It allows you to gain access to the Secret Cow Level. But you can
drop it and pick up another when you're ready to do cow runs.
For the cow run you need to have beaten the game on the difficulty.
You then place the leg and a tome of town portal in the cube while in
the rogue encampment. When you hit the transform button a portal to
the secret level will appear.
Actually....If you get one with a socket...It can be quite a good weapon!
As you should have read in recent messages, after killing Baal, you
can use Wirt's Leg (and a Tome of Town Portal) to open a portal to the
Cow Level, where there are tough monsters, much experience and much
treasure to be had. Just don't kill the Cow King.

Yep...Its random as to whether its socketed or not....Luck of the draw
really
You don't find a socketed Wort's Leg. You finish a quest where the
reward is to put sockets in one, single item... and if you want, you
can spend it on Wirt's leg.

Yes you can......Even now after the LoD expansion I have just picked up a
socketed Wirts Leg In Tristram to go kill the Cows in NM.....
> Did you get the socketed one in Tristram??
Wirt's Leg can drop socketed. You can't RuneWord it, but if you have a
regular (white) Wirt's Leg, you can imbue it. I don't know why you'd do
this, though, except for comic relief.

Try it yourself; you must kill Diablo (in Classic) or Baal (in
Expansion) in a difficulty level before you can create or enter a portal
in that difficulty level.
I don't see how... What would you put in it, at why would that be any good?

Considering how low a skill level you will be when you pick up your
first.....
Stick in a Gem or a Jewel.....(Or possibly a rune)
Mark Morrison said he picked up a 3 socket version (I've only ever seen a
single socketed one)
But sticking anything in it at that point would be good....

You could make the ultimate, useless quest item: An imbued, socketed, named
Wirt's leg.
Then offer it on e-bay.
Hound
my dad has a noobie closet character on his computer. it has a couple
charms,
armor, chipped gems, some gold, and a three socketed wirts leg. if
anybody at
my house starts a new character, they can start a new game (TCP/IP) and
get
some stuff that's usually good enough to last through act 1

I have received Wirt's Leg with sockets at its initial drop on several
occassions. Usually only 1 or 2 but it definitely had the sockets
before the quest in Act 5.
