Just note that the guide was written before the corpse explosion nerfing
in patch 1.03, but it's already announced there.
Markus.
General necro play method:
* Summon a few pets
* Let them stand in front of you and cast iron maiden on them
The monsters will kill themselves while trying to kill your pets.
1. The necromancer is a summoner. Still, more isn't always better with the
necro. Quality is important, too.
Skels - Only put one point in these. Very soon they will become too weak to
be of any use.
Skel Mages - Some people prefer to only use Golems. I prefer to have
several mages, too. They don't do much damage, but they block enemies and
survive long enough if you put enough into Skeleton Mastery. I have 3-4
Mages later on, plus a few from items, but don't go for many of them too
early.
Skel Mastery - Have about as many points in that skill as you have skel
mages/skels. Keeps them alive longer.
Golem - Depending on which golem you plan to use in the long run, only put
one point into them. Even with higher levels they won't do much damage,
they are there for the monsters to bash, so they will kill themselves
because of iron maiden. I use the fire golem, so I only put one point into
the others.
Golem mastery - important skill. Keeps your golem alive longer.
2. Curses
Iron Maiden & Amplify damage. You will use Iron Maiden most of the time.
3. Combat spells
Corpse explosion: A must. Get a few levels soon. Very useful. Typical necro
assault: Find enemies. Let pets take them on, cast iron maiden, wait until
one drops. Then BOOM BOOM BOOM, even though it isn't as powerful as it was.
Attack spell: There are only two truly worth it: Bone spear & Bone spirit.
The first goes through several enemies and is cheaper, the second is a
homing missile and you can shoot around corners. Choose one and concentrate
on that one.
4. Bone Armor, Bone prison.
One point is quite useful. More is only useful if it fits your playing
style.
---------------
So overall, what will you go for? You will go for a mix, maybe
concentrating on one of the skills.
Most important:
*Golem mastery
*Iron Maiden
*Corpse explosion
*Your attack spell (may start later on)
If you choose to have a few skel mages:
*Skel mastery
*Skel mages
Also useful, but less important:
*Amplify damage
*Bone armor
*Bone prison
> i am thinking of starting a necromancer but unsure of what skills

Iron Maiden and a strong golem ist a must is you want to have a easy time
as a necro.
Put every point you get into golem mastery and iron maiden after level 12.
All others
skills required to get bone spirit, revive and fire golem get only one
point. You may want
to get life trap to keep hard hitting low HP revives alive. You should
have level 13 IM
and level 10 golem mastery at level 30. Use Wands if you want to be
better in one of
the 1 point skills until you reach level 30. A character using these
skills can run though
all difficulty levels and beat diablo on hell difficulty around level 45.
Christian Seitz
My strategies vary depending on the situation and number of people I am
playing with as well as the player classes of my party members. The skills I
find most useful regardless of situation are revive, iron maiden, bone spear
and bone spirit. I have several skill points in skeleton mastery, golem
mastery and summon resist. I have no points in the poison chain or in the
chain with dim vision, attract, and confuse. I am considering putting a
point (6 with modifiers) into dim vision to help combat those spell casters,
archers and fetish blow dart wielding bastiges.
When travelling with a melee character like a barb or pally, decrepify seems
to keep them happy as well as let my fire golem do some extra damage. When
out cruising with a sorc, lower resist does the trick. Again lets my fire
golem do some extra damage. The rest of my skills are pretty much balanced
out except for bone spirit, which is currently at 21 with modifiers.
I know it's not much, just a general outline of what has kept me alive and
pretty much out of harm's way.

I just love standing back watching them do the work. It's also much
fun in MP with 2 or more necro's. You can just chat during fights :-)

Agreed.

I've put only one point into this, but because of some item the skill
is up to level 5 which allows me to make 5 of them. I think the are
very useful.

This also helps keep your revives alive longer and do more damage.

Revives - Revive a monster to fight for you, I think this will be a
must on nightmare(don't know yet, just beat Normal today)

Agreed.
<SNIP other tuff I agree with>

I would add revive to this list.

Sir Aragorn, level 27 Paladin (ACT I)

Yes, I forgot revive. Once you hit L30, they are very useful, especially if
you realize they are not like your other pets (=not following as "well") -
just get a few whenever there is a big fight.

It's just as good as it was before, if you are alone. If you are in a 2
player game, it just requires you to use Amp damage before CE. It's
still an outstanding damage spell, as it does do a lot more damage to an
area than most other class' skills can do.

Sorry, I was just fed up with all this CE nerfing crap I've been reading
about. BTW, don't get me started on Whirlwind.....all I'll say is - cool
spell, still kicks ass, only now you have to actually work a little bit
before it does the damage you want.

I agree. I put one point into it (plus a couple with modifiers) and it
was quite effective in Act 2. I think I have an advantage in that I
never used CE before it got nerfed, so the nerfed version doesn't seem
like a let down. I do, however, understand a person being a little
pissed when they've spent countless hours on character developement and
then a patch throws their work out the window, but it's only a game.
Besides, it's a good excuse to start a new character and play more.
It would have been nice if they'd caught these problems in the beta
stages, though. Especially stuff like bone farming. What's up with the
beta testers that these exploits get by them?

I understand that this is your style to play, and I mean no disrespect, but
this sounds like an incredibly boring way to play the game.

Iron Mainden Level 18
Golem Mastery Level 14
Bone Spirit Level 14
Revive Level 10
These skilles include a +4 bonus from items. These were my main combat skills
at level 48 when I killed diablo on hell difficulty.
Christian Seitz
Yeah yeah yeah, but how does all this translate into D2 terms for me?
Simple. Think like a Necro. You don't like physical combat, you like letting
your minions do all the work while you just waltz around checking chests. So
build yourself an army. A strong army. Get yourself about 5 skill levels
worth in raise skeleton, about double that in raise skeletal mage, as much
as you can spare in skeletal mastery, cuz the more you have the more hps
they'll have and the more dammage they'll do. Now work up to the best curse
in the game, Decrepify. Yes it rules. Absof*ckinlutely. I know what the book
description says, and what it says in the game when you highlight it, but do
YOU know what it says after you've dumped about 10 skill levels into it? It
becomes a triple curse my friends. That's right. It works as Amplify Damage,
Weaken, and severly slows the monsters as if hit by cold dammage. Even the
fastest hitting mobs will fall before the fury of a skeletal swarm as your
amplified skeletal warriors wack on his slow-motion swinging ass, and your
skeletal mages blast away with cold attacks and poison. That's right. If you
raise a mage and it's not a poisoner or cold/freezer, waste em and get a new
one. Watch in awe as your miniscule-mana-raised skeletons blaze over
everything your decrepify oozes over.
Oh, did you find a unique monster? Just make sure you have a few skill
levels in summon resistance and watch your skeletal mages just mow em down
like grass after you remove those listed resistances with one curse.
Booyah!
And for good measure, you can always put a few skills in Poison Nova, and
watch as your poison eats away at the same time your curses do. I should
mention, if you curse them with summon resistance and THEN Poison Nova, it's
like giving yourself a double dammage bonus on that attack. *grin* Then just
follow it up with Decrep, muahahahahaha.
When my friends went to the cow level in nightmare level and got spanked
repeatedly, guess who came in and bitchslapped the whole board? You know it
baby.
Now notice, this strategy is for under 30th for the most part. After you get
30th, get that summon resistance curse and then at 31st, start dumping all
your future skill levels into revive. The more you put into this, the
stronger your revived characters are. Don't ever bother putting anything
beyond one skill level into summon resistance, cuz it maxs real quick. Just
learn it once and let your +1 to all necromancer skill levels (and similar
like sigon's shield) boost it up more. Just keep dumping skills into revive.
It's the spell to have on the higher levels.
All you necro's who've beat Diablo on normal know about his ring of fire and
what it does to skeletons. Well, there's no real stopping that, but you can
prevent it with revived minions, cuz eventually you get it so high they
don't drop, and watch as 10 gargoyles revived just before getting that last
seal beat down the horned punkazz at the finale.
Corprse Explosion, keep a few profs in that as well, it's good indoors in
close areas with lots of doors. Particularly useful in act 2.
Just remember, the idea of this style is this. Your minions might only do
piddly dammage, but the more you have doing piddly dammage, the more dammage
it becomes. Not to mention you can always up that piddly dammage. *grin*

BigBrother, I guess you feel all the people at blizzard who made Diablo 2
have no life with your comment about me having no life because I've been
playing games for so long eh? Did you know Blizzard stocks their game makers
with game players? Do you know that this is actually a very popular
practice and is also done at Bioware, Sierra, Digital-Tome, Activision, etc
(basically by all game companies around the world)? No need to slam someone
who's just trying to give some advice about helping others in a common game
we are playing. Sheesh man, I'm just trying to help others out.
Btw, I just wanted to post an addendium to my first post, when I was saying
summone resistance curse, I infact was saying the wrong thing, I meant the
curse 'Lower Resistance' as summon resistance is for your minions natural
resistances which maxes quite quickly at about 60% max, unlike the barbarian
who can jump his up to about 100% I believe. So whenever I said Summone
resistance curse, I meant Lower Resistance Curse. Sorry about the confusion.
