It is a shame more people aren't using this site, I have no
problems getting there, getting what I need (except hot off
the editor wads). Thanks for the site, it is getting used.

Since OCF is going down will it be possible to upload things to this site? I
just tried and got an access denied message. (maybe I'm just not fated to get
my level onto the net, I acn't seem to get through to wuarchive either.)

Ignore this (boy do I feel like an idiot) I just couldn't find the incoming
directory. I couldn't spell "can't" either. Ok so its been a bad week, so sue
me. (or just ignore anything I say, that would work too) Enough babbling.
Signing off.

160k? That's no level, that's a freakin' episode!

OCF.UNT.EDU is down permanently, which stinks. Please e-mail me your wad!
You'll be seeing more of these in the coming weeks. Like Eddie's PWAD, and
several others, people are building large PWADs.
I am "days" away from completing a > 200k PWAD, probably will top out at ~250k,
modeled after an office building. Initial reviews are very positive overall.
I'm not tooting my horn; I prefer to avoid saying "Gee my PWAD's great but you're
not getting it yet" kinds of things; please don't take it that way. Just saying
that there are some biiig PWADs coming.
:)

Anyone have a complete URL or site name:/path for me?

Chris, the speed of the WAD has to do with the amount of information visible
at any one point in time. The size of the WAD overall should only affect
the the time it takes the DOOM engine to load the level into memory; this is
the time it takes to START the game. Once you're moving, the size of the PWAD
does not affect the speed in any significant way. Early reviews of my large
Pwad show no slowdown on 486/33's, which have shown slowdown on smaller PWADS.
Sorry to trounce your opinion!
Size of the wad alone means nothing, I agree with you. If the large size is
one effect of the well-thought-out level, then it might mean a lot to leave it
large. Righto?
- Jonathan
I guess just some of the huge pwads that had the major slowdowns also were very
complex and had a lot of transparent sidedefs, which I _know_ slows doom down.
Of course, if a bigger level means better layed out...more power to ya. :)

Thanks. It's been a long time since I've seen such a level of individual
enthusiasm and sharing of ideas, code, and information. Since this
started I've been reading books on virtual reality systems and digital
warping (texture mapping) theory. It's a refreshing change of pace
from the dry (but profitable) business oriented software with which
I earn my living.
I think it's obvious to all of us that virtual reality is an emerging
art form and will probably be the next billion-dollar industry. Cutting
off OCF was naive in the extreme and I find it ironic that it happened at
an educational institution. It's supposed to start there, not end there.

Let's not forget all those monsters who must be continually checked for
line-of-sight to the player and whose movements are updated even when they
are not visible.
Whoa Whoa whoa everybody.
Before you read this: please note:
(1) I am a *major* doom fan
(2) I am not affiliated with OCF, or the new ftp site.
I disagree with you, Scott, in saying that cutting off OCF was naive
in the extreme. I would think the reason they disabled the doom access was
because of system resources. If the host that had the doom directory was on the
OCF backbone, then all systems not separately bridged off of the backbone will
suffer the addition of all the traffic us internetters add. There is only
so much bandwidth on their ethernet. More traffic = slower response time for
all users on their network on the same segment.
Even if their internet ftp site was bridged (filtered) from their
main backbone, the host may be the same computer that students use to
compile their programs, and do other school related things. If it was the
same computer, (or if this was an NFS accessed drive from other computers
on campus,) everybody suffers a performance degredation. Just think..
you're a student working on your senior project, trying to get it to
compile, on OCF.UNT.EDU (or whatever the host was... rest in peace),
and 30 people are currently downloading doomv1.2.zip. Performance
really goes down, and everybody complains, which is probably how they noticed
it in the first place.
I would bet that it was taken down for these reasons, as opposed to
some adminstrator over there saying: "Hey, there's a shareware game on
OCF?? Shut it all down!!!!!"
Geez. I'm not really sure why I'm defending their decision, because
I wish it was still up... but saying it was naive of them, or worse, is
really incorrect.
