Diablo is not an RPG. I've been reading through the posts and some people
agree with this, so just what IS Diablo (as far as game type). Well, I'd
say Diablo is a "Rogue-like". Most of the people on this newsgroup probably
have no experience in this area (games like: Rogue, Angband, Adom, Nethack).
These games usually have no graphics mind you, just ascii; which explains
why no one here knows what they are; anyway these games have small towns,
shops, tons of monsters, and random dungeons. So, I would conclude that
Diablo is a "Rogue-like" despite the small rpg'ish elements in the game, it
comes nowhere close to counteracting it's Rogue-Likeness.

The roguelike games I listed all have freeware releases and the source code
is usually readily availiable.

Oh, and just so your not left in the dark, to learn more about Angband visit

You are absolutely right! I remember playing a game very similar to
those (Zamok, Russian for "castle"). It was my first gaming experience
ever! (the other game on that computer was ASCII Tetris, which worked
remarkably well).

I bet the guys at Blizzard just said: we'll write a roguelike with
GRAPHICS! And it worked quite well indeed.

Unfortunately, now the original ASCII roguelikes are more of interest to
beginning programmers (dungeon creation, line-of-sight, etc) than to
gamers. Pity! Roguelikes are a good bunch!

Nikita.

Diablo is what's called an "action RPG": It contains elements of a
role-playing game, but with hardly any story or other things that
characterize the genre . In fact, for some reason Diablo is considered the
*first* action RPG. I guess they don't count free/shareware games that don't
have graphics. Of course, somebody did make a graphic version of Rogue, but
(IMO) it kind of sucked when I first tried it and the new version won't work
for me anyway...

I'll agree here. I used to play for hours on end on games like rogue,
nethack, and larn (oh - never did get that amulet of Yendor! - errgh!)
I think Roper had this genre in mind when he first created Diablo.
Hopefully he'll add even more of the rogue-ish features to Diablo II - in
fact he already has I suppose. =-)

Of course we're aware of these wonderful games? :) You're right about how
good the Diablo games matches these games. Especially when Blizzard
introduced the "Hardcore" characters (where a character who dies, really is
lost forever), I immediatily began thinking about "Rogue" games.
I'm still playing Nethack now and then. The last time I played it was
actually yesterday, but I was killed by a nasty Gargoyle. Argh... I had such
a good start with Gauntlets of Power (25 str) and a Dwarven Mithril armour.

Am I the only one that hopes Diablo2 will start you off with a little
dog instead of 100 gold? (of course, I want the ability to name him,
and use a Wand of Polymorph to turn him into an ancient dragon). My
wife got me Diablo for my birthday three weeks ago and it's been the
most fun I've had playing computer games since Hack and Moria on my old
Amiga ten years ago.

Hm.

Where could I get a copy (or d/l, I have no clue what it is.. or how to get it
sooo.. don't blame me.) of Rogue?

It has to be pretty old (in gamer years) so is there a place I can try out this
wonder game?

Naw, the 100 gold is fine... It's the *band standard. ;) The little
dog can go chase a stick off a cliff for all I care. (Not a Nethack

Most of such games are available for free from the Internet.

Go to the site mentioned in the original poster's message, or go to
Yahoo and type in "Rogue" or "Rogue like". You'll get a dozen matches
for sure.

And yes, I occasionally play angband-alike games in Linux, it's nowhere

Its true that Diablo isn't an RPG. Because an RPG is some sort alternative
world where your character lives.
In RPG the character has a great freedom to do things and explorer the given
world. But in Diablo there are
only 4 important things to do, those 4 are the only reason to play diablo

- 1. Getting as much gold as possible
- 2. Murder as much Barrels as possible
- 3. Kill as much monsters as possible
- 4. Mary Gillian

5. Kill Bob.
6. BKK
7. Make BBQ.

Yea, *almost* never read this newsgroup. Diablo is just plain getting OLD

> Ouch! Could this be the start of another one of those "back in my day,
lad, we had
> to ..." threads?
Yup. But you're both lucky, spoiled by these newfangled "threads" and
"newsgroups". Back in *my* day, we didn't have Usenet. We had Rocks. If we
wanted to talk to someone without speaking, we chiseled the message into a
rock and threw it at their head. And if they were outside of the village, we
had to shave birds and write on their butts- and even then, the bird never
made it to the right village, seeing as how most of us were nomadic tribes.
Flame wars were terrible. They aren't named after fire for nothing, you
know. We'd chisel out the message, wrap it in some grass (we didn't have
cloth yet, much less oily rags), light it in the Everlasting Flame and throw
it our victim's head. Believe you me, it was hard to make friends on Rocks.
Flaming concussions were *not* fun. Why do you think nobody ever stayed in
one place back then? Each tribe was always running from the barrages of the
opposing tribe. Healers were highly prized, obviously.
Of course, that was after we had developed the written word. Before
that, we just threw the rocks. Then once the person came over to kill you,
you battled them to the death and *then* told them what you'd wanted to say.
People who had one-sentence messages were *not* liked. But it kept the
population low, at least. And you don't even want to know what we did with
the birds. Then somebody came up with literacy and it was all over.
But even that was version 3.0 of Rocks. Before that, nobody had invented
language. When Rocks 2.0 came out, we just ran around, foraging for food and
throwing stones at each other. Coincidentally, everyone was a dysfunctional
moron but me.
The Beta of Rocks was terrible. It was full of bugs, but that was okay
because they usually had a nutty flavor and a cream-filled center. But they
got rid of the bugs before public testing. The thing was, we were all
lizards, so we didn't throw the rocks, we just slept on them. When the first
version of Rocks *finally* came out, though, we had all evolved into
monkeys. So at first we used Rocks for tools- you know, bashing things. Then
somebody thought (although not with words, since this was still the first
version) "Hey, I wonder what'll happen if I chunk this at somebody's head?"
And thus Rocks' true purpose was discovered- communication by throwing
hard, dangerous objects at people.
See how lucky you kids are? You don't get a serious injury every time
you use Usenet. And you've never had to write on bird butts. You're all so
jaded, think that a 14.4 connection is *slow*! You expect documents to print
in less than an hours, and that programs should have a user interface. Why,
when *I* was young, we didn't *have* any fancy "user interface"- we were
either born with telepathy or we were screwed! I'd tell you about it, but
this post is long enough. "Never send a message that would kill someone," my
mom used to say.

Gillian is related to Bob through Bob's sister's brother-in-law who is the
father of Bob's grandfather's sister's cousin's niece's goat. So, by law,
if you have one night with Gillian, you *are* married to her (shotgun
style or regular, your choice).

Actually the game is abandonware, and 100% legal as it included
nothing that can be protected this long. Besides I seriously doubt the
original author would mind people freely downloading it considering
the game hasn't made a dime in over a decade and it hasn't been
available for sale even longer. If you really want it I'll send it to
you. Also I'd suggest you try dungeon hack (My personal favorite of
the rogue children - Diablo parents) which is currently for sale in a
completion pack.

Indeed, a good list. But tell me - would you define Baldur's Gate an RPG? What
about the Might and Magic series? There are only *3* things to do in these
games:

1. Wander around aimlessly (here's the freedom you were talking about. For some
reason I equate all that wandering around as extreme boredom, but maybe I just
have a short attention span).
2. Click your way past all the pop up story dialogs as it's not all that
important anyway - the idea is to ...
3. Murder as many creatures as possible until you get to the endgame, where you
get to murder the ulimate personification of evil (hmmm, looks like Mad'Doug and
Celleste may start getting leading roles in these things soon).

Come to think of it, I can't really name one computer game that doesn't involve
the above to a large degree (no, I've never played the "Fallout" games).

Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine - people are always saying "Diablo isn't an RPG,
X or Y is an RPG ... blah blah". I say Diablo *is* an RPG because:

1. You play a role
2. The graphics, sound and gameplay immerse you into the game world
3. You can play online with other people and *interact* with them

Ouch! Could this be the start of another one of those "back in my day, lad, we had

References to both rogue and angband (though until this series of posts, I had
no idea what either of them was). Most of those posts were quite awhile ago
(or seems like it if they weren't).

Its an acronym-

WO- Woe is me, a statement of forlornity.
MB- Megabytes- Memory
AT- location (where's it at?"

It used to be WIMILMMDYKWIA
for:
"Woe is me, I've lost my mind, do you know where it's at?"
which was catchy as Wimil Mmday, Kwia, but soon supplanted by the chic "WOMBAT"

It's a very old computer game. I believe a have the basic code
used to create the game somewhere, however you'd need some knowledge
of what your doing since the book is from like the mid-eighties, back
when everything was a line number in basic and you couldn't just go
back and fix your mistakes.

Surprised some of the 'down unders' didn't pop in with this actual
definition:

wom·bat n. Any of several stocky, burrowing, Australian marsupials
of the family Vombatidae, somewhat resembling a small bear and feeding
mainly on grass, leaves, and roots

sounds cute

I wouldn't mind having the ability to buy a few dogs for Diablo 2 characters.
Might be kind of fun to set your trusty pack loose on the fallen ones. Maybe
you could even play as the dog, and level up (very minor improvements). It
would be interesting to see how many demons you could kill as the Alpha Wolf
with nothing more than speed, sharp teeth and your pack at your back.
