I'm trying to use DOOM in a full-screen DOS session in OS/2 2.1.
My machine's configuration is as follows:

486 66MHz processor
8 MB RAM
PAS 16 BASIC sound card running in SoundBlaster emulation
Genoa local bus video card

The music score is right on, but there doesn't seem to be any sound effects.
Has anyone run into this problem! I have a inkling it's incomplete SoundBlaster
emulation by PAS. Other than that, version 1.1 seems to run quite nicely in OS/2 :-)

E-mail comments accepted.

Why not just exit OS/2 and run Doom directly from Dos? That way it works
perfectly, and with zero time spent tinkering around to make it work with
OS/2.

1) Perhaps they want to do something with their computer without saving
their DOOM game and quitting to dos. Things Like:

Reading the email that arrived while they were busy with a
couple of shotgun wielding Mutants.

Check their bank balance to see if they can afford to order the
registered version THIS week.

Run two or three more copies of DOOM at the same time and flip
between them to examine subtle differences between the
graphics in the different episodes of the registered version.

Switch to the drive where Wuarchve is NFS mounted and check
for any new Doom patches/utilities.

Check on their Zmodem download from a local BBS.

Make some single pass copies of some 2.88 MB floppies for
a friend.

Take a peek at the online FAQ for a hint, (or a cheat code)

2) Because some people don't own a licence of MS-DOS and would never
dream of spending money on an ancient single tasking OS.

3) Because it dosen't take any time 'tinkering around' with OS/2 to
get it to run. Some people have found that they have to do
change some settings to get it to run correctly under OS/2, but
if you'll notice, there are a whole lot of people who are having
trouble running it under MS-DOS too. With OS/2 if you have
problems, you click on a few settings boxes and try again. In
MS-DOS, you manually edit your startup files and reboot a lot,
usually making it impossible to run your other programs without
changing your configuration back and rebooting again...

I'll be the first one to admit OS/2 isn't a perfect OS by any means,
but don't ask people to downgrade to MS-DOS.

OS/2, unlike Windows, is actually an operating system. You cannot exit it "to
DOS" any more then you can exit DOS itself. I missed the first part of this
thread, but I run DOOM in DOS fullscreen and it runs as fast and as well as when I
boot the machine up from my DOS partition and run it from there. If you want to
repost or E-mail me, I may be able to help you figure out what is going wrong.
