Definately go for Descent, I can't say enough good things about the
game. I only partially agree with your assessment of ROTT. It is
technologically inferior to DOOM, with its 90 degree angles and all, but
once you get into it it can be pretty fun. Try using the cheat codes, you
can warp to the 2 secret levels that are really cool.

MK> My two cents...I like Heretic better than Doom, because if the
non-standard weapons an foes. Its cool to duck hatchets flying at you and
fighting mythical beaties....Descent is OK, but I hate the startup
screens and I can't save a game...or can I? The graphics are a little
sloppy, I wish it was a little higher resolution.
ROTT is a joke. The graphics are shit, the foes come at you like
marionettes on the TV show Thunderbirds....really fast vertical moves,
like puppets...Typically stupid Doom copying...Apogee, get a clue. ID has
done this already, and better. I've already erased it.

ROTT: Too much hype and not nearly enough to back it up. Good weapons,
crappy levels. Nice try, but not close to Doom.
Heretic: Well, all it is is Doom with flying, inventory, and look
up/look down, among other neat features. So its just a little better
than doom, but still better.
Doom 2: Rules. Has PWAD support and ability to alter files and levels.
Descent: CRAP. I have no idea how you can like this game. Its the
slowest and most boring out of all the above. You blow up maybe 3
different kind of ships with 'neato' lasers. You get 'laser levels'
(which only goes up to 4) and etc. The turning speed is pathetic, and
I'm sure deathmatch mode would be pretty stupid. All the levels are a
buncha hallways, and the deathmatch winner would be the first person to
press the fire button. Every level has a whole ton of words to read
(does anybody actually read this crap?). Good idea, not very well
implemented.

There must be something wrong with your machine setup. I run Descent on one of
my school's DEC PCs 486DX/33, in maximum detail, and it is as fast as DOOM. The
only hangup is during toggle between map and screen: not only does it take a
second to toggle but the action apparently stops while you are on automap (is
there a follow-on mode?).

I agree; I have a 486DX2/66 (8 meg RAM), and Descent was INCREDIBLY
slow. Just waiting for the game to load the graphics seemed to take
forever... what ARE the minimum requirements for this game?

I have to agree on this one - but I'm not surprised considering the

Yea, it's Doom with some additional features. Personally, I think
that's pretty great. Not ground breaking, but a good way to blow
an afternoon.

Doom with a great shotgun. Doom II is better than Doom, but they
are both great.

I first tried Descent on a 486-66, and it ran fine. I'll be using it
on a 90mhz pentium tonight, and it should only get better. I like the
game at first try, but getting airsick is even easier than with Doom!
I had no speed problems at all.

Try strafing left while turning right, and vice versa. Turning is MUCH
faster this way.

This statement is more likely to apply to Doom than to Descent. See my
other post.

Bryant, I am severely tempted to flame you to high heaven here, but I'll
refrain. A screenful of words is NOT a reason to bash a game so heavily.

It is obvious in playing Doom deathmatch/watching AVG lmps/etc that
there is a lot of skill involved. Its obviously not an easy game to get
really good at. It is possible to get pretty good at Descent, but once
you hit a certain level you can't get much better (much easier to
achieve than in Doom).
>I look forward to a more fair, unbiased review someday.
Probably true. But with all these 'Descent is much better than Doom and
is 12 months earlier than Quake and is better than it anyway' type
comments I had to say something. I've played pretty much every Doom
clone there is and nothing beats Doom itself. Descent is good in 1
player, even though the levels are mazelike, but I don't think it can
compete with Doom/Quake in deathmatch. I will be trying it with 4
players in a few days.. I just think that the levels are too big to
play in, and the tunnels are too small, and the weapons are sucky (laser
level maxxes at level 4, for example).
D>>Descent: CRAP. I have no idea how you can like this game. Its the

I found it easier to just adjust the joystick sensitivity...And I
thought the old "Defender" game had too many buttons...

Not quite - in Descent, most of the levels consist of some rooms, linked
by long hallways. There's not much room to dodge in hallways. Plus
there's the little matter of the actual working "homing missiles" (which
I like, actually, but they would make for short deathmatches). In DOOM
(and DOOM2 and HERETIC) the levels tend to be more complex, with more
"terrain features" to conceal yourself in (pillars, around corners,
behind half-walls, etc.) and if someone starts shooting at you, in a
DOOM(/2/HERETIC) level there's usually plenty of options as to which way
to dodge. You don't get much choice in a long hallway...
Mind you, this is more a problem with how the levels are constructed,
not with the game engine or concept.
D>> Every level has a whole ton of words to read
>>(does anybody actually read this crap?).
D>Bryant, I am severely tempted to flame you to high heaven here, but I'll

I'd have to agree here - the "tons of words" consist of a paragraph or
so of a description of the place you're going and a hint at how
difficult the level is going to be. You have the option of just
bypassing the deluge o' words if you want. I didn't find them any more
bothersome than the DOOM2 "every 6 or so levels" messages that come up.
D>I look forward to a more fair, unbiased review someday.

I haven't TRIED deathmatch in DESCENT yet, but I get the impression it
won't stay interesting as long as the DOOM/2/HERETIC ones do, but
probably last longer than I imagine WC Armada's "Dogfight" option does.
(NOTHING to dodge behind, NOTHING to hide in, NOTHING to pop out of from
nowhere firing BFG's...sounded more like "space jousting" to me...)
Final nitpick - in descent, I thought the vulcan cannon was pathetic.
Sounded neat, and the concept was good, but the amount of ammo it burns
up compared to the damage it does.

I just played through ROTT, and thought it was moderately fun. Nowhere
near as good as Doom, but then there are a lot of things in life that
aren't as good as Doom and are still fun to do. :X) Now I have a copy
of Heretic and am about halfway through the game, and I think it is
FANTASTIC! The technology may not have changed much from Doom, but I
think the level layouts, the graphics, sound effects, music and game
design are all fabulous. It has tons of atmosphere, and I'm really
getting into it. (Of course, part of this may be that I'm a total nut
for swords & sorcery!)

Try using a faster video card (i.e. something with a Tseng ET 4000 chip.
This chip is great for DOS and cheap too!) FYI, the Diamond Stealth 32 uses the
ET4000 W32 chip. IT flies in Winders too!

Runs really smooth on my machine too Dx2/66 8megs ram. The turning is
slower than doom, but I think it's a little more realistic. The only time
I've seen people that can turn as fast as you can in doom, they were on
skates. I haven't tried Descents modem play yet, but other than that the
game is pretty cool. not as good as Dark forces though, but that's
another story. :)
