There are a couple of Skyrim quests that I would like to do, but they
require my having a companion. I have asked several people, but they all
say something like, "I see you already have someone with you." But I don't
have anyone with me. The only being who comes close to that is Shadowmere,
the horse. While he often acts as a companion in battle, and does a fine
job of it, I am not sure he is actually a companion. Any ideas?

Your companion might be back at your house. If you tell them to wait
somewhere and you take a long time to return to them, they'll get fed up
waiting and return to a default location. This may be the place you
recruited them or your house. You have to actually tell them to part
company with you before you're allowed a different one.
I don't think the horses count as companions, but I'm not sure about
Shadowmere.
BTW is it possible to get Shadowmere back after he dies? He got into a
fight with some creature and he died and I don't know if it's possible
to get him back...:(

I do have a companion back at the house, but even she won't come with me.
She also says "I see you have someone with you." She sits around all day
crunching on bread. I'd love to get rid of her, but so far I can't.
And no, if Shadowmere dies, that's it. You can't get him back. I have
repeated some fairly lengthy game sequences by reloading a game before the
death of Shadowmere, just so I can avoid his death as the sequence plays
out. He's that good.

That's probably Lydia. She will stay at your house even if you part
company, so she'll always be there, 'guarding your property'
I can only suggest you've maybe picked up another companion and not
realised it or forgotten. They're probably waiting around somewhere and
you can't remember where they are.
That's a shame about Shadowmere. I thought I could go back to the
location where I got him but nope. Maybe there should be some sort of
quest sequence where you can get him back...;)

Perhaps you are right. I don't recall another companion. Anyway, the game
is winding down for me. I have completed the main quest and am trying to
complete some other unfinished business. I can't decide when to quit, and
whether to choose another race of character and start over again. It might
be sort of fun, knowing what I know now.

I started off as a female Nord warrior called Jora, with a focus on
one-handed weapons, so the Companions quest line suited her fine. I did
this first, along with various side-quests I found along the way. I
decided to side with the Stormcloaks (as befitted her Nord nature) then
decided after wandering about for a while side-questing and doing a
little bit of the mage, assassin and thieves questlines I'd finish the
main quest. After that it was a case of mopping up the assassins and
thieves guild. I decided to leave the mage and bard quests unfinished,
as I didn't want to do everything on my first playthrough, and those
lines didn't suit my char anyway.
I decided to 'retire' when I had forged Daedric armour and got a house
in the Stormcloak stronghold after doing the Stormcloak questline.

When I restart, it'll be as a Khajit thievy type so will be doing things
differently. And I'll try not to let Shadowmere be killed this time...:)
Might actually try and get married this time round. Didn't try it with
Jora as she was a bit of an evil bitch...XO
Really enjoyed Skyrim. best game I've played in years on the PC.

Interesting! I was considering a new game as a Khajit, too. And I agree,
this is the best game I have played in years. I must have spent 5 years off
and on playing all but one of the character rolls in Diablo II. Until
Skyrim that was my favorite of all time. But I think Skyrim may have it
beat. Hard to decide! I'm definitely excited to see Diablo III.
