Since the servers and down, and since I feel the urge to write, I thought
I'd write about some of my Everquest "firsts".

I remember as a young DE Wizzie (my first and now abandoned toon) camping
for XP by the pyramid in Nek Forest. A necro and I were killing skeletons,
when suddenly a zombie appeared. That was way too much for us. The necro
asked in /ooc for someone to come kill it for us. A high-level wizard came
and killed it with one blast. That was the first time I'd seen something
killed with one nuke and it left me starry-eyed. I yearned for the day I
would be able to do that.

The first time a spell I cast was resisted was when I, a fourth-level
wizzie, decided to Root the Priest of Discord so I could kill him for easy
XP. I didn't even know spells *could* be resisted. That was a particularly
painful lesson to learn.

The first time I was summoned was when I took part in a GM event. I was a
level 32 cleric hunting for XP in Eastern Wastes. The head GM of our
server, whose name was Valindor, created a mid-level mob by the name of
"Valindork" and started shouting, taunting all the players in the zone.
Naturally we started responding, and I challenged him to show his face. In
response, he summoned me to him. That was *freaky* - without a "LOADING,
PLEAE WAIT..." I was suddenly in a new place altogether. Took me a few
seconds to recover from the shock. Eventually, about fifty players
converged and killed "Valindork". Valindor showed up to congratulate us on
a valiant effort. He left Drinal shortly thereafter; I think that event was
his "farewell" to the server.

The first time I got "sitting" aggro. This happened during a group in EW,
camping the Rygorr fort. The puller grabbed an Elite from the fortress, and
it ran up to *me* and started attacking. I was shocked, *shocked*! I had
no idea what had happened and was convinced this was some major new bug. It
took several repetitions in different situations before I realized that
sometimes it was wise to stand when the puller announced they had incoming
mobs.

The first (and so far, only) time I got scammed - I was level 58. I thought
I had been so careful, but then someone convinced our guildleader they were
the alt of one of our mains and got an invite into the guild. And because I
trusted guild members implicitly, I gave out some very valuable equipment I
never saw again. That was about the lowest moment in my EQ existence. On
the upside, lots and lots of people on Drinal were very sympathetic and came
through with very generous offers of plat and equipment to compensate for my
loss. I didn't accept any of the offers, but I did feel very buoyed by the
offers and got back on my feet very quickly. So overall it was a positive
experience - I got to see how nice some people can be right after I found
out how exploitive other people can be.

The first time I met someone who played EQ in real life - this I'm breaking
into two separate encounters. Once I was standing in line to buy Baldur's
Gate II. The guy at the register was talking with a co-worker about playing
an AE mez song to help with a bad Frost Giant pull. I quietly said, "But
don't play it near Thurgadin or the guards will aggro you." He got a good
laugh about that.

The second and more meaningful encounter for me was when I found that
someone in Monual's first guild was also from the Twin Cities area. He was
in Edina, and I live in Plymouth. We regularly called each other that by
the name of the cities we lived in. The very first Fan Faire I was
consciously aware of took place in Minneapolis. I looked for him there, and
saw his character's name on the nametag we were all given to wear. So I
grinned and called out "Edina!" He enthusiastically responded "Plymouth!"
That was a great moment - to know that there were actual people behind the
toons I dealt with on a regular basis. =)

Anyone else remember some EQ "firsts" for them?

My first to mention was running through high hold pass. I recently became a
level 36 druid and wanted to test earthquake on trains in runny eye. Upon
zoneing in I ran down the bridge and someone msg me asking "would you please
kill the giant for me?!" I said what the hay, first time for every thing. I
sent an ooc and said "Im about to solo my first Giant who wants to watch?"
Needless to say a crowd of about 20 players amassed as I rooted a Hill
Giant. Next I snared, next I immolated, and next I Drones of Doom. I ran
back to a comfortable sitting distance and watch him slowly die. Every few
minutes I would hit him again with snaring roots and just watch his life go
down. It was great and I got 44 plat out of it. Not to mention a few
cheering fans.
Savior Lanier bows to all.
Druid who will hit level 37 tonight if the servers come back up.

With my first character some nice PC came by and gave me and my friends 30p
to buy equipment with... at the time that was the most money any of us had
ever seen! We considered saving it to buy a "Great Vekium Staff" for 66p
from a vendor, but thought we'd never see that much money for a long time
and split the coin three-ways.

Last week I had my first dragon encounter and first plane raid.
The Naggy raid went terribily wrong, total wipe out. But the Fear raid was a
succes for me. I got a nice druid waist item.

That is one of the things I enjoy the most as I get up in levels. I
periodically go back to Nektulos and hand out pp, my old gear, or collected
6/18 weapons. The joy from a genuine newbie can really make your day.

I go back to basically day 1, so I had some pretty funny firsts.I remember
buying a bronze helm for 17pp, and proudly showing it off everywhere. People
used to stop me and ask where I got such a thing and to marvel at the
wonderful bird-like shape (I was a wood-elf).

First buff ever cast upon me was SOW. I had no idea what was going on. I
remember the druid casting on me, and I just stood there waiting for
something to happen. She told me to "move", and I did, like the wind. Ever
since, running without SOW or Selo's has been aggrevating.

My first ever night of camping involved my group taking a whole night to
camp for a Cold Iron Morning Star from the Preacher in Permafrost. We must
of spent about 6 hours in there, inching our way closer and closer to the
Preacher Room. It was probably still one of my favorite times in EQ.

My first character had no maps, no knowledge of allakazham or this newsgroup,
no understanding of /loc. And of course it was before you "repopped fully
dressed".
At around level 5 or 6 my Surefall Ranger had been playing in Qeynos after a
kindly guy in a robe took me there and "bound" me. I had never seen anything
but bugs, skeletons and these ugly wolf / dog creatures called Gnolls.
I got lost one day and accidentally zoned into this huge plains area... very
flat and only a couple of guard towers and no one helpful. I spent forEVER
there - mainly running from HUGE BUGS as I recall. Finally I came upon a farm
house with... YES!!! human beings. I was SO relieved!! I ran over to them as
fast as I could, sure that they would help me find my way home. I didn't even
get to hail them before I got the "BAM you've been killed by a bandit".
Loading... please wait....
I lost my first leather tunic that day that I had saved and paid for all by
myself... and it was a long time til I trusted ANYONE that looked like a
regular person.
(But I'm over it now. Really I am).
Second biggest shock was when I made my first "world tour", (the long way, on
foot and by boat), and found that THEY KILLED BEARS IN THE COMMONLANDS!!!! It
was an awesome journey though, all my "stuff" safely in the bank in case I got
killed again. I met some very kind people along the way....

Heheh. My first werewolf was also a thieving KSer in WC, fortunately
I was only about 20 steps from the zone because it dropped the bear
it stole from me at about the same instant that I realized what was
happening. Damned werewolves! Who do they think they are anyway?

My first character was a Half Elf Ranger, which I created at the same
time my girlfriend created her first character - a Half Elf Paladin. I
knew nothing about EQ when I started playing so I created a particularly
intelligent but not very wise Ranger. Needless to say he is now a Bazaar
mule.

A RL work friend showed up and gave me 25p. I thought this was an
absolute fortune! I remember wondering "How could anyone possibly have
so much money as to afford giving this much away!?". He also gave me
some sort of 1HS weapon, which I unfortunately lost during my wayward
adventures in Lesser Faydark.

I remember running around Greater Faydark not knowing where I was, but
absorbing the spooky atmosphere of being lost in the woods. I came upon
a small opening in a green wall, so being the curious Half Elf I was, I
decided to take a peek inside. Upon arriving in Lesser Faydark, I
followed a path until I came across a friendly looking brownie. It
wasn't long after I hailed what turned out to be a not so friendly
brownie that I was back at my bind point without my precious 1HS weapon
(I still don't know what that weapon was!). I was about level 6 at the
time and this was before you respawned with all your stuff. There was no
way I was going to try find my way back to Lesser Faydark and contest
that brownie again to get my weapon back, so I used the money I was
given to buy a shield and a fine steel short sword from a merchant. I
was very proud of my Fine Steel Shortsword, and hoped to save up enough
money some day to get a Fine Steel *Longsword*!

This was the first of the big "adventure" experiences I had. Another was
when I finally discovered what this "Crushbone" place was and boldly
venturing forth into the dark ominous cave which led to it. Also, making
the big journey over to Butcherblock Mountains and discovering the
Dwarven city of Kaladim.

I remember learning how my girlfriend's Paladin's undead fear spell and
my Ranger's snare spell could be put to good use together to fear kite
the undead pawns on the chess board in Butcherblock.

I remember spending hours on end having a wonderful time grouping in
Crushbone, the excitement of looting a Shiny Brass Shield (wow it
glows!) and the sense of achievement from completing the Screaming Mace
quest (then the disappointment when I discovered I couldn't use it due
to neglecting my 1HB skill).

I remember cashing in on players who bought CB belts at 1pp each, while
I was pondering how on Norrath they could possibly afford to pay that
much. I then used this fortune to buy a crystal fiber and a suit of
banded armour from a player blacksmith, which I was very proud of.
Another player even called me a twink.

I remember my first boat ride to Freeport, a city which seemed so far
away on the other end of the world to where I was. Later, with the
navigational advice from my girlfriend, I ran all the way from Freeport
to Halas (merrily following the path in Kithicor Forest not knowing
anything about the evil undead which menace the forest at night) and
made it without incident.

I gave up on EQ for a while, then came back later to start a Mage which
is now my main.

These first memories of EQ seem so long ago, although its only about 9
months ago in reality, but they are quite nostalgic in a way. I almost
feel like I really *was* a young kid growing up.

Nowadays 25pp is nothing more than spare change. I trash many fine steel
longswords to merchants or even destroy them if I am encumbered enough.
The boatride from Butcherblock to Freeport is more of an annoyance than
an adventure, and usually avoided by the firepots. The same goes for a
trip to Halas.

I remember when I was a young halfling druid, sitting in misty thicket and
quite happy with my progress, having obtained a huge sum of money by selling
the 23 misty acorns I had meticulously collected over my time there: 2pp
each from an aspiring vendor, 56pp, a huge sum for a druid who had to fish
(and hope for the rusty dagger and sandal) to obtain the cash to buy spells
previously.

I bragged to people at lvl 14 I would travel to "Freeport" a new and
exciting town to the east. They cautioned me not to go at night, and I
thanked them for their advice. Finally, the big day I'd planned came and I
broke out my maps obtained from EQAtlas and began my run, meticulously
following the path. I arrived in Freeport without incident, and bound
myself there. Being the adventurous sort, I'd thought i'd try to kill some
of the mobs and soon found myself sitting in the EC tunnel recovering from
the nastiest poison i'd ever experienced. While I was sitting there, somone
inspected my meager equipment. (I was wearing my fished sandal, proudly no
less.) He took pity on me and gave me 2 Runed Mithril Bracers. Well, you
can bet those were my prized possession suddenly, and I wore them with pride
until quite recently. I obtained the magic "Velium mace" that day, from
someone giving items away to newbies at the gate. It replaced my newbie
club and was a giant 2 damage more. It did help me kill willowisps tho =).

Another "Thank you" to those kind people, should they be reading this.

That day I found my first guild, which I stayed in and made friends, became
an officer, and stayed with it until it disbanded nearly a RL year later.
/mourn

But life, and EQ, goes on, and I remember my newbie days fondly. I still
travel to Rivervale to buy misty acorns from the newbies, and give out those
junk weapons that are such a godsend to them.

My first naked run across Antonica. Man, was that scary. I was taking
the trip to xfer some gear from my Monk to my wife's new cleric, Tiru. I
think I was level nine or ten. No FD, no good skills. Put the stuff in
the bank and made the run from Qeynos to FP and the boat to BB and then
to Kalidim.

No friends in the game at the time to speak of, no guild, just some maps
printed out from eqatlas. No SoW, no nothing. Made the run naked and it
was heartstopping the whole way.

Ahhh... good times.

[snip]

Well, this could be a long one...

1) My first rescue... I was playing my half-elf Druid, having only recently
found my way from Surefall to the Queynos n00b hunting grounds. I was
proudly sporting a cracked staff (cost: almost a full plat! Given to me by
someone uber enough not to need it!) and wasting kliknik's while keeping a
wary eye out for the queen. I heard a death groan behind me, and for the
first time my casting reactions went on automatic. I whipped around,
targetted the pretty lady that was collapsed on the ground in front of a
Gnoll pup, threw her a heal (she stood up! I had DONE it!) and quickly
polished off the Gnoll in front of her. Years of playing UO, and I had never
gotten to play the hero before. The lady I saved wasn't very impressed or
even thankful, but *I* enjoyed it.

This, however, got me in trouble. Several levels later, I was in Blackburrow
hunting Gnolls down the first ramp. I had just gotten to the point where I
was familiar with the opening areas of the BB underground, and was happily
bashing on a gnoll when I saw an OOC message from Dundee.

2) Dundee, a few others, and myself all knew each other from the UO
newsgroup. Seeing that he was upstairs looking for Gnoll skins for some
quest, I ran up to say hi. I got there just in time to see one of the
dungeon's ubers (a plague rat) attack him, and he immediately fell to the
ground with a death cry.

Well, my saviour addiction took over and I was on automatic. I targetted
him, and started chain casting heals while preparing to get killed by the
VERY red rat. What I didn't know was that the rat was very, very green to
him, he had just been playing around with it, and had hit Feign Death for
the hell of it. Months later when we were all part of the Arbiters Guild,
whenever anyone did a FD, some smartass cleric or Druid would start chain
healing them. <heal><heal><heal><heal>"Look, I'm Gaellic!"<heal><heal><heal>
:-P

Around this time, I learned a very tough lesson. I was preparing for work in
the morning, and as usual I would do a little hunting, park my character
somewhere safe (In this case, just past the guards into the Surefall
Tunnel), and go do something while his mana went up (I didn't have
meditation yet). I heard some commotion from the computer room while I was
putting on my socks, but figured it COULDN'T be anyone attacking ME. Anyting
hostile had to get past the Guards right?

Well, when I got back to the computer there was some nasty gnome named Pyxjn
or something, ripping me a new one. I hadn't known that the guards would
completely ignore some threats. I hobbled to the zone boundry, and came
through with a sliver of health, slow, and poisoned. The only reason I
survived is because I sat down to get the extra healing, and that slowed the
poison long enough for it to wear out just a few points from death.

3) Months later, Gaellic had gone through Blackburrow, gone to EK, and
blasted through several levels there. He went back to Blackburrow as was his
habit to practice some new spells he got at level 24 (I think), and while
trotting to Surefall I hit the tracking button.

Pyxjn. That dirty soandso was nearby! It was time for REVENGE! I found him
standing by the temple ruins between BB and Surefall, and polished him of
with just a few nukes. I looted the corpse, and was delighted to see what
looked like a black pearl. Trotting back to the Surefall guards, I sat down
to med, and pulled open my inventory to check my haul.
Just then someone in the zone started shouting, asking everyone in-zone if
they had seen Pyxjn. I replied that I had just killed him/her and received a
/t asking if I had gotten anything off the body just as I right clicked on
that pearl.

Glowing Black Stone.

What followed was mass confusion as word spread that a non-int caster had
looted the GBS, folks bombed in on me with /t's hoping to get a deal out of
someone that didn't know what he had, my guild informed as to how rare my
find was, and Dundee joked about me winning the lottery. I eventually made a
deal with a high level wizzie who had just gotten back from the opening of
the first of the planes. She was very honest as to how valuable that stone
was, and gave me a Charred Guardian Shield, assorted smaller items, and 1k
pp for it. This was quite a windfall for me at the time.

4) Feeling 00bur. After getting one of my more powerful spells in the
"Earthquake" line, I once again went to Blackburrow to play and practice
with them before getting in a REAL fight. In my day, Blackburrow had been
very full, and famous for its deadly trains, which I was fairly adept at
dodging. Being much later, the dungeon had nowhere near the player
population it used to, and trains were rarer. I was sitting in the entrance
from Queynos, swapping out spells, when a massive train reminiscent of the
old days came up. Several fighters stood shoulder to shoulder trying to get
some licks in before they had to zone, so I stood up, waded into the middle
of the Elites, Guardsmen, and Burly's flailing away at the fighters and
touched off my best "Earthquake" spell. A few seconds of cast time, and
every gnoll around me died. There must have been 25-30 of them lying around
my feet. After a long pause, one of the fighters just said "wow...".

5) Being suprised by a hill giant, and being high enough level that he left
me alone. Giant and/or Griffon used to = Death...

6) Right after I got my first "Circle" spells. I can't tell you how good it
felt to be able to do favors for all those guildmembers that had helped me
out. They had always been higher level than me, but at LEAST I could help
them get from one side of the world to the other.

Hmm. Many more, but ya gotta stop SOMETIME!

Whenever I pass through Neriak, I kill one of the "Tempi" sisters

Not only does it have pretty nice stats, but it's pitch black

You will not evade me, "Richard Lawson" <no...@msn.com>:

>Since the servers and down, and since I feel the urge to write, I thought
>I'd write about some of my Everquest "firsts".

My first kindness from another: at level 3, someone in GFay shouted
he'd give away patchwork armor for batwings. I made a deal with him,
set out for those pesky bats, and by the time I dinged 5, I was fully
dressed.
My first group: level 6 or 7, either orc hill or GFay bandits. A day
or two later, I got a tell from a stranger. I was deeply impressed
when /who showed it to be a 27! monk who was badass enough to be
exping in CT! It was the main character of a little gnome enchanter
I'd been grouped with. We teamed up whenever we could when I got
higher in level, both before and after I restarted, and although he
quit with the Luclin release, we still maintain contact. Another
person from that first group is still on my friendslist, although as
her druid instead of her old retired wizard.
My first magic weapon: around level 14, I started hankering for
something magic so I could hit wisps. The hankering became an urge
after a ghoul found me while I was handing in derv rings. I mentioned
I was saving up for a runed totem staff in a group, and when one of
the others had to leave, he first took me to the bank and pulled a RTS
out of his bags for me :)
My first ubermob: Level 34, Avatar of Fear. Myself, monk friend, a
couple rogues, enchanter, cleric. A couple minor overpulls and adds
and AoF popping and heading for the druid first while two people were
out of the zone, leading to one of my first evacs (which was a
complete success). We headed back in, collected the missing two
people, and butchered the ugly thing. Twice. Getting the killshot was
one hell of a feeling :)
My first (and only) GM reward: last halloween, I was in Freeport
working on smithing when someone shouted for people to hear his sad
tale. Someone with two names. /track, /hail Deacon Gallius. He wanted
people to come with him to OoT and put some undead shipmates of his
out of their misery if he couldn't use the power of Erollisi to save
them. People were gathered, we took the boat to OoT, took another
ghost ship to one of the islands, predictably had to kill the sailors.
After the event, a rogue who'd shown up shortly after I did got an
earring, and I got a hierophant's cloak, which I am still wearing (I
managed to keep roleplaying with the GM in says, but my friends had to
wait a while before they got more than sdfdtrs!!!!#%!!!! out of me) :)

I can relate an odd EQ experience. When I started playing EQ, I played
on the Rallos Zek PvP server. There was a guy playing a DE necro named
Benign, and we started running together, pee-kaying, and doing typical
EQ stuff. In those days, Rallos Zek was totally open PvP, no teams or
anything, but despite that, Benign and I were hard-core about only
peekaying "lighties".

Well time went by, and eventually I decided to try out a different
character class. When I started leveling up this new toon, I lost
touch with my former buddy. One day, I was running through eastern
commonlands when I noticed an obnoxious halfling shouting inanities to
the zone.

Eventually, I tracked this druid down, dueled him, and lost. After we
got through fighting I was talking to the obnoxious druid for awhile,
when the druid suddenly recognizes me as his former killing partner
back when he was playing Benign the necro! So, here we had managed to
encounter each other again, both with completely different toons, and
still were able to identify each other (I guess our role-playing
skills could use some work!).

Now this was kinda odd, but it's not quite over. When the team PVP
servers came out, I pretty quickly fled from Rallos, which had become
a scary place with uber pk's hunting you for your prized gear. I
eventually ended up on Sullon Zek, and guess who also had made the
move there? Yep, the very same Benign, though now he was an enchanter.

The capper to all this is that on the Sullon Zek server there is an
entire unrelated guild called "Benign". My buddy used to joke that
they were his worshippers. I miss that guy. If the pattern holds,
we'll probably virtually meet each other again while playing something
like BF:1942, or EQ2.

First Race War on Rallos Zek:

My first real character was a troll shaman on the Rallos Sek server.
At that time, I didn't know a damn thing about the lay of the land at
all. All my characters up that point had been totally confined to
newbie zones. I had made a human character in freeport at one point,
but I had absolutley no clue how to to travel from freeport to grobb,
or vice versa. I didn't even really have an idea of how many zones
were between these locations. The southern ro desert was a scary
inhospitable place full of red cons, and us newbies didn't go there.
The world was a big scary place back when we were all under level 10.
That was a time when the most common auction heard was:

/auc WTS Mino axe!! 5pp Best 1 hand slash weapon in game!!!!

Anyway, on this particular day, rumors had been circulating all over
the swamp zone of a massive raid on Freeport. All dark races were
being encouraged to march on Freeport and slay all the lighties they
could find. Eventually, there was a mob of about 40 of us newbie
trolls ready to march out, the only problem was nobody knew how to get
to freeport! After much searching, one helpful guy announced that he
could lead us to Freeport, and there was much rejoicing.

The marauding band of trolls set out through the Southern desert of
ro. Imagine if you will, a mass of 40 rank newbies stumbling along,
most of them completely clueless about anything, bumbling through a
zone they've never seen. After about half an hour, we had managed to
move the majority of the "raid" up to the oasis of ro zone line. We
should have turned back then, but we didn't.

Once we entered the Oasis, our helpful guide informed us that the way
to get through the zone, was to follow the left zone wall around, and
keep following the left wall north until the next zone. For those who
don't know, this route will take you through an area known as "the orc
highway". Well, at the time, none of us dumbass trolls had ever heard
of "orc highway" so we cheerfully followed our guides advice, and
marched off.

Well, it didn't take long before some members of the raid strayed too
close to some wandering orcs, and aggroed them. These poor
unfortunates then stared running to the raid mass to try get help,
thereby agroing the orcs onto all the other members of the raid. Some
people in the raid tried to help fight the orcs, some others tried to
run on, some others just ran around like headless chickens screaming
and /yelling. The slaughter didn't take very long. Our entire raid
force was wiped out by a bunch of level 12ish orcs in moments.

Later, as I searched for my corpse amongst the 40 or so other troll
bodies, I couldn't help but wonder if this event would change the
freeport guards opinion of orcs in general. After all, shouldn't those
city guards be grateful to the orcs for ambushing our assault?

P.S.

The great Rallos Zek race war did eventually take place, and it was
certainly an EQ first. The war started between mostly Dark elves and
humans, but as word spread the other reaces started joining the fight.
I can still remember the shouts when our troll/ogre force eventually
recovered, and arrived in North freeport. People were screaming " HOLY
SHIT!!! THE OGRES HAVE LANDED!!!" "60 OGRES ON THE BEACH RUN FOR YOUR
LIVES!!!!" "THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!!" Then our band rushed through the
tunnel to east commonlands at the perfect time to reinforce our DE
brethren who were being forced back into nektulos. It was beautiful.
This horde of monsters swooping down on the backs of the lighties
trying to blockade our DE allies. I recall at one point there was
hundreds of people fighting in East commonlands. It got so intense,
the zones started crashing. We had like the entire population of the
server packed into just a few zones killing each other, it was great.
The battle swayed back and forth, sometimes with lighties advancing
into nektulos, at another time with the darkies falling back from east
freeport into the freeport sewers to regroup before attacking again.
It was truly epic, and I've been playing PvP EQ ever since.

This was the only GM event I took part in as a guide... I was a deckhand
waiting on Spectre Island to kick player butt.

It was fun. I didn't kill anyone- I died quickly. Then I came back in my
true guideself, and rezzed everyone.
