You should probably look into getting a faster video card, like a wt32
based chipset or something. Also, check your card to make sure that it's
not set to 1 wait state or something like that. It should be smooth as
glass on your system. I know it is on mine, (486 DX266 with VLB graphics
with a Pro Audio Studio in 16 bit mode, as well as a turtle beach midi card
pushing out the midi sound)

In-fact, the graphics are too smooth on the machine I run it on (thats a good
thing though).

Dammit! Descent is choppy on my 486/66 also with details up on the highest.
I don't know what kind of 486 could run Descent 'as smooth as glass' but
the only thing i tried (that worked too) was freeing up more memory and
..overclocking my chip to 80mhz. ;)

It is *VERY* smooth on my 486DX2/66.
I have a PCI based ATI Graphics Xpression, and 16MB RAM.

I posted earlier that it was a slow-down because I was using EMM386 in my
config.sys. I took it out and all is smooth and wonderful!
