If you don't know what this stuff is about, you may read a complete explanation
in alt.games.doom or in the file
infant2.sphs.indiana.edu:/pub/doom/incoming/dht-exams/DHT.ZIP
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is my own exam file. As far as I can tell, after issuing 21 challenges, I
am the first to post a completed exam -- this is a bit worrying, because it will
look like I made it easier for myself... :-)
Inside DM-FMS.ZIP you'll find lmps of E1M3, E2M5, E3M9 on UV with 100% secrets
and 100% kills; plus one free interpretation lmp which is doing a whole level (a
modified E1M4) using ONLY a rocket launcher, with no medikits or stimpacks
around.
The file is being posted to
infant2.sphs.indiana.edu:/pub/doom/incoming/dht-exams/DM-FMS.ZIP
and to alt.binaries.doom in uuencoded form.

This whole DOOM Master thing sounds alright, but where are the rewards for a
deathmatch? If a DOOM Master is challenged and beaten, am I then a Master?
Just wondering, because that is my area of expertise.
Blue Skies!

Well, no :-) The only way to earn a title is to pass the exam. You earn a title
because you proved you could beat a specific challenge (completing a number of
levels under specific conditions, from which we accept to extrapolate that you
could do all 27 levels under these conditions).
Obviously it is conceivable that after this someone else may once beat you in a
deathmatch challenge, but this does not *prove* that he would definitely be up
to the same exam challenge as you did. There is certainly some correlation, but
certainly not an implication. Thus, beating a decorated player at deathmatch,
while certainly a good performance, does not and should not imply that one gets
the title without passing the exam.
Besides there is another marginal point, which is that the exam stuff has been
designed to be very easily and unquestionably verifiable by anybody. I can only
claim to be a DM because I can show you the exam file, with authentication dance
and all. If I claimed to be a DGM (which I certainly am not, at least for the
time being), you could very well ask to see my exam file and it would then be
obvious that I'm cheating. So the titles are worth something because they can be
authenticated by anybody who wants to. You don't have to trust any central
authority or committee. "Proving" that you have beaten a DM would be much more
cumbersome.
Having said that, if you're awfully good at deathmatch, if you challenge
decorated players you will certainly find some worthwile opponents! And if you
win against them, so much the better -- you can then be proud of having beaten a
DM (or whatever) -- and this might even encourage you to take the exam yourself!
:-)
