None. These games are horrible with joysticks. Our way of playing is a
mouse/keyboard combo. In fact, most of the industry plays this way. A few
keyboarders, but the bulk are mouse/keyboard.

I'm not an expert, but if you GOTTA have a joystick, try to get one with
lots of buttons you can program for different functions, since there are
SO many in Duke and Quake. A four button gamepad might be alright, but
you'll have to do a lot of reaching for them keys to look around or
switch weapons.
You'll probably get lots of recommendations to use a mouse, and rightly
so, it is THE most flexible way to play the game. All the experts use
mice, and you did ask for expert opinions, eh? :)
Trackballs, such as the Logitech Trackman Marble is probably the next in
line below a mouse.
Next is keyboard only, and at the bottom of the list...you guessed
it...begins with a "j" ends in "k" and rhymes with "joystick"...
Although, what I would like to see is someone that uses rudder pedals,
throttle and a steering wheel! With games like Shadow Warrior that let
you drive....nahhhhhh!

Have you played it with a mouse/keyboard combo then? =)

One thing you have to keep in mind is that mouse use is not "using the
mouse", but using the mouse WITH the keyboard. When I first started
playing with the mouse, I thought you used only the mouse. Moving
forward and backward totally blew! I was like "what the--?! How the
HELL can someone play this way?!? So I went back to my Gamepad for a
year or two. Then, I found out the proper way to play with a mouse.
You use the mouse for turning and the normal movement keys on the
keyboard to move around forward and backward.
A good source for playing with a mouse is the Facility Deathmatch
Training Manual for Doom2, written by BahdKo. Yeah, it says it's for
doom and for deathmatch, but that don't matter. A 3d game is basically
a 3d game--from Wolf3d to Duke3D to Quake2 and beyond, they all play
pretty much the same. The stuff you learn from this manual will open up
new roads for you where you can think for yourself as far as comfortable
keyboard configuration go.
You can get it at:
ftp.cdrom.com/pub/doom2/deathmatch/facility.zip
...you won't believe what's to be learned here if you're not too
familiar with how the mouse is used in a 3d game.

I hope that doesn't mean you're going to discontinue joystick support. I use
a four-button joystick to play Duke, and I like it just fine. I don't see
how anyone play using the mouse.

I use a joystick, so I guess I'm not an "expert"!! Mine is a Cyclone 3D; 17
programmable buttons, hat switch, the whole nine yards. Fifty bucks at Best Buy
and I love it. I've heard that some people have trouble installing the
software, but my installation went smoothly.
Hope this helps!
Of course, some of the bugs in Duke are a pain, like the "wall kill" bug
in Dukematch.
But what I'm asking about here is the other bugs. Like the one in Holly
where you can get behind the door coming in off the street to the
theater and "warp" to behind the red key door. Are those bugs
intentional?
I started wondering how you could finish Holly so fast, but I found that
if I used that "bug" to jump behind the red door, I could finish it
really fast.
