I can't seem to get any sound effects out of my ATI stereo F/X. I can
get the doom theme music to play, but no good bang-bang noises. I've
checked the stupid stuff. (volume, interrupts, etc). Anyone have
a problem like this? the ATI is (in theory) soundblaster compatible.

Well, I have an actual, true-blue SoundBlaster card, and I have the same
problem. I only get the music, no sound effects (unless I use the pc
speaker). :( The setup program was absolutely no help at all. Is it a
bug, or am I missing something (I saw a previous reference to SFX.EXE?
I don't have that program. Should I, or is that ATI specific?)

I have a ThunderBoard (SB clone) and also only get music.

I had this problem. Either the SFX wouldn't work at all, or they'd die
after a few seconds. Someone somewhere recommended reducing the PC speed
from 33MHz to 8MHz whilst Doom is loading, and then switching to 33MHz
when the demo starts. This seems to work (most of the time :-|).

This is is 486/33 with SBPro, BTW.

Regards, Phil.

Try different IRQ channels. It worked for me on another game (Comanche)

No, I don't want to do that. My sound card works fine with Windows and
other games, and if I start screwing with the IRQs now, I'll end up having a
conflict with everything else. Since the card works with other games
such as Castle Wolfenstien and Blake Stone, it seems to me there is a
problem with Doom.

Well, not saying the problem isnt with Doom, but you should give
it a try to see if it fixes the problem.

I have a Gravis Ultrasound. The first time I played doom1_1 both music and sound
fx worked. They have never worked since and I haven't changed either the setup of
the Ultrasound or doom, as far as I can remember. I tried to reinstall doom but
that didn't help.

Well, I just downloaded doom v1.1 yesterday and the sound problems
disappeared. I guess that's what I get for using a <1.0 version. Now
I'm happy - I can hear guts being wrenched out and screams of agony.
Life is good.

I solved the problem. If I disable the Sound Blaster compatability program SBOS
the Ultrasound plays music and fx.
