Please, people! I keep seeing all these new WAD files coming out and
** I ** can't get the damned things! Not all of us can do ftp'ing
or the like so it's next to impossible for us to get them! There's
a whole .BINARIES area set aside for WAD's and yet NOBODY for WEEKS has
had the brains to post anything there!! Sheesh!

PLEASE POST TO ALT.BINARIES.DOOM!

One problem is that I have access to alt.games.doom, this group, yet no
access to alt.binaries.doom.

I wish that they would create a comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.doom(.binaries)
newsgroup that more people could access.

Meanwhile, I just finished creating a pretty good WAD. May I post it here?

Yeah, well, it's not a coincidence. Putting a binaries subgroup UNDER
the main discussion group is pointless, because by default, the news
hierarchy would have everyone carrying it anyway. In case the point
hasn't gotten through yet, the reason people don't want binaries in the
discussion groups is that they DON'T WANT THE VOLUME. The reason your
site doesn't get alt.binaries.doom is that someone up stream DOESN'T
WANT THE VOLUME. Wishing everyone would just end-run around the wishes
of the people who pay to take the feeds is both selfish and futile.

>Meanwhile, I just finished creating a pretty good WAD. May I post it here?

No, upload it to one of the FTP sites or post it on a DOOM BBS. Your
WAD may be good but it's not DOOM discussion! Only tiny binaries should
appear here (like a 1K file that shows how to make a door or something).

Is this necessary? He is asking a question and you insult him.

isn't that what it is for?

I didn't insult him, I insulted the practice of wishing people would
end-run around the volume decisions of news admininstrators. The insult
only applies to him if that's what he was doing, and I have no way of
reading his mind.

"It"? I don't know what "it" refers to in the above sentence, so I
don't know if that is what "it" is for. If "that" means posting big
binaries, and "it" is the discussion newsgroup alt.games.doom, then no,
"that" is not what "it" is for. Beyond that, you'll have to explain.

I agree with Tom. Do not post binaries here. It really narfs off people who
have to pay for their access, and (as Tom says) might persuade some
not-so-nice sysadmins to drop a.g.d. from their site.

Anyway, enough gloom! I have just now posted twenty six PWAD files to
alt.binaries.doom, which should slowly spread their way to the various far
flung corners of this dirt ball of a planet. :) That should keep all of you
with no ftp access quiet for a while. :D

I may be posting up to another thirty later today (I'm just about beat I'm
afraid, so it won't be until this evening when I can play test the other 30
to see if they're any good that I'll post some more).

I also have the 26 PWADs I posted available via email, though if you can get
alt.binaries.doom, please wait a bit before filling my mail box with pleas
for PWADs. If you DO want to email me, then PLEASE read my post coming up
soon on the return of The Doom help Service (and definitely read the notes
N1, N2 and N3 towards the end of that post).

Bye! :)

Ian.

If you don't have access to alt.binaries.doom, just ask your sysadmin to
subscribe to it. Its not that hard, and i really doubt he's going to say
anything about it. Every ssyadmin i've dealt with have been great, they are
people too.

OK. I'll give it a shot. I just placed "Outpost 21" in the binaries
group. That's what it's there for, right? We'll see how it goes.
(There's no way all 150+ PWADS could be posted there uuencoded. News sites
would blow that group away real quick.)

Please don't. I'm sure you have either FTP or EMail access. If you have
FTP access, use ocf.unt.edu. If you can only do mail, use a ftpmailer.
Thanks.
