8th revision, 29/3/94
Hi all! :)
(And welcome, if you are a newcomer to Doom and this newsgroup!)
(EXTRA EXTRA! Read all about it! Editors, etc., now available! See later...)
Introduction:
-------------
Doom is a complex game and has thrown up many questions. Like most subjects,
there is a Doom FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) available. This is written
by Hank Leukart (ap...@cleveland.freenet.edu) and you can email him for a
copy. This file is also available from me.
However, to include ALL the information relevant to Doom in the FAQ would
make the FAQ very large indeed. I have already had problems emailing it to
several people because of its present size. Therefore, I present here a list
of text help files and demo lmps (if you don't know what lmp demo's are, ask
me for the .lmp demo help file) that answer some of the questions which
really need to be explained at a level of detail which is impractical to
achieve in the FAQ without making it too big.
Contents of this post:
----------------------
This message contains a summary of the help files available from the
Doom Help Service (erm... in other words... me. :D).
If you want a file, just send me an email message and I will send it
to you.
Most people ask for the FAQ. As a matter of course, I usually send
them the cheats list and .lmp demo making information as well. The
responses I've had suggest this has been a good move so far.
(NOTE: some of the files that are available from me are available as a zip
file. Currently, this means all the files except the Doom utilities and
lmps. This zip file can now be ftp'd from ocf.unt.edu. It is in the
/pub/doom/text directory. The files are doomhelp.zip and the associated text
README is doomhelp.txt (it is well worth getting the .txt file - it is
similar to this post, except that it says which files are which in the zip
archive, etc. Also, if you want ALL the help files, but don't have ftp, then
I can email you a uuencoded copy of this zip file instead of sending each
file individually. Up to you! I update the two files periodically. If you
want to be sure of getting the latest version of a particular help file,
email me).
From some of the mail I've been getting, I've decided it's important to say
what information I do NOT have, as well as the stuff I _do_ have. I do NOT
have info on: making .lmps of netDoom sessions, cheats in netDoom and
information on modem init strings, etc. However, what I _do_ have is...
1) The Doom FAQ v5.5, by Hank Leukart. I'm emailing it to people in
order to take some of the load off of Hank.
2) A complete list of the Doom cheat codes and how to use them. Also
included is a summary of controls that you can use in Map mode, and
how to use the berserker box when you already have the chainsaw.
3) A step by step guide on how to ftp shareware Doom from an ftp site.
Especially useful if you're unfamiliar with ftp. This file contains
a list of ftp sites to choose from (the same list that is in the
Doom FAQ). It also shows how to install the game once you get the ftp'd
file.
4) A complete step by step guide to making .lmp demo recordings of
your Doom sessions, includes example command lines to demonstrate
the various parameters. This file does NOT, however, contain
information about making .lmps of modem/network playing sessions.
if anyone wishes to send me a complete description of how to do
this, feel free to email me.
5) A file containing useful hints and tips on updating Doom v1.1 to
Doom v1.2 using the 1.2 patch. This won't solve everybodys problems,
but it will cover quite a few of the most common ones.
6) A file containing some notes and information on v1.2 compared to
v1.1. This does NOT describe new features - it merely covers things
such as saved-game compatibility, etc.. It has a description of the
PS/2 psycho-mouse problem and some ideas on how to solve it.
7) A file that shows how to run Doom under Windows. Some people have
found that running Doom under Windows cures the PS/2 mouse problem.
How universal a solution this is I do not know, but the file is
available if anyone wants it.
8) - A .lmp demo of E1L9 secret level. It's not *fantastic*, but it
_does_ show how to get to the tops of the five pillars). One of
these days I'll do a better one... :)
9) - A .lmp demo of E1L1 showing where the new v1.2 secret is. Major
spoiler! If you can't find the new secret, then this could be a
last resort (it also shows a seargent getting shot UP a flight of
stairs! Dead funny to watch - pun intended... :)).
10) A spoilers file. I've only just started this, so quite very small. The
FAQ has an extensive list of secrets, so this file is designed to answer
some of the other questions that occur about the game. Some of it is my
own writing, some extracted from old posts to a.g.d.. So far it covers
the following questions:
1. Where is the entrance to the decret level in E2?
2. How can I kill the Cyberdemon at the end of episode 2?
3. How can I get into the secret room to the right of the blue key
in E2L2?
4. I seem to be missing a secret in E2L2. Any idea where it might be?
5. How do I do E1L3? (this actually covers a whole range of questions
concerning E1L3, and is actually an excellent article by Paul
Robinson <PA...@TDR.COM>.
11) A list of each of the names of the various levels in each episode. A
useful little reference! This should help reduce the number of 'I wish I
could remember the level names...' comments on a.g.d! :D
(the following are various things I've pulled off the doom ftp site, namely
ocf.unt.edu. This should help those who can't ftp)
12) DEU v5.0 - Doom level editor, registered version only!
13) RanDOOM v1.6 - Doom level randomiser (does this work with the
shareware version? Somebody tell me please! I don't
have time to check).
14) DMAUD v1.1 - Doom sound editor. Extract/replace sounds.
15) GMOUSE - Mouse driver. May help those with PS/2 mouse troubles.
16) DMGRAPH v1.0 - Doom graphics editor.
17) MegaWAD - This is a zip file that constitutes a whole bunch of
PWAD files that people have done. Currently, it includes
DIAMOND, NASTY, EW-E1L1, E2M8PAT, E2M9MH and JEFF-1-2.
More will be added later. I have only tried out 'NASTY'
so far, and I thought it was really good - an excellent
re-hash of E1L1. It really makes you realise how much
you do a level based on memorising where things usually
are! BTW, The whole uuencoded package comes to about
177K, so most people should have no trouble receiving it
via email; besides, I can always split it for those who
do encounter problems.
End of Available Help File List
The Doom Help Service has sent some or all of the above info to people in
the following countries (this'll give you an idea as to how much we're all
Doomed! I'm only doing this list as a kind of demographic lark about. And
maybe some of you will find it interesting anyway... :))...
Australia,
Canada,
England,
Finland,
France,
Germany,
Hawaii,
Japan,
New Zealand,
Poland,
Portugal,
Scotland,
Spain,
The Netherlands,
U.S.A..
I've actually had email concerning Doom from many other places (eg.
Tasmania! You know who you are...), but the above list contains just those
places I've actually sent some of the help files to.
Number of people helped so far: 103
'finger' did not work on quite a few people or did not give enough info
to derive a source nation/state, so there are no doubt many countries
missing from this list. Maybe at some point I'll email them all asking
where they are. Could be interesting to see how far Doom is spreading!
Now quit readin' and go kick some imp butt! :D
Ian.
PS. Don't forget that a zipped library of all the above files (except the
lmp's) is available on ocf.unt.edu in /pub/doom/text as doomhelp.zip
and doomhelp.txt. Bye all... :)
