Hullo there,

In Act 2 on Normal difficulty I'm having trouble getting this Greater Mummy
to bite the dust (and he is Greater, he's killed me three times so far)

Ancient Kaa The Soulless (Greater Mummy)
Special Attributes: Magic Resistant, Extra Strong, Lightning
Enchanted, Extra Fast (and what else... I can't recall - I might be
overdoing it a little). Found in: Tal Rasha's Tomb (or one of the False
Tombs)

Dunno if it's the correct or the false tomb - I don't really care - I want
this guy dead <eg>.

I myself am a level 21 Barbarian right now - Got 60 in strength, 68 in
dexterity, 13 in Mana, magic resistances of about 15percent for everything
and about 200 hitpoints (can't remember exactly how much points I have in
Life).

I have double axes (7 to 16 and 8 to 19 damage one with added 1-8 lightning
damage, the other 2-7 fire damage) and the Axe-mastery skill at 6 as well as
the double axe swing at 6. Some of the other things like Leap, Leap Attack,
Smite, Bash and I can't remember which else just the one or two odd points.

What tactics does one use on this purple mummy ? Any help would be
appreciated.

First time I encountered him he had company, there were too many of them, I
was surrounded and boom, like 2 seconds and my life had flashed before my
eyes (now wouldn't that be a nice feature to put in the game ? before you
die you get a quick flash of all the bosses and unique monsters you killed
<g>). Anyhow, I got back into it and devised "tactics".

I try to always kill his goons that aren't as tough as him and are nearby
first, luring them, so I've got just him and me to rumble and no
interference. It works great and I survive this... I get out of Kaa's way,
wait for my health to get up after using a potion and then get to business.

I try him head-on, swinging my axes for all I'm worth, to no avail, in about
10 seconds I was flat on my face...

I tried potioning him (with choking gas and other potions like that), hit
him, then run, use a healing potion, hit/run/potion, ...
This time it took 20 seconds but he got me dead fast...

I've no clue how else to go about it except maybe find as much
lightningresistant items as possible...

Any help would be appreciated...

No then correct this problem immidiately.

Secondly. You can use a combo of taunt and Find potion qhich is quite useful
for those resurrecting buggers. Find Potion on a corpse and it canøt be
resurrected.

IIRC KAA doesn't ress his ovn minions so leave them at first. Taunt an enemy to
a safe place kill, find potion, rinse, repeat. When all of the minions
(Skeletons and Zombies) are dead you go for KAA. Bash, and make sure he can be
knocked back, is the best attack for lightning enchanted buggers. You get a
chance to escape the lightnings.

You'll need some potions but this tactic has always worked for me.

Oh and you'll need a lotta luck Defeating duriel if you can't take out Kaa.

Good luck

For monsters like that I have found my best tactic to be Leap
Attack, bash until you get to about 1/3 health and then leap
away, drink a rejuvenation potion, rinse and repeat.

Taunt his followers one at a time to you and kill them. Then you 'find a
potion' on the dead body so it can't be raised. Do this until it's you a
him.

That should make it a lot easier by a long shot. If you don't have Taunt or
Find a Potion good luck. It's tough killing them when they are all
together.

If you don't have Taunt you should get it. In Act3 it's nice to Taunt those
little pests to you and kill them. Remember a Taunted Monster doesn't shoot
or cast until he's right next to you! That makes life much easier.

Even when you open the seals in Diablo's playpen it's nice. You run into
the clear then Taunt and kill the underlings first then kill the Minor
Bosses.

Taunt doesn't work on Champions, Bosses, or Unquies. But on everything else
it will have them running up to you to die!

Agreed. Leap attack delivers the biggest individual
punch - not exactly the most convenient for standing a
thrashing away at the LEB, but with LEB's you don't want
to just stand there in any event.

Personally I don't hesitate to bypass those guys if
I can. The experience you get for offing them just isn't
enough to justify spending an inordinate amount of time
and expense trying to do it.

Use Taunt to lure the skeletons down the hall and out of Kaa's sight and
kill them there. Use Find Potion on the corpses to ensure they can't be
raised. (Using FP isn't necessary if you lead the skels far enough away but
it doesn't hurt to be certain.)
Next return to the chamber and use Leap Attack to take out the minions.
Ignore Kaa until all the minions are dead.
Now switch to Bash and attack Kaa. Bash's knockback will push him far
enough away that you'll avoid the worst of his charged bolts. Have rejuv
potions handy and/or run away as needed to heal.

Avoid him. Ancient Kaa isn't woth the trouble most of the time.
He is Magic Resistant , Extra Strong , and Lightning Enchanted on
Normal. You can try Bash to beast him after his minions are dead but
this will cost you alot of healing potions.

Double swing at 6 is a waste. Never put more than one point in it unless you
got 20 in your weapon mastery which will be used by all your other attack
skills. Exception for Leap Attack or Whirlwind do not put more than 1 point
in the attack skills, build your mastery instead. Leap, never more than 1
point, leap attack, your choice.

Heh. Unless he doesn't have Find Potion I doubt he'll worry about wasting a
few potions. Also, if he's like most D2 players I know, being bested by a
certain monster isn't something he's prepared to accept.

I do have the find potion ability, so wasting a few on getting Kaa killed is
the least of my worries.
And indeed, I am going to kill that bugger, if it's the last thing I do (big
words, I know).
Thanks to all for replying and advising - I will try and make the best of
what you tell me to do.
But I ain't running away from him :-p

Great to hear someone else who actually wants to finish the GAME, not just
the end quests!

P.S. If you need help, and you're on USEast, whisper Kemiro. I'd be glad to

find some way to leech more hp than he deals at you... if you don't start
looking for rings/amulets/weapon (really rare) that vampire/leech, you'll be
in hurtin shape in a hurry.

Rejuv potions kick ass

If you think that guy's bad... wait till Kurast... or, try the LE,
Teleporting, Stoneskined, Mana burn itches...

My barb's heart traded places with his liver (both times).

diablo no matter what lvl was easier than the Kurast guys or that other
"thing". If all anyone ever got was 1 shot at that guy (and they had to
kill him), that minion's kill tally would be perfect.

I did it, I did it <g>
I cleared the entire Canyon of the Magi, each tomb, all bosses or unique
monsters or whatever....<proud beam>
It even got me up two levels as well. And even Duriel was a piece of cake
considering the Kaa-man (Duriel got to Charge me once upon entering the lair
and then we stood there chest to chest bashing and punching it out...) It
took me 2 healingpotions of 120 life to get the slug killed... In comparison
to Kaa he was easy (where it took me 8 potions and a lot of running
around)...

I'm in Act III now - I'll keep me eyes open - thanks for the warnings :-)

Yanari, lvl 23 Barb... Just did the Jade Statue quest... (nice addition of
