does anyone know the entire story behind the doom game? i heard it went
something like this guy exploring a moonbase, dying, then going to the
shores of hell, and then to hell itself. just curious if anyone knew.

as for the game itself, it's awesome, and it's spread like rapid-fire around
here.

Take a look in your local readme file (it's executable) in your DOOM
directory. It provides you with the backgrounds for this game.

You are serious are you?

It could run up to 50-70 parts.
I could do it myself but, only on several conditions:

1: There must be more than 10 people who want it posted.
2: Nobody else is posting it.

For people at RIT, please send me E-Mail and I can meet you and provide
you with the game personally (only on campus). Otherwise, outside RIT, send me
E-Mail, and I'll see if it warrant posting DOOM on here.

Oh yeah, I'm not posting until v.1.2 comes out.

It was recently posted to comp.binaries.ibm.pc (or whatever the group name
is now).

Surely it is available via FTP. Can anyone help me out with an address
and such? Thanks in advance...

The ShareWare version includes a file called README.EXE; if you
execute this program, it will give you the entire background info
(2 -3 screens worth), as well as some additional info re. what the game
is all about.

Just read the Readme file on the disk. It explains EVERYTHING about the why's
and the how's of your predicament...

The story is essentially this, paraphrased from the manual:
You're sitting around on your butt on this moon, having been transferred here
after busting your co in the entire body when he yelled at you for not obeying
an order to shoot on civilians. The military is doing experiments with
dimensional gates on two moons, throwing objects from one gate on one moon and
watching them come out the other on the other moon. One day you get a message
from the first moon that things are going haywire and strange things are
pouring out of the gates. Then the second moon disappears from the sky. Your
team goes in, taking all the heavy machinery, leaving you outside to guard the
door. After a few hours of listening to gunfire and screams, you decide to go
in with your wimpy pistol and see what's up.

********************** SPOILER ******************************

The first episode is the first moon base, still in our plane of existence.
The second episode is through a gate to the second moonbase, but in hell.
The thirs episode is the actual surface of hell, and eventually back to earth.
My prediction for the store version is badguys have followed (or beaten) you
back to earth, and you have to clear them out. This is hinted at in the end of
episode 3...
