Magic Find and Tarnhelm

I have been looking for a Tarnhelm [unique skull cap] (+1 skills, MF, extra
gold) in Diablo 2 Classic (non-lod).
I am using a level 69 cold/lighting sorc with apox 230% MF on USEast. I have
been doing Nightmare Meph runs and found a lot of good stuff, but still haven't
found Tarnhelm.

To get a regular Skull Cap, here are the top 3 places it suggests to try:
Griswold (Normal) 25.93190%
The Smith (Normal) 25.93190%
Bloodraven (Normal) 11.08333%
Over 25% chance of finding a normal skull cap from Girswold in normal difficulty
(that guy in Tristam right?)
I have two questions about this:
1: Would it be correct for me to assume, the fastest way to find a Tarnhelm
would be to do "Griswold Runs" in Normal?
2: If there is a high probability of a monster dropping a "normal" item, does
that mean (if you are VERY lucky!) it can also drop the magic/rare/unique of
that item?

tarn has a specific item level associated with it (not char level
requirement, but item level). i cannot find the info on what the tarn item
level is on either diabloii.net or arreat summit. griswold in normal in the
XP is level 5 (i do not know what he is in D2 classic). if the tarn item
level is higher than griswolds level, he cant drop it, thus you may need to
do nightmare griswold runs. The smith is level 10 in normal in the XP.
Once you head to a nightmare level game, the monsters have a lower chance to
drop a certain item, because so many more items can now drop. You need to
find out the item level of the tarn, if its 6-10, you should do "Smith runs"
in normal (assuming they are the same levels in D2 classic as they are in
XP, which may not hold true because many many monster levels have changed),
if its 5 or less, then "Griswold runs". If its greater than 10, you're
probably going to have to do Nightmare "Griswold runs".

anyway, now that you know that, youre going to have to head to nightmare
since gris and the smith are both below level 20 in normal. the big
question is, can you get a tarn easier from them in nm, or from a monster
around level 20 (since he cant drop any items over that). the drop
probability site is down now so i cant check.

Says that in Normal, Fetishes are level 21... I am going to try this tonight.
They are the right level AND there is a TON of them running around Act 3... I
should be able to rip though a couple thousand of them with a FO (maxed) Sorc in
normal...
Worth a shot atleast.
Bosses give better drop though, so atleast at first I am going to try runs with
these guys:
Duriel (normal) : 22
Meph (normal): 26
Hephasto The Armorer (normal): 25
Izual (normal): 29
I should be able to do a run of each in less than 10 minutes (just all in the
same game)... with my level 79 cold/lighting Sorc... consider everything will be
in a Normal game...

Mephisto (Normal) 0.80510%
Izual (Normal) 0.37508%
Hephasto The Armorer (Normal) N/A
It appears that Normal Meph runs will be the best chance at obtaining a
Tarnhelm... This assumes that both the information at diabloii.net,
battle.net/diablo2exp and afterlifeguild.org have good information for Diablo 2
Classic (most appear to be for Diablo 2 expanion)
I will do some runs tonight and let follow up tommorrow.

I did 25 Normal Meph runs and 25 Hell Meph runs with a level 71 cold/lit sorc
with over 230% in Diablo 2 Classic on USEast.
Sadly, no Tarnhelm.
I did get Sigons complete set.... not once.... but 3 freaking times!
I will check to make sure fetishes can drop skulls caps, if so, that is my next
quest.

I think normal meph runs have better chances to drop a tarnhelm, in hell you
should look for a harlequin crest(that's where i found mine)

I *did* find my tarn (25%) during a meph normal run, was about a month
ago tough..
Reading all this I am just wondering.. Does all this mean that the best
place to go for SoJ would be The Smith and Andy on Nightmare?
