A guy ( I think German, Not Korean ) was collecting Infernal Tools.. So
I mentioned I had the wand ( forget the name....) and he said he wanted
it, so I showed him... and he still wanted it.
So I then asked what he had for exchange..... next thing bang 100,000
Gold...

Needless to say I accepted..... :)

Hey not that bad, he actually offered me a rare sword as well ! Which I
declined

I paid 138k for an amulet +1 to all necro skills. I would have paid all 240k
that I had. 3 hours later I found an amulet in NM/4 with +1 to all and +12
to mana. I don't really feel bad because with all the gothic plates I sell,
I average 50k per hour collecting.

At higher levels, gold is only good for gambling. You'll find or trade for
anything else you need. It takes me less than 10 mins in Act 4/Hell to
accumulate 100K in gold. It would take me longer to find a specific set
item.

The guy you traded with probably passed down a pile of gold to his Necro.

Well, as long as you were both happy, that's all that counts. But
that's a relatively insignificant amount of gold, to anyone past
Act3 normal. My lvl33 necro blew 550k last night unsuccessfully
gambling for a Culwen's Point, without a second thought- it's just
money ;-) If I really wanted a particular item like that, I'd consider
a 100k pricetag dirt cheap. But, if you have something you don't
need at all, and can only sell for a few thousand gold ingame, and
somebody offers you that much for the item... heh, good deal :-)

And, of course, consider that you can not gamble for wands (or staves, or
scepters)...this was probably a very good deal for him considering how long
he might need to wait for a random drop...

The unofficial currency of D2, at least on the realms, is Stone of Jordon
rings (stones, SOJs). Most items seem to be valued on how many SOJs they'll
bring. Some common ones I've seen are:

Frostburn - 1 SOJ (has dropped a bit, some are now asking for Frosts +
something else)
Goldskins - 1 SOJ (not many takers, so may be less)
Iceblink - 4 SOJs (flavor of the month tradingwise, will go down shortly)
Silks of the Victor - 2 SOJ (has also dropped a bit. I got 'em for 1 SOJ and
Frosts)
dual leaching ring - 2 SOJs and up depending on %s and other attribs
premium weapon - market (I saw someone offering 16 SOJs for a 200 dmg Bec
last night)

An Eye of Etlich (sp?) ammulet will trade for more or less than 1 stone
based on it's % of life leach.
I'm not sure if any other set or unique item in the game will bring as much
as 1 SOJ. Tarnhelm, Goldwrap, Magefists, Heavnly Garb, JangBong, Umes,
Culwin's Point, Treads, Goblintoe, Wormskull, all trade for less than 1
stone. I saw people asking a stone for an imbuable lance right after they
came out, but that died pretty quick. They aren't THAT hard to find.

Given that the average cost of gambling a SOJ, assuming you already have the
Manald and Nagel, is 1.1 million gp, it gives you an idea of what gold is
really worth at higher levels.

Why the low "price" of Ume's? It is also one of the items that cannot be
gambled for and it is an awesome item (better than SOJ in my opinion): +2 necro
skills, +mana, Fast cast!!

Just as a note: I traded my one of my Ume's (had 3 at the time) for Iceblink. I
have been told I got the better end of the deal :>)

..and my best trade ever: 2 SOJ's and skin for ... <drumroll> a rare
lance with: 250 dmg, +2 barb skills, +50 attack. (that's all the 'fixes)

4 SOJs for Iceblink?!? I have never EVER seen ANYONE offer (or ask for
that matter) for more than 2 SOJs for Iceblink (its usually 1 SOJ and
another good unique). Please find me one of these idiots giving 4 SOJs
for Iceblink. I'd gladly give up one of my sets.

actually i was really surprised about the value of iceblink, i got a bunch of
uniques for it, including tarn, frost, threads, goblintoe, tear, bladebuckle,
rattlecage, culwens and steelclash, manald and set item sigons guard i was like
sure, considering all these would help my low level character more than iceblink
will at that point, besides i can always gamble for it later in the game. when i
find one i will gladly trade it again.(funny my friend think i got ripped off, i
certainly don't feel that way)
