And then I hit problems. Both my enemies seem to be more powerful
than me, and they dig through to the centre before I get the chance to
claim all the area, or even half of it (and this is with my imps and
researchers speeded up as soon as I get the spell, likewise the people
training.) Now, if I could just claim *all* the area, get into their
corridors and fortify enough to put a trap behind a door, I would be
okay. But I can't, their imps are breaking through in two different
directions (one from the green dungeon, one from the blues - and they're
not fighting, they're allied against me) before I even get the chance,
my bile demons get splatted by lightning before I can re-centre on them
to heal them, and meanwhile a level 7 dragon (green - where the hell did
he come from? I've only had time to train up to level 3, and that's with
my first set of minions) is having my imps for breakfast before I get
the chance to pull them out of combat. I drop my entire army of level 3
dragons and bile demons on him, lose half of them while the warlocks get
as far as the lightning spell, finally nail him with it, and meanwhile
find that the blues have an army of level 6-7-8 bile demons and dragons
waiting for me. Pretty soon, I get driven entirely out of the central
area, usually before I've even got as far as researching the Workshop.
But I dare not hold back on claiming the central area so I can get the
workshop first (to build the traps to stop enemies coming in) as they
will get in first. I've tried heading for the corners (for the
specials), I've tried heading through the middle to spread out in both
directions, and nothing works...
This is with the Gold Edition, by the way (with an AI patch, so
that the enemy is more intelligent and learns the virtue of, for
instance, digging out gold.) Meanwhile, I don't have enough space to put
a treasure room for all the gold I'm mining, so it gets left lying on
the ground for me to either (a) sweep up by hand, thus having to take my
attention off the constant conflict that doesn't stop because their
level 7 dragon is chasing my imps around, which means that *their* imps
can claim whatever they like, or else I let them have it... I did once
make the effort to continue after being driven out of the central area:
I spend *ages* training 11 dragons, 9 warlocks, 5 trolls and 3
mistresses, possibly more, certainly there were no new creatures coming
from the portal and I gave up on hellhounds when I couldn't keep them in
my own dungeon - up to level 10 each (no bile demons, alas, every time I
got a level 1 demon the enemy hit it with lightning faster than I could
heal it, I would take time off to separate my vampires from the
warlocks - they wouldn't train properly anyway - and my bile demon would
be *gone* and there would be another corpse in the graveyard): I even
trained all my imps up to level 5-9 for faster land claiming, I made a
huge scavenger room and *not one* enemy creature joined my side from all
the level 10 creatures working in it, I finally bridged over to the
central area and set all my imps - speeded and concealed - loose
claiming land, and then dropped my invasion force in when the enemy
dropped his. I even spent time nailing all the blue keeper's level 10
bile demons to the floor with lightning, but couldn't make a dent in his
level 10 dragons as they healed themselves. And what happened? The whole
lot were massacred apart from one solitary level 3 imp who made it back
to land. Every time I thought I'd finished them, suddenly a whole load
more creatures would drop in on me because I couldn't claim enough
territory in time and was having to fight on their territory instead of
mine... *sob*
Obviously the main killer in this situation is the level 7 enemy
dragon who turned up right at the start, long before anyone had had time
to actually train creatures up beyond level 3 (or research the Heal
spell, so I could keep my own creatures simply battling him.) Without
that particular dragon, I might have been able to actually keep my imps
in the field and grab and hold the area. And my enemies also seem to
have a shitload more imps than I do, and I bought up to 28 at one stage
(just before setting off the Increase Level) in the desperate hope of
claiming the area fast enough... And on the one occasion I *did* manage
to claim the area, the damn fools wouldn't fortify the walls even when I
left the gold untagged, they just wandered around doing nothing until
the enemy broke through the walls - with the level 7 dragon that I'd
been able to *see* (with Sight of Evil) but not nail (as I hadn't
researched Lightning yet), and a bunch of other bile demons and dragons,
and loads of enemy imps, enemy imps don't actually seem to be scared of
combat the way mine are, but hang around claiming territory no more than
two squares away...
So can anybody help? What am I doing wrong?
Jonathan.
Really? I prefer to bring in a Warlock/Wizard/Dragon if I can, so I can get
a good head start on the researching.

Has a walk through.
I have finished the game a few times, but can never remember all the levels.
My guess is that where the gems are, you build a treasury, then a lair and
a hatchery and a library and a training room. Reinforce your walls by
dropping the
imps by them, slap them as well to make them work faster get studying,
when a bridge is build over to you drop an imp on it, get hime to claim it,
then sell it
and drop some of the enemy into the fire.
I think with this level, I built out ffrom the top, and walked/tunnelled
around
to the left.
Any help? Is this the level where you have a group of rooms stuck togeather
horozontialy about 1/3 of the way down the screen (well near the top anyway)

Plus warlocks get upset if you slap them.
I had thought about trying to go through the game again
by transferring in a different level 10 character except
the vampire into level 20 of course!

Jonathan.
I always choose a level 10 vampire (if its available) over any other
creature, even a level 10 horned reaper. In my opinion, the level 10 vampire
is THE best all round creature in DK1. He can research, scavenge and also
fight very well.
