Version 1.2

If you want the full version of Doom/Doom2, go to your
favorite software store, or goto www.idsoftware.com and
order a copy. You can even download a full, encrypted
copy and unlock it with your credit card (don't bother asking
for the password to decrypt it scince it changes randomly,
everytime the program is run. You have to call a sales rep, and
recite the number on the screen to him/her to get the password to
unlock the game). No one is going to send you the full version of
Doom because it's too big to upload, and it's illegal to do so. Plus,
text encoding makes the file size 3 times or more larger.
A binary needs to be encoded to upload via e-mail or Usenet,
and most e-mail/usenet systems don't like 15 meg files (Doom
is 5 megs compressed, and text encoding will make it about 3
times larger). Your ISP won't like this one bit, and you and
the sender risk getting caught and sued for a huge amount of
money by ID software, especialy if the server(s) gets crapped up
by the binary. No one is going to give you an FTP address where
you can download the full unlocked copy either, because that would
also be illegal. Again, no one is going to help you pirate Doom.

No, no, no, that's not the way to do it! Here's how you request a free copy
of DooM; you say:

SEND ME A COPY OF DOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOW!!!!!

You haven't really looked have you?

Doom and its variants are some of the most pirated
software games out there. A few minutes of searching on
one of the search engines will turn up a copy in a
matter of minutes. I found Ultimate Doom (Doom1 + extra
4th level) in about 2 minutes On my 28.8 connection, it
took 35 minutes to download.

Gotta learn to use the search engines: Altavista, Hotbot,
Google, etc. Another handy resource is the
ftpsearch search engine at http://ftpsearch.lycos.com.

My reluctance for not giving out direct urls for
downloading Doom stem not from some kind of "but that would
be bad" reasoning but because I suspect many of you posting
such requests haven't done the rather minimal legwork.I call
it "but you're lazy" reasoning.

That said, something that annoys me even more is the
self-righteous and error-filled responses you received.

To begin, yes, it's wrong. Even if

A. Most people do it.
B. Id has plenty of money
C. You just want it for demo purposes (heh)
D. You're just getting it because you lost your backup copy (heh heh)
E. You can't afford it.
etc.

If you want a bootleg version, I guess that's between you and your conscience. Some people won't approve. Some will want to know where you got it. Most won't give a damn one
way or the other.

A few just have to get preachy:

I bet this guy wears his seatbelt all the time...

One of those sneaky zeros must have slipped in when no
one was looking. Encoding a binary file to ASCII
usually increases the file size from 30% - 40%. Even
so, doom1, at about 5.5 megs (not encoded) is still too big
for most emails. Too big to upload? Check out some of the warez groups. Often entire cd-roms are posted
to Usenet binaries groups.

People are going down all the time for this one. Id is always filing overseas lawsuits (noticed the ".nl" in your address) against individuals-many of them kids-when they don't pay their nine dollars.
If you're lucky, you might get to be on TV when the copyright police bash in your door followed by the "Cops" cameracrew.("Pirate boys, pirate boys, whatch gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when the nerd police come for you".)

ftp://ftp.cstone.net/users/mikea/ultdoom.inn
(change "ultdoom.inn" to "ultdoom.zip" and unzip.
You now have Ultimate Doom.

Perish the thought.

Hey,

If that's the case, can anyone point me to a site that has a full
version of the game STRIFE? I've looked all over for this bastard, and
all that comes up (even using FTP search) is the demo version. I can't
seem to find it in bargan bins either. Thanks!

The all point restraint straps, including the
crotch strap are all secured and locked in
place with the special key. The crossbar designed to keep the occupant from getting out between the sholder straps is raised high, also locked and secured with the key. The childlock switch on the side of the door is switched to "engage", and the
door closes with a loud THUNK.
