When a map editor comes out, and other utilities (like for Wolf) for DOOM
are out how are the modified levels going to be distributed between people?

To exchange sound effects (DMAUD) I guess you could zip the sound you are
using and create a batch file to automatically do the extraction/insertion
on someone elses machine.

Will this be possible with level editors as well (I know there are one yet)?
seems that some of the file transfers are going to be getting pretty big.
Obviously you can't swap the WAD file or post it anywhere, since the V0.99
executable works with the registered WAD (I'm using it) if someone made
all new levels and posted it then someone who hasn't bought the game can
get it for free (illegal!). Maybe I'm missing something basic and if so
please enlighten me :-)

That's exactly why ID isn't releasing the specs for the levels; level
editors will most certainly hurt the game's sales.
Maybe I'm missing something here, because people here keep asking about
level editors. I don't mean to be obnoxious, but have you
guys tried reading the readme.exe file that should be in the doom zip? ID
clearly states at the beginning of the readme file that they WON'T be
releasing the specs that would facilitate the creation of a level editor.
Has ID changed its plans or something??

Here's the system I came up with, although I don't have my editor working
just yet:

My editor will output a .DU (DOOM Utilities) file which contains only
the things you changed in the .WAD file. You can then install this into
a registered version .WAD file using a little command line utility called
DUINST.EXE When I modify a .WAD file I don't erase anything, I just add
to it. This will allow you to restore any modified .WAD file just by
running RESTORE.EXE on it.

So to distribute any changes, you include the .DU file and the DUINST
and RESTORE programs.

I thought that only applied to the shareware version.

I'd just like to mention that I'm also going to be adding stuff to the
end of the .WAD file... so if your RESTORE program removes your changes,
it hopefully will be able to update the pointers to data placed after it...

I'm afraid the .WAD will likely fill up with abandoned data
chunks... unless someone writes a garbage collection program...

Hmm.. I seem to remember a promo-statement made by id along with the
slideshow over a year ago saying that they would realease *all*
documentation/specs and even parts of the source code.....

Am I confused or *have* id changed their plans?
