Twice over the weekend I had very close encounters with the Griffins in East
Commonlands and they did not attack me. Now I am somewhat confused as to
exactly what triggers them to attack. Instance number one I was fighting a
Darkweed snake with my pet and helping it out when the Grif appeared to fly
almost over me. Figuring it was too late to run I just kept fighting and
it went on about its business. It did not appear to be chasing or fighting
anyone.
Instance number two in the same zone I was just standing around when I
noticed a rather strange call and wing beat noises coming from behind me. I
turned around and right there was a Griffin! Again it did not seem to mind
sharing the zone with me. I am pretty sure that in both cases I was close
enough to it that it should have attacked me. If it had been a Kodiak I
would have been fighting for sure.
Anyone have any idea what would cause this kind of behavior from them?
They con "looks threateningly at you" to me so perhaps this has something to
do with it? The char is a High Elf Magician. I am definately confused.

Diff griffs con differently. Next time one flies righ over
you, /con it to see how it sees you. Some con "ready to
attack" to me and some /con "Indifferently" and anywhere in
between.

I think their agressiveness was changed in a patch. Not sure though.

yes many giffs have different cons, some have even been indifferent to me,
always con it first and if it says scowls and will attack, run.

I used to run around all of E. Commens with my little Dwarf Paladin without
being attacked once by a griffon. They used to fly over my head, no probs.
So then I go to North Karana, same deal. Well one time when I zoned into
N. Karana, I see the message "you swing at a griffene, and miss" (or
something like that), then i see "you have slain a griffene". The normal
message you get when you zone and inadvertantly hit something.... no exp /
no loot. Well ever since that day EVERY griffene, griffawn, and griffon is
out for my blood!!! I have gotten killed by about 10 of them already. I
HATE IT!!!! DEATH TO THEM ALL!!!

Heck I'd LOVE an amiable griff... maybe it'd consent to
being my pet :)

I found this out the hard way, If your invisable and con say a dark elf
guard, it will say he is indifferent, but when you turn off invisable he
becomes a scowl and starts bashing you.

I've had the same experience with Minotaurs in the Gorge. They've run right by
me (level 8-9 at the time) and not even stopped. Perhaps they were chasing
someone that was invisible, but I dunno!
