It is a question of strategy. The "big red one" hunting method is never as
good as "the gravy train" for xps or loot. Why struggle to kill a single
Hill Giant or Cyclops when the same group can drop 3 or 4 high blue conning
mobs and continue to fight continually. Yep, Giants and Cyclops are no good
unless you are soloing them or dropping them continually with no downtime.
On Cazic-Thule, there is a Bard who solos 2 Hill Giants at a time. I betcha
he is getting xps.

I think the real reason no one hunts there is the lack of ability to sit 5
steps from the zone while doing so.

You're not missing a damn thing. Rathe Mountains is the _worst_ zone I have
ever been in. I've seen people say how wonderful it is, but I think they
are just happy that it's so uncrowded.

The sad thing is, I have probably spent more time in that zone than anybody
else. Sometimes I truly enjoy this zone, but as soon as I start getting exp
and loot, it all goes down hill. this is because after you kill something
good, a damned level 8 lizardman spawns. The drake hill is great for exp
from lvl 15-24, but after you kill the drakes you have to run around and
kill green crap lizardmen. Same with the Giant Skeles and Cyclops. Killing
lizardmen and waiting another 15 minutes for a good spawn is just too
tedious. No low level players ever go NEAR the drake hill.. why did they
put lizardmen as a spawn option?

There are two undead towers in this zone with gnome necros inside, and one
undead camp. When killing the gnome necros you get lowered faction with
_Class041. I don't think Verant spent much time on them. They are tough
kills and only drop 1 or 2 plat. To be honest the undead camp isn't that
bad. I see small groups taking it sometimes. The problem is the level
range in the undead camp... you get normal skeletons, dryboned and zombies
mixed in with Skeletal monks and Barbed bone skels. High levels hate the
green crap, and low levels hate the insta kill reds. As soon as a high red
or lots of low greens spawn, the group will leave.

There is a druid camp there that is good exp for evil races, but there is
also a lvl 50 Unkempt Preserver who patrols the area near the camp who will
KoS anybody messing with the druids. Killing the druids isn't worth the
risk. There is also a Paladin camp that would be good for evil races,
filled with lvl 15-23 paladins that would be nice for a group. But right in
the center of that camp lies a high level (35+) paladin.

It's just poorly designed.

Supposedly there is a named drake that drops a nice cloak for mages. That
is the only unique item to Rathe Mountains. It's rare. Very rare. I have
spent the majority of my 25 levels in this zone, and I have never seen it.
I would rather camp the Giant Armadillo or Rahotep in Northern Ro.

Overall, this is the one of the worst zones in the game. I'm kicking myself
for spending so much time there. Brad has said in an interview that Rathe
Mountains needs some major updating, and i agree.

Simply because there is no exp to be gained there. We get groups
together to drop Cyclops' every now and then, and they are conning yellow
to us now (some red), and it takes so long and a lot of effort to kill one,
and when we finally do.. We get squat for exp(and loot). Killing a Cazic-
Thule blue lizard defender gives a group of 6 more exp than a Cyclops. Sad,
but true. One day we even took on a Hill Giant with a very skilled Cleric
(he was our level also - everyone we group with is +/- 3 levels) and we
finally dropped the sucker after he killed one of us and AGAIN we got SQUAT

bubble.. It didnt even go a millimeter... It took us about 10 minutes of
fighting to drop this Giant. It was the toughest battle we've ever fought.

I don't understand how Verant can tell people to go to these zones because
they are so empty. There is a REASON it is empty. It's because there is
NOTHING to be gained there. Sure, it is fun watching such huge and tough to
beat creatures fall for the first few times, but when you dont get rewarded
zilch, its a huge let down. We have been doing this between levels 25-27
(yes we had a group of these levels take out a Hill Giant).

We have yet to see why anyone would go to this zone. Even the Giant
Skeletons at levels below that were just as poor for exp and loot. '

And please keep it that way. I have been hunting in the Rathe mountains for a
few levels now and I love it! Peaceful and enjoyable. Lots of fun killing
giants and the sphinx. I do wish they would fix the area entrance to the
giants where three giants or three cyclops get stuck. I love the Rathe
mountains.

Poor loot??? Why, you can pick up some bones from them :P)

>Am I missing something?

I think what they mean is that they have added many, many creatures
that (my guess) would be good to hunt in the mid-teens.

Just out of curiosity, what level are the Sphinxes and what
sort of faction hits do you take for thwacking one?

The reason why no body in the mid-teens hunt in the rathe mountain is
because it is flooded with Cyclopes and giant-skeletons... scary.

(I was whacking a lizard man when I looked behind me and saw 3 Cyclopes...
scared the heck out of my little wood-elf ranger hehe)

I agree with everything else but you can sit 5 steps from the zone to lake
rathe. I was in a group pulling cyclops there and we were actually kicking
their asses fairly easily and got good exp.

What, are you kidding? I bind myself right inside the zone
entrance. :)

While I agree that Rathe is kinda annoying when it comes to hunting there,
there are more than just this one rare item there. Some shaman (or
shaman/druid) only weapon droped by some named lizard dude.

You can bind yourself in arena a short 2 zones away.

Arena off Lake Rathe, and of course Oggok for the evils. Not far
away at all for a bind.

Arena is about 5 minutes away not counting zone transfers.

I saw a named drake there quite awhile ago. I wasn't sure what it was
since I'd never before seen a drake at that time. I eventually left
because it was getting harder and harder to stay away from the drake.
He was red to me and not terribly pleased to see me. That was well
over a month ago though.
