Right, I got into EQ on a free coverdisk from a mag. Now I've just been
shopping, and came across a boxed set of all 4 EQs, together with
promotional maps etc (and ANOTHER mouse mat)
So, basically my question is - what do I gain by getting the expansions?
I know that I can't play certain races unless I get Luclin, but what about
the other 2? and will I only get the benefits when I am high enough level?
TIA
Sid
The Kunark, and Velious addons are new worlds.. Kunark have the Iksar, so if
you wanna be an iksar you will need the Kunark addon. the Velious addon is a
new continent..
So the basic conclusion will be like this :
If you are happy running around Odus, Antonica and Faydwer.. you dont "need"
it.. But if you are to become more than lvl 50 you will need the greater xp
these continents give.. (Velious have a lot of High lvl areas, and Luclin
have probably the most..) I also think the Luclin update is what gives you
the possibility to gain AA (Alternate Advancement) ability to build your
charater past lvl 60 (not 61, but 60 + abilities)

Ruins of Kunark will give you the ability to lvl past 50 to 60. It adds a new
race -Iksar. It also adds some 30 new zones right across the level board
(1-60).
Velious add a further 20 zones but mostly for lvl30+ If your just starting out
its probably not that important yet but its definately nice to have when you
get that high.
Luclin is the most recent, it also the most hardware intensive, try to make
sure you match the basic system requirements or you'll be playing with most of
the new features turned off.
The expansion adds a new race - Beastlord, new cities and zones, approx 30 new
zones for every lvl (1-60), a new transport system that makes travels slightly
easier (if your willing to wait)
What you have to ask yourself is do you enjoy eq: if the answer is yes then you
really can't go wrong by buying the expansion sets and getting them all
together as they are going to give you a huge new world to explore and lots
more hours of fun.

If you're really into EQ, you probably should buy the expansions, or at
least the ones that your system can run alright (if your system was built
within the past 2 or 3 years, you should be alright).
From the Kunark expansion, you get access to another continent with areas
suitable for characters of just about any level. You also can play an Iksar
(lizardman) character.
From Velious, you get access to another continent with areas suitable for
level 30ish characters and up, and a better user interface.
With Luclin, you get access to moon Luclin which has hunting areas
suitable for characters of just about any level range. You also get access
to the Nexus, which is a good travel aid. It also allows you to play a
beastlord character (new class) or a Vah Shir (the cat man race.) Also, you
get access to "alternate advancement" skills for level 51+ characters.
Luclin also includes texture upgrades for original EQ zones (and older
expansion zones) which make the game look considerably better in some
places, plus new character models for all of the races, and elementals
(which you can switch on or off depending on your taste or what your system
can handle).
Any expansion will allow you to advance past level 50.
Those are the main advantages, though there are a few others. Expansion
zones tend to look better, tend to be more sophisticated, and often have
better loot than comparable old world zones. Once you get in a guild (if
you're not already in one), you may find that a lot of your guildmates like
to spend a lot of time on Kunark or Velious, and you don't want to miss out
on raids, and other grouping activities because you don't have the
expansions.
If you think you're going to continue playing EQ over the next several
months or years, buy the expansions... if you're not sure, you may want to
hold off.

*That should read a new class - Beastlord and new race - Vah Shir
