I have been told not to bother wilowisps unless I
have magic (either a magic weapon or decent
assault magic.) Being a mere 11th lv Ranger, I
have neither. My question: is there some way of
*making* an enchanted weapons, some "Enchant Iron"
that can be used by smiths? Is there a way to turn
an ordinary short sword in to a magic weapon, if
only temporarily? Is there any way to buy an
enchanted weapon in the Qeynos/Halas/Erudin area
without having to sell my soul to the Lord of
Pain? And if not, is it alright to "wish list"?

Magical weapons aren't really that expensive. A lot of the stuff that is
coming from Velious that drops there is being given away, or sold at the
rate of what you would sell fine steel for to a merchant. You could pick up
one of those for less than 10pp with no problems. Don't pay more. I'm sure
that someone out there has one that they picked up and would be willing to
unload for the 3 to 5 pp that they sell it to the merchant for.

There is also the option of paying very little for short term magical
weapons. Ask a Magician to summon one for you (even low level
Magicians can summon magic weapons, although the higher level Magicians
can summon nicer weapons). These items, like all summoned items, are
No Rent - meaning that they will disappear when you log out. So, you
can get them VERY cheap and play with them for hours. Do this for
awhile until you save up for the weapon you really want.

I'll give that a try. My problem has been I'm saving up for decent armor
(just bought an ordinary short sword, and I'm working on my smithying and
tailor skills, as well) and that is more important right now than sixing
wisps while I can still get experience. Still, my Offence and 1H slashing
are doing pretty well, so even a summoned dagger should work. Any idea of a
going rate? If I shout "5gp for summoned slashing weapon" will I get
ignored or inundated?

My level 9 warrior had the same problem. Go into blackburrow and someone
will sell you a gnoll hide lariat for 3-7 pp or a runed totem staff for
7-10pp. I don't know which if either can be used by a ranger, but they are
cheap and will hit them. I was able to solo most wisps with the gnoll hide
lariat at level 9 (but I'd usually be within an inch of my life if I tried a
yellow one). People are always picking them up of gnolls in blackburrow
though, so if you are limited on cash its the way to go.

Keep in mind that wisps are worth some serious cash for your level (7-
9pp for each Greater lightstone - significantly less for the normal
lightstones - burned out ones are worthless). If you choose not to
take the greater lightstones on the quest to get xp and cash, you can
still sell them for about 7pp (YMMV) to players.

As far as the summoning price, I generally do it for donations, or I
will charge 5gp or 1pp. It depends on my mood and the politeness of
the requestor. I don't know if there's a going rate, since lots of
people write off the summoned weapon thing and just suffer till they
get the weapon they want (not the smartest way to do it, IMO). The
only drawback to No Rent items (besides being temporary - which sets
their price at very low) is that going linkdead can cause you to lose
them as well. If you have lots of LD problems, I'd steer clear. If
not, it's a small investment for a magic weapon.

Not currently. However, low-end magical items aren't hard to come by. Combine
weapons are magical, and fairly cheap to buy used, though they cost a ton new.
High level Magicians can summon any number of magic weapons, assuming that A)
they have any of the summon item spells, and B) you can get them to cast the
spell. If you ask a Magician who's greater than level 29, they should be able
to summon a Sword of Runes. The proc won't help with wisps (Ward Summoned) and
it probably won't go off at your level anyway, but the sword itself has
semi-decent stats. And if you're polite about it, you'll probably get it for
free. (My magician is usually a little startled when someone even asks. At
most, I'd ask for some foraged vegetables or something in exchange, for brewing
practice.) You can also get Gnoll-hide whips from higher-levels in Blackburrow
and Paw, and Tentacle whips from Najena. Both should be relatively cheap, and
Tentacle whips will actually proc when you use them. If you're on an older
server, Bone Bladed Claymores and Polished Granite Tomahawks should be fairly
easy to get as well.

If asked nicely I always am happy to summon a magic weapon for anyone who
needs one. Heck, i'll summon anything for anyone, sometimes it gets lonely
being a mage. :)

An update:

Last night, I was auctioning, "Looking for summoned weapon, any kind, donation
offered" and a kindly Gnome summoned a 2H staff for me. Lovely weapon, doing
16pts a whack... when I was hitting. Unfortunately 2H bashing was the ONE
weapon skill I had not yet invested any time in. With the wisp doing 20 a hit
and hitting three or four times for each of my hits... you can guess what
happened. *sigh* I think I shall practice my weapon proficiency a bit more and
find something better than tattered armor before I retry my search for Greater
Lightstones.

Heh. He probably summoned the best weapon he could. Next time, ask
for a weapon of a type you can use better. It may be weaker, but you
can hunt wisps with weak magic weapons if you're a decent level (8 or
so). Just watch out. They will get help from other wisps. Make sure
to pull them away from the wisp spawn areas so you don't end up with 2
or 3 of them on you at once. That's death on wheels. Also, look
carefully at a wisp before attacking it. Sometimes 2 or 3 of them are
very close to each other and move together, so they can look like a
single wisp if you don't look closely.

Runed Totem Staff - not usable by rangers
Gnoll Hide Lariat - ranger usable

My warrior never had a problem getting a mage to summon a stack of
bandages, arrows, or a weapon for a few gold.
