?
Pretty much. I usually prefer 3 enchanters, 1 cleric, two wizards (one
of which pulls), but I'm a cleric and I think of any deaths as failures on
my part. Even if I am surrounded by 70 mobs and healing people wearing
tissue paper for armour.
Replace "mez" with "stun" and you've got it. The AoE stuns are pretty
low mana, BTW, so that ENC spam can last a long time if you need it to.
> Cleric is critical to the endeavor not just because of group
> heals,
I don't group heal much. It's mostly single-target stuff, like CE on
enchanters before the mobs arrive, or a spell to top up the puller before he
goes for more.
> but more importantly because when something
> goes wrong it usually means total group wipe, so that 96%
The cleric is also a damage source. The Unspoken Word is very fast
casting and efficient, and Upheaval isn't that bad a PBAoE (although it
pales to Jyll's X). I usually can heal a few folks, and drop two Upheavals
and an Unspoken Word per pull, and match mana expenditure with the others in
the group. That's all the healing covered and 2 K damage per mob - not a bad
contribution!
> Party: bard chanter chanter cleric cleric druid
You'll have to play around and see if the extra mana expenditure for
inefficient Upheaval matches the mana regen from the bard - I strongly
suspect it doesn't. The bard is nice to have around in case there's
stragglers at the end, though. We usually have up ENC pets for the same
reason, or if the mobs don't dispel have dire charmed pets.
> Oddly this would be a lot easier for me to assemble than
> Party: bard chanter chanter cleric wizzard wizzard
Don't be afraid to let a wizard pull. The insta-cast on a TFlux staff
means they can tag on the run, and the rune effect on the wizard epic means
they're tougher than they look (and cost you less mana to heal). In tough
places, like Acrylia pre-nerf, we had a warrior with the Rampage AA ability
and Earthshaker (procs Earthquake) go pull - he could take all the harm
touches and nukes, and provided a way of dispatching stragglers without
using mana and creating more downtime.
> Nukers. What nukes are being used here? Do they scale
PBAoE's. When you have wizards, you're using the Jyll's line of PBAoE's.
Clerics and druids can chip in Upheaval, and mages cast Scintillation. What
kills folks is resists - if a small group of mobs get multiple resists, you
have a big problem to deal with.
Try comparing what your druid friend can do in damage chain-casting
Upheaval until OOM with what a wizard can do chain-casting Jyll's. There's a
fair efficiency gap there IIRC.
Fungus Grove. I would be surprised if your server didn't have a Fungus
Grove AoE group working 24/7. Standing right at the safe spot beside the
pond, pulling every mushroom patch, bandit camp, and dreg they can get their
hands on (and the odd underbulk when they get bored). Mistmoore would be a
nice place to practice for Sebilis, since you'd get a lot of casters in a
Mistmoore pull (and you'd get a ton of mobs with ease).
One tip...AoE mez will get you dead enchanters
quick. The first AoE or PBAoE to hit the mez'd group
of mobs will wake them all up and have them all pound
on the guy who mez'd 'em.
You mean AoE stun...longer lasting the better.
Nice, but still slow for an AE group. I'm not going to tell you
ones that most folks use.
Yep, pretty much right on, though I've certainly done it with a single
enchanter with very good results.
I've rarely done it this way, just because I hate having to run and
aggro a bunch of mobs, bring them back, aggro more, etc. I prefer to
have my entire group put me on auto-follow and I rush around aggroing
mobs willy-nilly until I have a HUGE group behind us. The 4-mob limit
can be a real pain in the ass when you're looking for a good pull,
especially in the zones that I find best for AE. Having the entire
group running around ensures that you get at least 24 mobs on you,
which is a pretty good run since several of the mobs in the zones we
use are 55+.
Also, the enchanters don't have to waste mana mezzing and remezzing as
the puller brings more mobs. I just make a "PIT STOP COMING, BE READY
TO BLAST" key and spam it a couple times before I duck into a
convenient corner, and the rest of my group sets up to start blasting.
It probably wouldn't work as well with another puller, but from my
experience it's the best way to pull. I've used AE fear to pull
before, but then mobs come back at staggered times, and it's not
nearly as easy.
>Cleric is critical to the endeavor not just because of group
>heals, but more importantly because when something
>goes wrong it usually means total group wipe, so that 96%
Also, Upheaval or whatever their AE spell is can be quite useful. I
have friends who get 4 clerics, a puller, and an enchanter together
and AE that way too.
>Puller; bard probably best here, since the plan involves
A bard should almost never get hit while pulling. Running at 2.5
times the speed of the mob makes it quite easy to zoom by just out of
melee range. Also, bards have an 18-second DA. I have yet to find a
pull (non-HT mobs) that I can't live through with Selos and DA. It's
really nice on long pulls too, because it's group DA, so if my group
is up to it I can pull a BIG train, hit DA right when the first mobs
get to us, and have 18 seconds to get the mobs positioned well.
Chanters can just keep pounding their stun spells, as soon as DA wears
off they'll cast.
I've found a way to combat this, generate more aggro than a resisted
stun. In the time it takes an enchanter to cast his stun I can drop
an AE DoT/slow on the whole pile, and within 9 seconds can have 3 AE
DoTs on them, one with slow, one with snare. It seems
counter-intuitive to be dotting mobs that you want mezzed, but my
enchanters stun rather than mez, and they chain stun. I end up
getting attacked while the enchanter ends up relatively unharmed.
If the shit is hitting the fan you messed up the pull. A second
cleric would be nice, but would be much better casting Upheaval.
Wizards do more damage per blast. That's why they're more desired.
In that party there you might end up having the druid handle heals and
learn.
Yeah, but the level 60 DA spell is a get-out-of-death free card. It's
the difference between 30 exp gains, and a TPW in some cases.
Stun, don't mez. Much lower mana cost, faster casting, and nukes
break mez, so a 6-second stun is as useful as a 120-second mez. As
long as their stuns hit, it's all good.
I'll let the skirts explain which spells they use. As far as I'm
This is one you'll have to figure out yourself. My secret spot is
staying secret if I can help it, though a cleric in another guild
knows about it from tagging along with me once or twice. (Hmmm, it's
odd, but I enter certain zones and get tells from characters asking to
join whatever I'm doing, damn loose lips sink ships.)
I know that on Innoruuk there are regular threads about setting up AE
groups on our server forum, and that there is an AE channel. The best
way to get an AE group though is to be known as someone who organized
them. Folks will learn, and start asking you every time you're on if
you're leading an AE group.
Haven't seen anyone mentioning using the wizards to stack the mobs in
this thread. The AE groups that I've been part of all had the wizards
pushing the mobs into a nice tight grouping while the enchanters were
stunning. Not sure what the exact spell is, dont play a wizard, but the
ability to cram all 40 mobs into one tiny corner was very useful when it
came time to break out the PBs.
I dunno about you, but this is much more fun for me then quad kiting... it
started at 19:13:19 and ended at 19:14:34, thats 1 minute and 15 seconds to
kill 20 mobs (it was our clerics first time in Sebilis, let alone doing AE,
so we weren't pulling as many as we could have, and 1 of our chanters was
also playing the warrior)
The hits are a lil off, some didn't hit for full damage (tho most didn't)
and to make up, I didn't count the damage from the last 2 casts (which hit
about 10 mobs each)
AFAIK you need point blank (ie centered on self) AOE spells to affect
massive numbers of mobs, we aren't quadding here. If there are targetable
spells that will hit 50 close packed mobs, fine
Pet not important but if mage can do the nuke job that will
make finding party easier.
I do think Mez was used while the waves of mobs were
coming in, though. Stun start just before nukes do, I bet.
This would mean fewer chances for resists perhaps. Or
you could stack stun with mez to reduce consequences
of stun resist or mez break early. We did have two
chanters working so this was a belt and suspenders group
anyway.
hmm, does Stun Command have no mob count limit? I have
two AOE stuns, maybe with.. hmm three clerics, we
could lose the chanters entirely? Each cleric drops an
AOE stun at intervals so mobs are continuously under
the umbrella till first cleric's first stun finally comes back up.
Fortunately clerics have to perfect this sort of rotation
timing for CH chains, so a stun chain should be just
a matter of fine tuning the skills to the new venue
I use this to AOE kite with a druid friend, she
gets a dozen mobs together in a tight snared
cluster and runs right past me, I time things
carefully so my AOE goes off as they run over
me following her. Then we fuss around a bit
while she gets them all to pay attention to her
again and repeat. After a couple hits like this
we swap, as by now many of the mobs don't
want to come off me no matter what... so I circle
them up and overrrun -her- position.
We can't drop high HP mobs this way, but low
blues are doable, biggest problem is that the
mobs don't treat a wimpy little druid very nicely,
she's fragile.
OK, so what if we could keep the mobs from
hitting her? Oh, and stop that annoying habit they
have of following me instead of her? Hey what if
we got a chanter to stun them all so they would
stay put? Now we could both spend all our time
nuking.
Hmm, but now there's three of us killing the same
few mobs. Here's a though, get more mobs. After
all, they will all die with the same mana expenditure.
Hmm, but those mobs are pretty low level, cause we
can only do so much damage. Lets get another nuker
and another. After all we will be sitting
there till the two (three) of us med to full... might as
well be five of us medding to full instead.
Man, that druid is getting beat up pretty bad trying to
pull 30 mobs. Maybe we should get some help. Add
a puller here and let him get chewed up, thats a sponge's
job isn't it?
Presto, AOE group. Now lets do the math. Six people.
in group. 20% exp bonus for that. They use the same
mana as they would quad kiting solo. So thats 24 mobs
worth of killing... (assuming you had 6 quad kiters mind you)
but if they kill 20 mobs then they break even, and its
just as simple to kill 30 mobs, or 40, or 50... more than
twice as much exp per hour. Oh, and you can do this
indoors in zones with exp bonuses. And good loot. So
suddenly its three times as much exp and a muchness of
loot on top of that.
As a bonus (and to me a serious one) this involves classes
that can't quad. Clerics and chanters exping up as quickly
as the hitherto favored wizard/druid classes. If you watch
the rest of the thread you'll notice I'm trying to figure out
ways to include other classes as well without seriously
compromising the plan.
Of all the classes that can possibly contribute to an AE group, druids
are about the worst. Upheaval just doesn't cut it compared to what
other AEers can do.
AE mez can only affect 5 mobs at a time. At PB range, the first check
is against the enchanter, so that leaves four mobs. It's stuns all the
way. The PB stuns can hit 50+ mobs, though I'd hate to try it alone.
Wow. The AE groups I've been in (not many) have never tried anywhere
near that many mobs. The only time I ever tried 25+ mob we got waxed,
just too many resists and both enchanters got stunned. Maybe that was
just bad luck, but we usually did about 10 mobs. I'd like to give that
a shot some time.
Mabe we're just doing something wrong.
As others said, chanters AoE stun for this. I've found it works better if
the puller brings -one- wave of mobs per pull. Even if they do show up in
waves, much better to just start the stun cycle and keep it going as more
and more arrive than try to switch from mez to stun. That way, I don't
waste a spell slot on aoe mez and can stick something more potentially
useful there. I also find it handy if I can weave a tashicide (AoE tash)
into the stun cycle near the beginning. It can be done with one chanter.
Two is slightly safer. But more nukers is safer too, since the mobs die
faster.
}Cleric is critical to the endeavor not just because of group
}heals, but more importantly because when something
}goes wrong it usually means total group wipe, so that 96%
}rez is crucial to keeping failure from being all that expensive
Cleric isn't all that critical. But I certainly won't object to having
one. :) I'd prefer a nuker to a second cleric. I suppose the only way
I'd ever do it -without- a cleric is if we all had raid buffs. Chanter
with 750 HP vs chanter with 2300 HP makes all the difference in the world.
:) And then you really aren't going to want to wait for me to heal up,
even with Illusion: Troll. :) Rune and berz str can help a lot though... I
usually rune III and berz myself before every pull.
}Puller; bard probably best here, since the plan involves
}total expenditure of mana, the bard can reduce down time
}by singing manasong. On the other hand, puller also can
}use high HP and AC and disciplines like Defensive or
}spells like Divine Aura... so possibly Warriors or Paladins
}(and heck for some reason I can't think of SK?) might also
}make good pullers. Key ability would be to run fast (a SOW
}outside would probably work for every puller if convenient, or
}puller must have Run 3)
Melee puller, yeah sure. Maximum efficiency seems to be when one of the
nukers is pulling. High level wizards seem to be very good at this. But
the melee puller can be very handy for tanking that one thing in the pile
that turned out to be unstunnable, or higher level, or resists a lot...
Of course, a mage's pet can do this, too.
}Chanters are key because you need to be able to mez 50 mobs
}at a time, necro and bard mez are limited target counts and won't
}work here. You need two because you really really can't afford
}to have any mobs not mezed for any length of time, one chanter
}leaves perhaps 10% of them unmezzed which is too much for the
}cleric to keep the chanter alive thru (five mobs beating down the
}chanter, not good)
5 mobs that get one swing before my next stun is cast. It -can- be bad,
but not usually. If I have a cleric healing me, the second chanter isn't
-entirely- necessary. But it does go a touch smoother. What really
sucks is if one of those mobs manages to stun me, and I have to wait 3-4
seconds before the next stun goes off. Even then, we usually live. :)
}This leaves the actual damage producers to the remaining two
}people.
Two isn't very much. It may be enough. But I'd rather have more. I
think my regular best AoE group has been 60 cleric, me, and 4 wizards
and/or mages.
}I see a lot of people saying that Wizards are needed here.
}However, I see PB AOE on druids and clerics... what exactly
}do wizards bring to the party that druids and clerics don't?
More damage.
}Looks
}to me like having a druid there would be handy as you'd have
}easy access to SOW (just step outside and cast it)
Err... you know a wizard without J/Tboots/run 3? I'm sure they must
exist, but we've always had at least 1...
}and some extra help keeping the chanters alive while setting up.
This 'setting up' of which you speak... what?
<Puller> Inc many
We all run down to the spot
Puller runs by us
I begin to chain stun
Mobs walk into the AoE of the chain stunning and stop.
The nukes start flying.
Druids are not the most efficient in an AoE group. But if they're nice
people, we can make it work with them anyway. :)
I memorize -all- my stuns. There's two different stunning strategies:
One, the early strategy, where you're cycling the long stuns and throwing
the short stuns in between if you get too many resists, and two, the late
strategy, where you're doing the most mana-efficient possible cycle that
keeps stuff continuously stunned, and not worrying too much about the one
mob that resisted. Color Skew and Shift alternated does pretty well for
this, with Flux thrown in when things get out of synch. I aso have my
targetable stun (Lagarnn's) memmed, and hit esc a lot to clear my target.
That way, if one guy resists twice and hits me, I can stun him
individually. Longish casting time on that bugger though.
The key that I think some people don't realize is that stuns can be not
just chained, but overlapped, so guys that resist one stun don't resist
another. If I'm alternating Skew and Slant, casting them both as soon as
they pop up... both are 8 second stuns, 12 second refresh with 2.5 and 1.5
second cast time. So Skew goes off every 14.5 seconds for 8 seconds,
keeping things stunned 55% of the time, and similarly, slant gets 59%. So
just with those two, I'm creating 14% of the time that the mobs have to
resist -two- stuns in a row before they can even swing. Throw in Shift
judiciously, 6sec/13.5sec=44%, and that's 68% of the time... Although it
starts to ge complicated there, because if my timing is off I can end up
with timeslots with triple stunage at the expense of double. But I also
still haven't used flux for another (4/13)=30%, or lagarnn's for that one
intractable bastard. Ultimately, things get -one- swing before the next
stun hits, and then the cleric gets a chance to consider healing me. When
I get to the third or fourth stun the efficency also takes a ding because
the casting times interfere with each other, so I can't cast them the
-instant- they refresh, since more than one is refreshed at any given
time. If I actually sat down and worked out the timing carefully, I could
probably mostly abate that problem and get fairly close to that 98% total
dual stunnage. :) But the -point- is, that a good chanter acting alone can
have the mobs needing to resist not just at least one stun all the time,
but also more than one most of the time. I just wish focus effects worked
on casting times under 3 seconds... :)
}Also seems to me
}a second cleric could be useful here, again more healing capability,
}and significantly higher life span when the S**t hits the fan...
Bah, you aren't casting Cheal on a bunch of robes, so you aren't locked up
for 10 seconds doing that. And our one cleric usually finishes the pull
with well over 50% mana. More if she started the fight with a mod rod in
hand... Unless it's a really weird pull (more than one or two things with
more HP/resists than the rest of the mobs) I usually have 60% or so
myself, and the mod rod still not used.
}Puller needs to be as high level as you can get for the more
}HP and AC and resists. Pullers only real job requirement is
}the ability to live long while bringing in mobs fast.
You seem to have this misguided notion that the puller should be getting
hit...
}Chanters... do they get better AOE mez at some high level?
}Is it required? Since AOE group seems to work on levels
}down near the low end of the Blue scale (so that the AOEs
}are enough damage to kill each mob despite their relatively
}low damage per mob per mana output) I don't imagine
}resists are all that big a deal should one of the chanters be
}slightly lower level.
Chanter stuns are resisted more the higher level the mobs are. So
effectively, -all- our stuns get better every level... We get our 4th AoE
stun at 52, though, and that makes big difference.
}Nukers. What nukes are being used here? Do they scale
}up all that much by level? Really really high Mana levels will
}help in as much as it seems they have to burn all mana out
}in order for their AOEs to get all the mobs to the point of death.
Ok, I dunno squat about the nukes. I just know they make things dead.
:) Oh yeah, and make sure you turn off spell messages and /serverfilter
on. Seriously. I mean it this time. :)
}Druids also get those spells, afaik, in the lower end of the 50s.
}I can easily scare up a 58 druid (in fact unless convinced that
}a druid -can't- sub for a wizard in this will almost certainly have
}her in most of my groups for personal reasons) is there any
}reason this would be inadequate?
Not optimum, but if you really like her, you'd be a fool not to bring her
along. :) Something almost always happens that you didn't expect, in any
group, AoE or otherwise, and then what makes the difference between
smashing victory and the agony of defeat is being grouped with reliable
people you trust that know how to play their characters, and not whether
you had the 'optimum' group. But I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir. :)
}What about mages, seems to me I recall them getting a similar
}line which struck me as useless at the time. What would
}prevent them from joining in here as an AOE nuker, do their
}lines suck in some way? Heck, seems to me they could even
}make pets, now that they don't aggro on mezed mobs, you'd
}have a little more protection for your nukers on the few mobs
}which escape or break mez.
Mages rock. Let me say that again, in case someone was deaf. Mages -so-
rock. Yes, they have good nukes... Not as good as wizzie, but not that
distant a second. They have pet tankage for tank-mezzing that
inconvenient unstunnable add that wandered in halfway through, they have
mod rods... And this -really- impressed me.
}Where to go to do this?
I've had good luck in Acrylia and ME. Acrylia was only once, and kind of
a bizarre group... It's been a while, but there was a necro involved
somehow which made me wonder why my mana bar wouldn't go down no matter
what I did. Bard puller did work well there. I think there was more than
a group of us, and there was some degree of worry that at 53 I wouldn't be
able to stun effectively. The stunning was mostly ok, although I did die
once or twice. Luckily, when I did bite it, everyone else just zoned. :)
ME was my regular spot, with mostly Umbral Toilers and the occasional Big
Shadow Thing or 4-Armed Whatsis. The worm things wre a pain if we picked
one of those up, but that's what the mage pets took care of for us.
Typical pull was about 15-20 toilers and 2-3 shadows. Ideal pull would
have been every toiler in the zone and nothing else. :)
3 enchanters
1 cleric
2 epic wizards (to pull)
You don't mez early waves, you stun them. Basically pull as many as you can
without dieing, get them to the enchanters who ae-stun, and pack them into a
tight bunch.
Re-cast your epic (and get healed) and go get another 5-10 mobs, rinse and
repeat. In Acrylia we had 2 wizards doing the pulling (me and 1 other)
Once there is sufficient mobs (its the same mana to kill 25 mobs as it is to
kill 50mobs, so make sure your being effective with your pulls) and once
they are all packed tightly (pb ae isnt a huge radius) let rip with your
jyll's line of spells.
Mobs are perma stunned, so even clerics unleash their PB Ae's. In 1minute
or so, you just killed ~55 mobs.
For places like Sebilis, Chardok, 2 enchanters are fine. Add in another
wizard, druid or magician.
I've also been the puller for an AE group on my monk, me, 1 cleric, 2
enchanters, 2 wizards. Same deal, just I do the pulls instead of the
wizards.
Important things about AE groups.. never even bother trying with less than 2
enchanters. 1 enchanter will NOT cut it
No way. Enchanter stun is FAR superior to cleric stuns. Bear in mind 5
seconds of no stun, and your whole group is wiped out.
Wizard PB AOE spells are faster casting/lower recast than Druid or Cleric PB
AOE. From a brief look at some of them at Caster's Realm, it also looks
like they are better mana efficiency. I'll talk more about this below.
Wizards have fire, cold, and magic based spells, so if you are fighting mobs
that resist a particular kind, Wizards will have something else to use.
Finally, I believe Wizard nukes have a better chance of landing than those
of other classes. (It's kind of the nuking equivalent of the Cleric healing
bonus).
Oh, Wizards are also way more likely to be specialized in Evocation, which
will help some.
...
If you can get a regular group together to do this, why not try learning in
a safer area? Go to a lower level dungeon, mem lower level AOE spells, and
practice on greens. Sure, you don't get XP, but you also don't die (as
much). Get comfortable with AOE'ing 20 greens, then move on to the real
mobs.
> Spells I'm familiar with that work on this principle are Earthquake,
> Upheaval, and some of the Word series. Clerics get the good ones
Earthquake: 246 damage/mob for 375 mana.
Upheaval: 718 damage/mob for 675 mana.
Unspoken Word: 605 damage/mob for 427 mana.
Suppose the mobs have 6000 hitpoints. That takes 9 casts of Upheaval. That
is 6075 mana. I think Druid AOE is similar. 6075 mana is more than 2
Clerics of Druids have, so you'll need three nukers, maybe four. With
Wizards, you could do it in two.
While that would be frustrating, it has little to do with the topic at
hand.
Druids are a jack of all trades class. They don't do any job best, but
they
do a lot of jobs ok.
The druids you are talking about had their job wrong; they were nuking
when their job was healing.
As much as you say "druids are not wizards" you'll hear "druids are not
clerics" just as often. When there's a cleric in the group, druids heals
are best used for emergencies, slapping a fast one on someone while
the cleric is healing someone else, or on the MA to help him live long
enough for a CHeal... sure, the druid should keep this in mind, but should
spend most of his time nuking or worrying about DS/Regen and snare
or...whatever his real job is.
For our purposes here, the druid would be there as a PBNuker. I'm
aware she'd not be as good in this role as a Wizard, but on the other
hand we'd... hmm, nothing exciting. We'd get to have her along instead
of some stuffy wizard we don't know, thats what we'd get. Less efficient
but a lot easier to trust someone you know. Oh, and there'd be that
backup heal thing, after all its not as though AOE group is a CHeal
situation.
Do these two points apply specifically to the PB AOE lines? Because those are
the only spells we need concern ourselves with, if there's a mob present that
needs single target nuking we are doing things very poorly. Plan is to kill
50 mobs at a time, not one.
Yes, I've noticed clerics are much more likely to specialize in (alteration
IIRC, its
been so long since I assigned it and you can't read it in the list) the healing
specialization,
making our heals even more efficient relative to most druids and shaman than
Somewhere else in this thread I proposed doing just that, going to places like
blackburrow or mistmoore where ludicrous trains are dead easy to come by.
That won't prepare us for the high level mobs that have better stun resists,
or are much better at stunning the chanters, or the specifics of pulling 50+
mobs
in a given zone without grabbing the unstunnable one or running into a corner
that
gets you dead... I expect deaths, frankly.
Well you have 6 slots, the highest chanter proposal I've seen is for 3, there's
always (it seems, and certainly if I'm in the group) a cleric, so that leaves
two slots open at least. Wizard for one slot, and druid plus cleric to make
up for the second wizard slot... and thats if we really have to have 3 chanters
which seems like serious overkill, most say two and some say one.
Currently considering
Cleric (me, so naturally always in any group I form)
Druid (my partner in 90% of my non solo EQ playing)
Chanter
Chanter
Wizard
Any puller
(any puller )have a lot to choose from and want to be able to get as many
guild mates some of the AOE gravy and training as possible. Thus they
don't have to be Optimal. I'm partial to Bard in theory as I see the added
mana regen in between fights as helpful, but perhaps I'm fooling myself and
that won't speed us up since we also have to wait for the mobs to respawn.
If the wizard of the day happens to have her epic and be pulling capable,
then we sub in "any PBAOEr" for that "any puller," again doesn't have
to be the optimal class for the job.
Are there any classes that wouldn't be covered under "any puller" or "any
PBAOEr"?
Lance
You won't kill every single mob with your PB AE's. Sometimes you may be
left with just 1 (like a named) othertimes its 2-3, in which case PB's are
not effective enough to use. Mobs all have different HP's, will resist
differently etc.
Like I said it depends. If you want to limit yourself to 25mob sebilis
pulls then stick with 2 enchanters.
If you have 1 enchanter.. well your dieing a pointless death (good luck
c.ring as a bunch of naked casters)
Remember, ONE partially resisted stun with a single chanter, and your ALL
dead. Whether you have full mana or not, NOTHING is saving a chanter alive
with a bundle of ae mobs hitting it
If you want real AE action (55mob first pull, the "warmup" pull.. I will
post a log of this when I remember) then you want 3 chanters.
2 clerics and a druid your suggesting? Bear this in mind, whether you pull
5, 15 or 50.. your going to use the *same* mana to kill them. AE groups
aren't easy, and you wont get anywhere just throwing together any random
characters
Too weak. Even at 60, druids just don't cut it as real AE damage dealers.
I've never seen a single wizard AE group, and Im sure there was a big reason
for that.
Don't fool yourself into thinking as a cleric your PB Ae's are crucial, or
that an additional cleric can in some way replace a wizard or magician or
nuking purposes.
I've pulled for my AE groups as my monk (in sebilis), my wizard (sebilis and
acrylia), and a guild warrior in seb (he was botting the chanter and we
really needed a second one to get going)
In a zone like HS, I've seen paladins make effective AE pullers (remember
your going to eat a lot of HT's)
Nope, backup heals just don't happen in an ae group. You can expect to heal
your pullers each time they fetch more mobs, but once the killing begins you
can expect either
b) mobs aren't stunned for whatever reason.. your a few seconds from wiping
ps I prefer a.. thats why i would *never* AE with just 1 enchanter
c) a couple mobs aren't stunned, just for enough time to hit once or twice
each.
The one time I've done AOE group, this happened with some frequency.
Not only during the killing, but in the "holding pattern" phase. We had
two chanters, but even the best odds two chanter combo has only a 98%
total stun rating, according to one of the other posts in the thread. This
means that one mob in a 50 pull gets out from under every other stun
cycle on average. I was healing the chanters with fast heals till we were
ready for nukage.
Thing is, healing two chanters and a puller all at the same time strikes me
as possibly (not probably, but possibly) dicy, and as you note, one of the
chanters dies and you suddenly have a much riskier situation.
I don't think I was throwing heals out that were particularly better than
what a druid could do, though. While I'd want a cleric handy for rez
in case of wipe, as far as operations go, does a cleric really offer any
more than a druid does for this sort of thing?
On the other hand, if you have a druid you get fast transportation
to your AOE destination... or to more than one if you find the first
is occupied. And you get an evac out... not useful for emergencies,
of course (there is no AOE group emergency that can wait 9 seconds
for an evac) but handy when its time to fold up your tents and go
home. Plus, I enjoy hanging out with this particular druid, so I'd be
willing to stretch unless its crippling to do so.
a) is certainly the best possible result but I think in the real world the
best you can expect is c)
Sorry if I wasn't clear - during the killing is when I meant theres no real
healing going on (and certainly no backup healing going on).. the key is to
kill the mobs asap, before people start going oom.
In every AE group I've done (excluding wipeouts) the only person to die has
been a puller (wizard)
On our 55mob acrylia pull, the 3 chanters were happily chain stunning and
taking little to no damage.
Aego I guess. Casting time of heals? Remedy is generally good enough a
heal.. whats a druids cast time for 400 or so hp?
Well an AE group is built around wizards.. so transportation, evacs, TL's
etc are already there.
1 cleric, 2 enchanters, 1 druid, 2 wizards (preferably with epics so they
can pull)
In an optimal group there is no place for a druid or melee.. but a guildie
druid has joined ae groups on a lot of occasions (optimal isnt such a high
criteria when its a guildie/friend I guess)
Well, thats where the puller gets to have a little fun, meleeing down the
already
massively injured leftovers. If you have gone the wizard puller route, then of
course you have a wizard handy to do this... but since we are discussing the
I think one chanter sounds nuts, myself, I like the idea of overlap. Three
though, I'm not sure I'm that fanatical, after all there's a 96% res waiting
if I happen to die, and I'm making far more than the remainging 4% back
on a single AOE kill cycle.
The "partially resisted" part is the key here, you often get one or two mobs
lose smacking the chanter... so healer keeps him alive while he fixes that.
Second chanter better because that means less chance of those mobs managing
to interrupt cast of stun and delaying till more mobs wake up... but I can
assure
you I was regularly saving chanters from dying to unstunned mobs during the
three hours we did this.
I don't need the absolute optimal AOE group, I'm willing to accept a
group capable of handling only 50 mob pulls in relatively whimpy
zones like Chardok
I imagine Optimal group would be
3 chanters, 3 wizards, cleric camped out at the SS.
I'm not trying to throw them together randomly... as you can see from this
thread, I'm asking questions, questioning assumptions, and trying to get
the information to make informed decisions. The difference between 12 mobs
and 60 mobs is in the number of mobs who resist, and the length of time
it takes to gather them all up (giving more instances of resists) and, hmm, the
number of "leftovers" who got enough partial resists to AOEs that they lived
thru the barrage.
I thought about 2 clerics and a druid... but as you see below the combination
I'm currently proposing is 1 cleric, 1 druid, 1 wizard
Thus, I'm asking. Is there really a reason? What is it? Can we overcome it?
How about
GROUP ONE
Cleric
Druid
Chanter_01
Chanter_02
Wizard_01
Wizard_02 (epic wiz, puller)
Is that worse than
GROUP TWO
Cleric
Chanter_01
Chanter_02
Wizard_01
Wizard_02
Melee puller?
Seems to me group one actually has better damage output than group two,
although not as good as one with Wizard_03 (epic wiz, puller) instead
of the melee...
I was also specifically interested in a type two group with a bard as the
puller. My theory here was that the bard would significantly reduce
down time between pulls, while still doing about as well as any other
melee puller as far as pulling and finishing off the odd leftover.
Here's the nitty gritty. How much worse is cleric AOE or druid AOE than
wizard or mage AOE? Can two healer AOErs sub for one wizard
AOEr? I'm suggesting taking the third chanter slot and giving it to druid
instead, hoping that the druid heals will help keep both chanters alive
and that the druid will then add to damage output
I'm confused here. You require 3 chanters. You haven't contradicted the
cleric. That leaves two slots open. If your wizard is puller, then no
problem...
but if you have the monk pull then that leaves only wizard/cleric as your AOE
production. Is a wizard and a half really adequate? Earlier you said you have
to have two wizards...
If you have to have 3 chanters, and you have to have two wizards, and you
have to have a cleric... then there is only one AOE group construction possible,
and oh by the way you need a pulling wizard.
If you want Divine Aura pulling, hey, you have a cleric handy. I even have -two
divine spells to use to that paladin's one! Course now you are happy you have
the
druid along since she can heal the chanters... Cleric can pull himself between
pulls though.
Damnit....now you got me curious. Hope this new excitement doesnt lead
to massive xp loss but last night was my first AOE group......sort of.
consisted of.
Cleric
Cleric
Druid
Wizard
Wizard
Big ol Ogre warrior with lots of AC and HP
Now I was one of the wizards. We were both 19th level.
The rest were like 14 -16 and we were at orc shrine in
oasis. No chanters stunning but ogre could taunt to no
end and took hardly any damage. Ogre would pull a bunch
and get them all around him in a tight knot. Then druid
and wizards would spam AOE's while clerics healed tank
and took aggro off casters. Not the same sort of AOE
group youve been discussing but it was massive xp for
the lower levels and pretty good for us 19's. Also, we
werent using PBAOEs (dont have the runes yet). I wanna
do this again with ogre pulling about 12 or so and each
of us spamming PBAOEs. I guess the ogre was acting as
a enchanter here with the premise that instead of being
stunned they keep attention on him. The dynamics of this
will change of course as we get up in level and we cant
let mobs beat on us for even a second before they either
get stunned or tank regains aggro. At least it was a fun
break from the idiot monotony of low level grinding.
Well if you weren't using PB AOE then you were doing
a maximum of 4 mobs at a time, right? Seems to me that
some classes get PB AOE very very early on, and you might
look into that as an option. The key to this plan is being
able to take out LOTS of mobs with little more mana spent
than you would in taking out just a few.
I remember one of my first characters ( mage or wizard, was
a couple years ago and I didn't stick with those two long )
had one of these at either first or fourth level. At the time
they seemed entirely useless...
Very interested to hear how your attempts to use this sort
of strategy at low levels work out.
Well, in a sense, -all- the heals are backup heals, since you're just not
healing the main tank, not using CH, and there is no constant stream of
damage to count on.
}> a) all the mobs are perma stunned and nobody gets hit
}> b) mobs aren't stunned for whatever reason.. your a few seconds from wiping
}c) a couple mobs aren't stunned, just for enough time to hit once or twice
}each.
Yeap, that's about what happens.
}The one time I've done AOE group, this happened with some frequency.
}Not only during the killing, but in the "holding pattern" phase. We had
}two chanters, but even the best odds two chanter combo has only a 98%
}total stun rating, according to one of the other posts in the thread. This
}means that one mob in a 50 pull gets out from under every other stun
}cycle on average. I was healing the chanters with fast heals till we were
}ready for nukage.
I think you've misinterpreted the data, assuming that's my 98% figure.
98% was the maximum -theoretical- value for how much I can be
double-stunning, by myself. Ie, on top of the 'making sure every mob has
at least one stun cast on it'. So, substitute 198% up above. :) It's a
theoretical figure assuming perfect connection and exact timing on the
casting, in reality, I think it's probably more like one basic stun, 60%
double stunned, and 5% triple stunned. So for the sake of argument, call
it 60% doublestunned, it'll make my math easier. :)
What this figure doesn't take into account, though, is mob resists, which
are proportionate to the chanter's level. In order for the chanter to be
really effective, you can't have more than 5-15% resists. (At some point,
Martin said something about mobs 'partially resisting' stun. I'm sure you
didn't quite mean that, I've never seen a partially stunned mob. :) )
My experience is more with about 20-30 mob pulls than 50, but I seem to
get about 10% resists. Ie, for each cast of stun, if we have about 25 mobs
there, I see one to four resist messages, usually. Now this is where the
dual stunning figure comes in. In order for a mob to actually hit me, it
has to have resisted at leastone stun, probably two. So, assumewe have a
50 mob pull, 15% resists, 60% dual stunnage (still a single chanter).
On average, 7.5 mobs resist the first stun. So 7.5*0.15*0.60=0.675 mobs
will resist the second stun, and 3 mobs will not have had to face a
second stun at all, for an average of 3.68 mobs active at any one time
pounding on someone. Hmm, that's pretty high. :) If your chanter's
getting 15% resistage, he's probably too low level to go it solo here. :)
By similar calculations, 10% resists leaves 5 first stun mobs leading to
0.3 dual resisters, and 2 not-dual-stunned. So on average, that's
2.3 active mobs, much more reasonable. In both of these cases, I also
have my targetted stun memmed specifically to stop one of those guys in
his tracks, too.
I have faith in a cleric to be able to heal me while I tank one or two low
blue mobs for a few seconds. Especially since the mob frequently decides
to be angry at a nuker instead of me, mid to late in the fight, so the
damage gets spead around a little. And, which mob I'm tanking changes
every 8 seconds, because it's a different resister, so he seems to spend
at least half the time crawling forward in the pack to get at me or a
nuker, or running the yard and a half from nuker 1 to nuker 2. The one
time ping-ponging is good. :) And I'm not even gonna mess with
triple-stunning or I'll get a headache. :)
These numbers also get a lot lower if it's a less than 50 mob pull, which
I prefer anyway, because it's just a bit more relaxed. :)
The figures also go way down if you get two enchanters, since you're
looking at complete triple stunning and quadruple stunning in significant
amounts. Either that, or both chanters relax more. :) Complete triple
stunning is pretty easy. Chanceof a mob resisting 3 stuns s the cube of
the basic resist rate (assuming the two chantes have the same resist rate,
of course. :) ) so at 10%, they each have a one in a thousand chance of
resisting all three stuns.
}Thing is, healing two chanters and a puller all at the same time strikes me
}as possibly (not probably, but possibly) dicy, and as you note, one of the
}chanters dies and you suddenly have a much riskier situation.
Or goes linkdead, or falls asleep at the keyboard because everyone
insisted they -neeeded- him or he woulda gone to sleep hours ago... :)
Here's the extra healer vs. extra nuker tradeoff: You can heal two people
at the same time, which honestly, you are unlikely to need to do very
often. The health bars go down pretty slowly, strangely enough, and
usually one person's getting most of the pounding (chanter), then it
switches (strongest nuker standing closest). And possibly the MT if he's
tanking something that wasn't stunnable. The extra nuker, on the other
hand, makes the time you have to worry about healing for that much
shorter. With 4 nukers, the cleric usually just threw me a baby heal
after the fight, possibly one during, but not usually, and healed the
pet tanking the dang mindworm thingy that got mixed in there. :)
3 nukers means the fight lasts 1.33 times as long, 2 nukers is twice as
long.
}I don't think I was throwing heals out that were particularly better than
}what a druid could do, though. While I'd want a cleric handy for rez
}in case of wipe, as far as operations go, does a cleric really offer any
}more than a druid does for this sort of thing?
Well, you can count on the cleric not to whine about how lame his heals
are. :) I can't say for sure, I've always had a cleric there, except one
time when it was a bunch of low greens (Grachnist camp in WW) and just me
and a druid who'd just gotten upheaval and wanted to show off. :)
}On the other hand, if you have a druid you get fast transportation
}to your AOE destination... or to more than one if you find the first
}is occupied. And you get an evac out... not useful for emergencies,
}of course (there is no AOE group emergency that can wait 9 seconds
}for an evac)
Yea there is...
<nuker1> "Hmm, I'm geting a lot of resists..."
<nuker2> "Yea, me too."
<nuker1> "Think we'll make it?"
<nuker2> "50 now"
<chanter> "I AoE tashed, don't look at me... :)"
<nuker3> "they're starting to drop"
<nuker2> "lom"
(it gets down to two mobs standing, one that dang unstunnable mindworm,
and everyone at less than 5m, and the mage pet is about to die. I
mez the guy I can while the cleric loots and the wiz/dru evacs us.)
}Plus, I enjoy hanging out with this particular druid, so I'd be
}willing to stretch unless its crippling to do so.
Do it. Be sure to report back how it goes. :)
Oddly noone has called me out on the illogic of this little paragraph.
I'm subbing a druid in for one of my wizards. So now we get the
benefits of a porter...
No one see's whats wrong with this?
Yep, that was sort of my point. Any old healer should be able to handle
this. Cleric is there because he can res you after an "oops"
Well, an average of 2 active mobs on a 50 pull means a 96% total stun
average, which makes my point even more strongly than my original
98% total stun figure. Damage is happening. Not a lot of it, no, but
some. And it sure would suck to have that trickle of damage eventually
kill the stunners.
Yes and no. As I said before, the time when I was healing when I did
this was not during the nuking segment... heck I was busy blowing
all my mana as fast as I could on PB AOE's myself. No, it was during
the buildup, where we had 12 mobs, 24 mobs, 36 mobs, ok now we
have around 50 time to start nuking! Getting mobs into postition took
a while, while the nuke portion didn't take long at all. As I recall, I did
Unspoken Word, Upheaval, Word of Healing (little group heal to take
care of all the people taking damage while I ignored them) Upheaval again,
Remedy anyone who needs it... if anyone at all, Upheaval again and by
this point most mobs were dead, perhaps Celestial Elixer the puller who
is likely tanking the leftovers.
I wish I could, but my game time is pretty limitted just now, which is
part of why I'm on the newsgroup so much. That will clear back up
in a bit, and I have several people interested in working on this, so
its just a question of time. But I figure the more theory I can hash out
here beforehand the more prepared I'll be when the balloon goes up.
I thought Martin called it. Yeh, here we go:
Well an AE group is built around wizards.. so transportation, evacs, TL's
etc are already there.
Maybe it hasn't propagated to you yet. I figured your reasons for wanting
a druid were good enough that it didn't really matter what other reasons
you gave. :) Besides, Wizards can't evac to butcherblock. Or port to
Surefall. :)
