I found "Zanpack" on the DOOM wiki (search on the doom wiki yourself
if you want to try it) and this makes no freaking sense to me.
I start the game, select my difficulty setting, the game starts...and
I immediately die. There's a Cyberdemon in the area and he croaks
instantly too. I hit the Space Bar...and die again. Like
immediately. I'm not being hit by anything, etc, I'm just dying and
melting.
So, I have to ask...What the fuck, man?? Why would anyone do
something like this??

I've heard of ZanZan before but otherwise know nothing about it so I can
only take guesses. However, since the thing was apparently quite highly
regarded, it is unlikely to have behaved that way for other players.
It is more likely it is incompatible with the engine you are trying to
use it with. The page says it requires an old version of an engine named
ZDoomGL (which the download claims to include; ZDoomGL itself was
abandoned a long time ago.)
Perhaps the "fixed" version ported to GZDoom linked from the page above
might be worth a try? (On the other hand, the comments on its /idgames
page don't suggest the update was very successful...)
